Yulia Lipnitskaya

Last time the dress made me cringe, this time it's the jumps. What was up with them?
I liked the music and the dress, her moves were smooth too.

I'm always behind in this thread but regarding the skating lesson, I don't think anyone takes their commentary seriously, or that anyone should. As someone else said, they are like forum posters, but worse because they are even flat out mean to their favorites (and their favorites also change on the drop of a hat) whereas at least most forum posters are relatively consistent and actually like some people.

I do think their interviews tend to be good, and I don't dislike them so much that I boycott the interviews, but beyond that I don't think they have anything to offer that you can't get better here, and at least actually respond to and have a rational discussion about if the poster here is not nuts.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I never liked them tbh - they are completely clueless when it comes to Ice Dance for example - and I listen to them very rarely. I listen mainly the interviews.

@Sam: I don't have time right now but I'm very curious about your comments about the music. So I will read it and watch your clips with more calm. What I can say though is that the cuts in the second part of her SP is not good. In particular the ending is completely wrong, IMO.

I think that's what SJID discussed earlier. In essence the up and downbeat would end up switching places and the crowd clapping along could remain on beat although they may not be aware of the inversion, I could edit it (tomorrow :) ) that way too if if you like. Could be a fun comparison.

I was afraid you'd think my "it only took 5 minutes" rolleye was directed at you which it wasn't. It was aimed at the editor of the music. Thanks for the discussion :)
I did think that, LOL, thank you for mentioning that! But as it was past 3am I went to bed just hoping I did not say anything particularly idiotic- had no energy to analyze:)))
And they SHOULD hire you to do the cuts! I can hear well, but technology is not my thing, alas.
If they absolutely have to keep that "cropped" version, and you are bored, I'd be curious to hear what can be done. With introduction of vocal music, the problem of bad cuts got more obvious (not just talking about Julia). There is always somebody who speaks the language.

I don't really agree with this, they might have a slight Nationalistic bias, but they are quite mean about a lot of Americans too, and are nice about some international skaters.
They discussed Mariah Bell's dress longer than whole Russian test skates. They live in "slightly" paralell world. :rolleye:

Ok....I've gone mental now. Here are two corrected versions edited differently than the mix she is using .

Here is the way we discussed in which the up beat and down beat change. It is cut on the 1/2 beat that was discussed earlier.

Edited the music at 0:35-0:36 here. Pretty much exactly what she has now except it preserves the beat.

Here is the way I said I would want it. I went all the way to the end with this one but don't have the ending that they used during the final spin. Deal with it :p

Edited from 0:35-0:37 and in the final spin I edited it (can anyone spot it)
https://youtu.be/0XB_6Gu-nR0

I do realize that the music cuts I added come in very abruptly but I matched it to the skating and kind of forgot to mix the begining better volume and time wise :slink: I really don't feel like sitting thru another hour of uploading and rendering though to fix it.

Here is my "fixed version" with the correct beat maintained.

https://youtu.be/t-s8_lg5Dog

Let's just assume that my additional 2 seconds violates time restrictions. I'd suggest then that she goes strait out of her StepSeq into her layback a little faster. She does an amazing transition at 2:43 that I'm assuming she could link into her spin almost directly.

Here: https://youtu.be/HPbXXp01Xis?t=2m40s

That would make up for the time difference and actually match the changing music structure better. Anyway...what do I know?

Thoughts?

It's definitely much better and the proper way to do it. Any of your versions works fine for me. Thanks for sharing. I really really wonder if among their team they don't have a single one person who is specifically assigned to do it. The one who they'd make sure to have it cut/arranged right instead of sloppy. Or at least have them listen to it and then make sure it's cut properly and doesn't sound so jarring.
Also, I'm not sure of the actual music time of her cut, but there's + & - 10 seconds allowed for the skaters so assuming the original cut falls among it, I think an additional 2 secs wouldn't be a problem.

Towards the end....Rika's adorable smile :o:, Sergei's mitten bunny ear photobombing  and Yulia's animated eyebrows+face :laugh2:

Wouldn't it be hysterical if one of them accidentally raised their hand a little too high during the lap of honour...would've ended up being a lap of high-fiving kids in the face.

I think it looked like Julia really wanted desperatley to talk to Rika on the couch but couldn't because of a language barrier. Sergei was being ornery and I think she was in search of someone a bit more chill. Who's more chill and cool than Rika.

Good job. Your changes preserve the "square" quality of the rhythms, abruptness isn't important. The conventional march-like beat is a clear contrast to the elasticity of Leningrad (most dramatic in the first 25 seconds of the music), a contrast which needs to be preserved. They could have done this, but because they have postponed makes me suspect they may want to consider altering more than just this one weakness, or at least consider various alternatives to correct it. Elvis is Marina's idea. Marina, Yulia (the micro-manager) and the techs (from a pro lab?) will likely sit down together to brainstorm this when she gets back to Michigan. We should hear a somewhat different version at the next competition.

Fabulous.
If the cuts are not improved by Skate America, perhaps an intervention is in order:)
I am strangely obsessed with that SP, because I like the choreo, and the concept, and think it'll really expand Julia's expressive possibilities if she makes it her own.

Omg at 12:34 Yulia's face talking maybe to Rika or Joshi was so cute  I'm not sure what she was trying to say but it was so cute

I liked it when Rika helped Yulia onto the top podium...I would say I wish this would also occur figuratively in competition...but I like Rika too so...:p

That's the most kissing I've ever seen on medal ceremony.

I've finally had a chance to see Yulia's Finland LP and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a beautiful, gracefully executed program which will likely get even more impressive over the season. The dress looks right for the period stylistically, as well as for the somber subject matter, and yet it's attractive - and unique. (My mother said upon seeing Yulia's SP costume, "What a beautiful dress!" and upon seeing the LP one: "Why, that's a real dress!" (as opposed to something that's obviously a skating costume).)

I can't wait to see both of Yulia's programs at SA after she polishes them some more with Zueva, and generally to see how they develop over the season, as she gets more comfortable with them and sort of grows into them. Incidentally, I've read her say in interview that she's not comfortable with the second part of her SP, but it's not at all visible to me, as I watch it. Both times - at the test skates and in Finland - it looked to me like she was particularly enjoying that part :). She's a good actress! But what particularly blows me away is the gracefulness of her movements and the way she presents contemplative music pieces. There are a fair number of skaters who can do fun programs well, but when Yulia skates to reflective music, it looks timeless. That's what got me hooked on her skating in the first place. (Not that I'm not happy to see her do something different for a change occasionally and have fun out there.)
