Yulia Lipnitskaya

Interesting to compare Elena's interview with Yulia's final interview (Sept. 2017). https://www.fsrussia.ru/intervyu/31...rnuta-u-menya-novaya-zhizn-i-novye-plany.html

Both described their acute anxiety over ending their careers. Asked what scared her the most, Yulia said "Unknown. The worst thing for me was to understand what next? ... a new life."

Remember also Elena's statement about the Academy: "We will be distinguished by the fact that we will talk about sports psychology and innovations. I think psychology is generally an important part of coaching. If the coach does not feel the athlete, this is a very bad specialist. A bad coach is worse than a bad surgeon."

Yulia is gifted in expressing herself with symbols. Remember this one from last March at Staritsa?

Standing alone on the frozen Volga river (river, itself a symbol of the journey of life, the flow of life), a perplexed gaze onto the snow. Her life interrupted.

Can young skaters be protected from the trauma of forced retirement? Elena and Yulia will no doubt confront this issue in a major way, one among their "very ambitious plans" which the Academy will announce when the time is right. We have a lot to look forward to.

Everytime I hear music used by Julia in past it bring back memories of her skating and Polina has Leningrad ....

Unfortunately the music is the only similarity with Polina. When we watch Yulia's Leningrad, we see her interpret the music using symbols of loss of her sweetheart. First the distant gaze and extended arm with body frozen, then looking down into empty arms while stepping backward, followed by a beautiful sequence of falling arms, partial embrace, extended arm with upright palm, hands behind the back. Each of these movements suggests loss. Plus we see her usual poetic sensitivity to the notes and mood of the music. Her movement expresses the notes and mood of the music, and that same movement also portrays her sense of loss. This is music interpreted, not just imitated. Interpreting music is mostly ignored in competitive skating. My comments above refer to the first 25 seconds of this performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65rRhn7cbaQ&t=24s

Yulia's ability to interpret will be more at home with Plushenko, where interpretation is essential. Judging from Nutcracker, Anastasia Martyusheva will be a soul sister. Watch the way she interprets at the beginning of the grand pas de deux. In this sequence she is falling asleep. First she slowly glides on one foot (we see this movement later at the beginning of Plushenko's final solo, his tribute to dreams), then drifts backwards and falls (literally falls) asleep into the arms of her prince, who gently pushes her into another world, the world of dreams. When her eyes open again, she is in a dream of love. The softness of movement mirrors the sound. This level of interpretation is exactly what Yulia accomplished in Leningrad.
Watch the first 30 seconds of this clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0hyAvR5eVA&t=3596s (begin at 59:57 if it doesn't cue automatically)

Audiences recognize meaningful interpretation, we recognize it through personal involvement and emotions that are evoked by a good interpretation. When it's really good it will melt our hearts. If Yulia can get into the music, Plushenko's will be her dream world.

People in line for Yulia's autograph and selfies. Still. Yulia is unique indeed. :) https://twitter.com/sportexpress/status/1063485494150000640

That's beautiful and all, but I have this awful feeling that they're going to steal the story of this friendship and turn it into season two of that horrid anime. :rolleye:

Still! Her integrity and warmth are unforgettable and so appealing. Obviously she wants to communicate with us. It is really unfortunate that she can't trust the press, her interviews brought us closer through another dimension.
