Yulia Lipnitskaya

Mah... I think she should stay away from the media for long, except the ice shows, and until the next season. That may help her feel more relax.

Eteri Tutberidze skating in a show, in 1993, as an Ice dancer. :)

This post was timed well. In the interview that geiger translated, Eteri says "In choreography, I set the steps...." We see this influence from the video, Yulia and Eteri use the same foot-legwork. Since Yulia does the upper body, just what was Ilya's role? Alba, some time ago you told me Eteri could do the day-to-day choreography coaching. That seems to be the case now. So shouldn't the choreography be credited to Eteri and Yulia? Would it be more correct to call Ilya an artistic consultant? Is his responsibility to put the music together and to give Yulia insight into the music (Yulia once credited him for this in an interview)? Does he also do the layout? Thanks for the video, it provided an interesting and important connection.

You guys are in a desperate need of a good translation :rolleye:
Ok, here goes:
Wow! Thanks geiger, that was very interesting.

I know how tedious and time comsuming it can be to make translations, especially a long one like that - so I appreciate it very much.

It's amazing that Julia herself creates her upper body choreo, but there is more than that on the topic imo.

For me, this is beautifully choreographed hand movement: http://tinyurl.com/qdepxlj
You can teach this - depending on your talent and practice, it will look worse or better (of course it looks amazing here ;)).

But what she's done with her left hand here: http://tinyurl.com/kclw53p is pure, instinctive and intrinsic grace.
I doubt even Julia could teach that to somebody.

Much of what she does can be taught, but the remarkable thing is that she has taught herself. You can see this if you go back to the early videos, the same movement and coordination with the music. She is more expressive now, and ever-greater expressiveness is the benefit we will see as she matures. We really are seeing Yulia, the pure, instinctive, intrinsic grace makes that possible.. That is why she is great to me.

I know that Ilya worked for 3 or 4 days. I don't know how they work, but it depends. Sometimes the skater choose the music, so there is an idea what he/she wants to express. Therefore, the choreographer put those ideas (improve them) in place. Sometimes is the choreographer who would suggest a music/idea for you. The coach, then, works with you on daily basis so you add or take out something. The layout is decided more or less in the beginning, if I'm not mistaken, but of course things can change. The choreographer should have a hand there because the technical elements as well should go with the music and the story you are telling. As I said though, I have no idea how do they work with Ilya. Does he do the choreo at the beginning and then Eteri and Yulia work on it, or he comes back time after time to check and assist them.

IIRC then the layout is decided by the skater/coach. Of course the coach suggest strategy but overall it's the skater who decide in the end what they can do. From what I've seen the coach often help with steps, they even design beforehand where to jump on the ice rink.

Yes of course, the skater and the coach decide in the end. But jumps also have to fit into the music also. So I would imagine that the choreographer, at least some, have a say in this as well. I don't know in Yulia's case though.

Thank you Alba and Meoima. You leave me with the impression that if Yulia has the music, then she and Eteri have little use for a choreographer. A possible exception would be if that choreographer is able to collaborate closely with Yulia. Otherwise, the finished product might be better if they were left to their own resources, especially as Yulia gains more experience.

I recall Ilya saying he felt that he didn't make a full contribution with Yulia, that his best work was done elsewhere. The interview was moths ago, this may be off some, but that was definitely the gist.

No,no. That's not what I meant. You may choose a music because you have and idea what you want to portray but it doesn't mean you know how to put in place a choreography.
You may also choose a music just because you like it, but you have no idea what you want to potray. In both cases you do need a choreographer.

Which is why they looked so hard for a choreographer for SL. What I am missing is the disconnect between all the detail movement (hand, foot, etc.) that Yulia and Eteri do so musically, and the greater scheme of integrating elements and transitions with music. Ilya often uses formulas, such as placing disruptive elements at the ends of phrases and sections of music. He makes it look straightforward and rather easy. So I don't appreciate how difficult and specialized it is integrate music and movement for a full piece of music. And why two people with Yulia's and Eteri's gifts for music/movement on the small scale, can't also do the large-scale choreography.

It's not so easy to be able to create a good choreography, even if you have a gift for music. In their case I have no idea how they work. I presume Ilya does the choreo and they work on it, to polish it, add transitions or movements. Things like this.

thanks, Alba. You are a good teacher.
