Yeah, I don't think they are actually aiming for Worlds right now anyway. Her goal really should be to skate a good free program, and I do hope she accomplishes that. However, part of me keeps thinking it would be amazing if she somehow pulled off a strong skate and got to Worlds...just as a personal achievement for her, not because she will be challenging for the podium or anything. It would put her in a good place going into next year...knowing that she's still in the mix. Of course, while a decent placement (like top 10) at Worlds may boost her confidence...on the flip side of that, having a disastrous outing and losing to girls she could easily beat when at the top of her game might be too hard a blow to bear. I'd rather see her do what she needs to (that is to have a good FS) at this domestic Russian Cup thing, then come back swinging next season.
I think it's such a crappy situation in Russia right now, and I feel bad for Anna. It must be hard, knowing that you can do well at Nationals, win a bronze at Europeans, and
still be in danger of losing your Worlds spot. Yikes! At least when Yulia was trying to make it to Sochi, her biggest threat outside of Adelina was...Alena Leonova

(no offense, really). You're only as good as your last outing in Russia, which I do feel in some ways is more fair and pure a system. And they definitely don't play any games about that, seeing how Adelina and Yulia were Olympic gold medalists and weren't given any favors (they didn't even let Adelina go to Worlds 2014 for whatever reason). I don't see Liza getting any favors either, seeing how she was scored fairly at nationals. So to comment on what the Russian Federation will do if both Liza and Yulia do well (and Anna if she's doing this competition too), it's probably going to be very simple. If Liza is better at
this competition, they'll send her. If Yulia is better, they'll send her regardless of the fact that Liza is the reigning World Champion. If both are meh, they still have Anna...or maybe if they're merciful, they'd send Anna regardless of what happens at the Cup

although I think that's a bit unlikely now and it makes me kinda sad. Honestly, I think that none of Anna, Liza, or Yulia are sure bets right now in terms of potential to do well at Worlds. Liza has not been that great but I think it's because she got burnt out from last season. Maybe if well rested, she can perform since her jumps and everything are still there. Maybe Anna is a slightly safer choice but only because she has seen some great skates in addition to some
really bad ones. Yulia is kind of an unknown because she had some so-so competitions at the beginning...and then we never found out what would have happened with TEB. She didn't get to go to GPF...so we didn't see her until Nationals, where she had an amazing SP (as usual, tbh) and a slightly better FS than she's had in a while. So really, they are pretty even, and I guess it's not all that ludicrous if the Russian Cup is used as a Worlds qualification skate. But wouldn't it be shocking though if somehow that spot went to Maria Sotskova? Hmmmmm
