Yulia Lipnitskaya

Anyone got any choreographer wishlists for Yulia?
For me it's:

Tatiana Tarasova - something dramatic, with an epic step sequence, with all the 'money' elements placed at the key musical moments/crescendos to correctly showcase Yulia's lines and flexibility to the utmost effect.

Phillip Mills - a program with great emphasis on posture, lines (from toes to fingertip), holding those gorgeous positions, and musicality (ie. being on your music)

Rohene Ward - something lyrical or unique that flows effortlessly from start to finish. A little quirk here and there wouldn't hurt either. So long as he DOES NOT have final say on her costuming.

Anyhow, these are my picks. Besides just getting a program that will utilise her skills effectively, I think Yulia can also learn SO MUCH from them.

Yes please, I need that in my life. Yulia must have a dramatic Swan Lake or Rachmaninoff program at some point...it was meant to be. Just for the love of god, do not let this woman get involved with costuming.

I'd like to see her match choreographer with the music. If she has a favorite choreographer, then choose from music that is a favorite of that choreographer. If she has already selected a piece of music, then choose a choreographer whose strength matches the style of that music. Lambiel is perfect for jazzy Leaves, but his improvisatory style is wrong for Leningrad. Zueva's attention to structure was ideal for Leningrad, but would have been too square for Leaves. If she chooses carefully, variety of experience will be a big plus.

She needs to continue working with Lambiel. The way she moves and makes shapes with her body are a perfect match for his programs. He owes her a lasagna dinner anyway ;)

So what did you think of her jumps, Isabel?

I thought they were amazing in the short program. Very sure-footed and with good flow. Well maybe the flip exit seemed a little bit off but she was very close to the boards so some of that might have been me just freaking out for a moment until she went into the spiral. The program as a whole seemed completely polished and ready to skate in competition immediately.

With the long program I read the whole test skate thread first and after reading some of the comments I had decided to wait until Nepala to watch it. I resisted all of one day. (So much for willpower. ) When I watched it I thought her jumps were pretty good. Definitely not as sure as in the SP but she fought for all of them. The program doesn't seem complete because they're still planning on tweaking it during the year but it's encouraging that she went for three combos. The 3T seemed short on rotation but she has worked though whatever was leading her to pop jumps and I would say that's the most promising sign. As long as she jumps and rotates them she will be able to vy for the top medals.

What did you think of them?

Thanks, Isabel. Unlike last year, there was none of the hesitation, scaling down, popping and boards in her way. Alexei seems quite good at prescribing reasonable goals. He has apparently convinced her to accept his pace, she recently said that the single obstacle is whether there is enough time. I look forward to your technical comments later this year.

With an epic step sequence? To epic music? And with an epic face? :rolleye:

LOL...if by 'epic music' you mean Tchaikovsky, then I am all for it. 'Swan Lake' (or Black Swan OST) would suit her nicely, and if she is feeling particularly ambitious, why not '1812 Overture'?

As for 'epic face', Yulia's not exactly a skater prone to giving cheesy, camera-mugging, over-the-top facial expressions (not that there is anything wrong with any of that). I'd imagine any 'face' she does give, would be a 'toned-down' version of any face-cues she was given. Depending on the program, sometimes it comes across as 'not emoting enough', other times it is spot on. So...to each their own. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Yulia give a slightly bit more 'face', especially if it is for a more dramatic program. :)

Just as teachers specialize, every performer and coach has an area of strength, and that strength usually becomes a weakness when performing or coaching in other areas. Yulia gushes over Lambiel's improvisations, she describes how she imitated his movement while skating with him. She absorbed enough to improvise her performance in the Magic on Ice show. The audience loved it, she was so good that many thought it might be one of her upcoming programs. As Yulia puts it, I have another horse.!! But Lambiel's style would fall flat with epic music. Yulia is still experimenting. For best results, she should employ various choreographers each chosen to match the style of a specific program. If she eventually locks into a favorite (personal) style (perhaps an epic style, ha), then she can safely lock into a single choreographer. A choreographer could also help her find music, a perennial problem.

An epic face shouldn't be very expressional. It should be Epic. A stony face will do. Actually, we have just seen a nice collection of epic faces. :)
