Yulia Lipnitskaya

Of course it wasn't one sided. I believe Yulia had taken part in this too but I was pointing out what Eteri did.

Please read the following pairs of quotes taken from interviews at about the same time. These quotes contrast Yulia's experiences under choreographers Marina and Ilya, and under coaches Eteri and Urmanov. It seems that during the last two years Yulia was struggling just to defend herself and assert her values. Neither Ilya nor Eteri could help her, she struggled without support in what became an indifferent environment. The final two contrasting quotes are from Yulia herself. Sam deserves credit for seeing the need to change coaches early on.

Ilya: It's much harder when the skaters says `I need my arms to go this way, my head that way and am going to skate this direction'. There is no room left for creativity, as you can imagine. A lot depends on the coach as well. For example working with Lipnitskaya it wasn't her I was choreographing for, but Tutberidze, so she would understand what I mean to do, so she would like it. Just that the skater is not always willing to take orders, just like Julia. But what can you do?

Marina: Yulia herself is involved in the creative process. She is a very talented and thoughtful person. In just one week we put together three programs in different styles, and it is primarily the merit of Julia that we were able to do such work. http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/808787

...........

Eteri: I think I can forgive and understand lots of reasons, but if an athlete does not want to train, does not want to compete .... And when I hear doubts about new programs from her side, like you know, "No, it's not interesting."
It kind of hurts me, because I feel what would be good for an athlete. (then Eteri says she wasn't mistaken on Schindler's List.....but it was Yulia who insisted on SL over Eteri's reservations!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3b83LROvCc

Urmanov: I should say that she is a really hard worker - she's been practicing from day one, right after she came. She's been working very hard all this time. I know what to do next. Yulia is ready for this work. http://tass.ru/sport/2559713

............

Yulia (when with Eteri): Yulia told interviewers that she often had thoughts of quitting but could not quit because she knew only skating. This disposition was reported in several interviews, the earliest I remember being from her period of greatest success a few months before the Olympics.

Yulia (when with Urmanov): I cannot yet say what is better now or what is worse. But I feel better about it in my soul, that's for sure. I am really comfortable, I really want to do things. For the first time since the longest period, I actually fell in love with skating. Not only with watching it, but with doing it, with the work. I really can sit there, tired, in the weekend. Then mom calls: "well, what are you going to do?" And I like: "mom, I want to go practice". When did that happen last time? http://www.fsrussia.ru/news/1696-yu...oj-i-ispytyvayu-silnuyu-ustalost-sejchas.html

Thank you sjid. I've read all of these interviews separately but together like this it is really eye opening. I'm glad Yulia is happy now.

Oh, I forgot to add "among coaches". But "people we don't care about anymore" would suffice too.
Haha, I wouldn't be so sure that we won't find Ilia among Yulia's choreographers again in the future. Only a little flattering on both sides is needed ...
It's good to hear that Urmanov already seems to have a very good connection to Yulia. I got the impression that she is a very hard worker and that she doesn't need this insane competiton in training that she had in Moscow to push herself.

Wouldn't rule him out, but you never know. If I had a bad experience with someone and could work with someone else, I don't think there would be that much thought put into the matter.

Could some one please translate at least sense of this interview?

Q: You’ve been working together (with Yulia) not for so long. Have you already had some intermediate results?
A: We can speak about Russian Nationals, because it was our only competition. We didn’t have a lot of time, so we had prepared in a rather subdued way. On the other hand, we managed to achieve some goals. During her SP Yulia showed everybody, that she is still here she can compete and develop.
We hadn’t changed the programmes a lot before the Nationals and we are not going to change them before the RusCap Final. We’ll keep working on what we have now.
While I’m here, in Bratislava, Yulia is working in Sochi, she has a schedule and while guys were skating their LP here, she was skating hers at home. On Friday I’ll come back.
Q: What were your conclusions after the Nationals?
A: we were thrilled after the SP in Ekaterinburg. Not only we were, but also many FS lovers were actually. That was really great and I rewatched that skate for many times. And I was pleased with what she had done, what we had done together. However we realized that with LP the same was not going to happen. We need to work a lot with her fit and technique. So that’s what we are doing now.
Q: Are you going to take part in RusCup Final and what aims do you have there?
A: We are going to Saransk. Aims? Everything is important. It’s not the competition where you go to get 322 points. First of all we need skating, confident skating. It’s important to skate LP better, than at RusNat.
Q: as for technique, do you change it a lot?
A: to rebuild the technique completely is an utopia. That would be the biggest mistake. That’s why we are not rebuilding it, we are correcting some elements. And Yulia is very willing, she’s very self-motivated and hard-working. She started to do tanos with all her triples, even cascades. Of course we are not ready to include it in competitions. We take notes and by the next season we’ll know, what is more stable and use it to make accents in programmes. We work a lot with her skating. Yulia has changed a lot, she’s not that little girl she used to be 2 years ago. Her skating should become more mature, powerful, sophisticated.
Q: Have you chaged your opinion (about Yulia) since you started to work together? Is she the same person people talk about her?
A: I just want to mention some things I like about her. I was very impressed how fast she accepts and reacts. Sometimes I’m just going to say something and she already says –“ I got it” and starts doing. That’s a very good quality for a sportsman.
It is thought, that Lipnitskaya is a difficult person to deal with, very reserved and sometimes bad-tempered. In some way, yes. She has a srtong personality. But to become a champion you must be a tough person. That’s true. What’s more important, she has heart and soul. It is very important.
Many people (my group also) were a little bit tense and nervous before she joined us. We didn’t know how she was going to behave and deal with everybody. Now I can state that she’s an absolutely adequate athlete and she doesn’t play diva or smth. And she became a part of the group from the second day, the first one was not easy for everybody.
That’s what I want to tell about Yulia. I could have told much more, but let’s not to hurry.

Sorry, had to translate fast

This is not a dig at Medvedeva, but I really like this way of thinking when putting 'tanos in a program.

Liza will get the first opportunity. Yulia still has a ways to go but maybe she can prove me wrong. I'd love that of course

You can't win a competition in the SP but you can lose it. And Liza has proved that since she's 0/3 so far.

Liza 2, 5 and 8th at Russian Nationals
Yulia 6,2 and 7th at Russian Nationals

If Yulia does another 68-72 SP and pulls her LP score up with the 2 3T that were missing from Nats she should be ahead.

I just really hope she can have a spot at worlds, the game will be between Liza and her.... Liza seems to have the advantage but I think that she has so wonderful cards to play. and those cards can be very winning.
