Yulia Lipnitskaya

I've finally had a chance to see Yulia's Finland LP and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a beautiful, gracefully executed program which will likely get even more impressive over the season. The dress looks right for the period stylistically, as well as for the somber subject matter, and yet it's attractive - and unique. (My mother said upon seeing Yulia's SP costume, "What a beautiful dress!" and upon seeing the LP one: "Why, that's a real dress!" (as opposed to something that's obviously a skating costume).)

I can't wait to see both of Yulia's programs at SA after she polishes them some more with Zueva, and generally to see how they develop over the season, as she gets more comfortable with them and sort of grows into them. Incidentally, I've read her say in interview that she's not comfortable with the second part of her SP, but it's not at all visible to me, as I watch it. Both times - at the test skates and in Finland - it looked to me like she was particularly enjoying that part :). She's a good actress! But what particularly blows me away is the gracefulness of her movements and the way she presents contemplative music pieces. There are a fair number of skaters who can do fun programs well, but when Yulia skates to reflective music, it looks timeless. That's what got me hooked on her skating in the first place. (Not that I'm not happy to see her do something different for a change occasionally and have fun out there.)

I agree 100 percent with everything you said. The programs are beautiful, I just got bogged down with everyone's negative comments at first. Especially the SP. It's just as good as at the test skates but since the camera is so far out in perspective it didn't seem as good. Fortunately that won't be a problem at SA.

There is something I've been noticing about Yulia for some time, watch her hands at 0:37, 0:59. She has this cute habit of doing such tiny graceful gestures, sometimes without an apparent need, perhaps something simply reflecting her state of mind at the moment.

I disagree, at the Test Skates the movements, especially during the "Devil in Disguise" part, which is the part where the main choreo und emoting goes or should go down, were much more precise and done to the music. At Finlandia, I can see why people would say that she's only half heartedly in it or not really connecting to the music (in SL or during her LP this season f.e. it isn't as cringe when she finishes behind music cause it fades out quietly and her poses were subtile, but since this SP ends very appruptly and her ending pose is also much more "apprupt" it looks very unfortunate when she finishes behind the music like at Finlandia)

But that's just this one competition. If she skates the SP like she did at the test skates it will look amazing imo. I hope that she'll be able to portray the playful, fun character she chose for herself here because I'd just love to see her being versatile and extrovert

 I agree totally, I LOVED the second part of the SP at the test skates and want to see her do it like that again! It was so fun and it looked like she was having so much fun

Nice work! :cheer2: I will be in Milwaukee.

In case anyone may be curious, «Побеждай сердцем» is just a variation of the English phrase used there, or literally "win heart".

Please, forgive me, but I would translate it as "Win with the heart"

See you in Milwaukee!

Thanks. Are you coming to Milwaukee primarily for Yulia?

I like many skaters and several of them are going to be in Milwaukee, but Yulia, by far, the # 1.
And, to be honest, not sure if I would take the time off from my busy work schedule to make this trip, if Yulia would not be there.

> Are you coming to Milwaukee primarily for Yulia?
Yes, I am. Because I'm and our Art Team want to support her everythere :) And I will be glad to find new friends!
And, in second, it will be good a good opportunity for me to see USA (It will be my first time, and I have a lot of plan on my visit :) ).
How and when we may find each others?
My seats are:
SP - Section 121, Row 2, Seat 12
FP - Section 216, Row 2, Seat 5
EP: Section 216, Row 2, Seat 7 :)

See you in Milwaukee! ^_^

What I meant was that it was still very good overall and some of that is hard to see because of the camera. I was going to edit but my phone died.

There is something I've been noticing about Yulia for some time, watch her hands at 0:37, 0:59. She has this cute habit of doing such tiny graceful gestures, sometimes without an apparent need, perhaps something simply reflecting her state of mind at the moment.

In previous programs gestures were sometimes without apparent need and that was a definite weakness, but in Leningrad everything is connected. Without the fat in her choreography, her presentation is easier to appreciate and makes greater impact. Here is a very important example.

Listen to the first 25 seconds of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqGWArNp6lw We hear two notes, then a pause. Then the same two notes, another pause. Then a longer phrase of notes, followed by another pause. Then a final phrase of notes with pause. Instead of a melody, we hear a pattern of note fragments alternating with pauses. This music is played freely with an irregular beat.

Now listen to the first 15 or 20 seconds of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONb28aPRmBI We hear the same hesitating sound-pause pattern. To me, William Joseph suggests crying. Not everyone will hear this as crying, but most will agree that pain and sadness is written into this music.

Now watch what Yulia does with this passage in the first 20 seconds of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETOXX9dVKWk Every hand gesture is tenderness, she strokes and embraces the crying/suffering one. Every movement expresses love, sympathy and gentleness. Her response to the musical message is aimed at our hearts.

Yulia the Poet does more than express sympathy with a soul in pain. With a couple of minor exceptions, every gesture in the program can be traced to the choreography introduced in the opening 20 seconds. This structure is a giant step forward artistically. In the past her message was blurred by sequences of rapid, seemingly unrelated movement. In Leningrad all choreography, including hand gestures, can be traced to the fundamental movements of the first 20 seconds with its music of pain and tenderness. I find Leningrad has a focused, organic quality that can't be found in previous programs. I see Leningrad is an artistic breakthrough for Yulia, and a model for any skater who chooses to skate subjectively. It is a triumph of beauty, meaning and above all, feeling.

Leningrad is about expressing feeling through music, Elvis is about expressing music in and of itself, so they have different choreographic styles. It is to Yulia's credit that she excels in both.

For anyone interested in pursuing these ideas, the opening set of gestures of Leningrad is better defined in the open skate than in the Finland competition.
