She did say that her English was pretty bad. I'm pretty sure she would have love to converse with Mao and Carolina if it wasn't due to the language barrier. Also there was cameras and people there recording them talk, like who wouldn't feel uncomfortable in a situation like that?

Personally I like that Yulia seems uncomfortable in some of that gala stuff. Shes a serious fierce competitor. Not some icecapades skater. She doesn't need to or want to put on some fake overly happy act or pander to a crowd. Thats what makes her stand out to me.

It's not only her, a certain gold medalist also acted awkwardly when he was standing beside I/K team and other skaters at the line up final in the gala. I guess it's because they are still children at heart. It's fine. They will get used to it. Or they might never. I prefer they being cute that way.

Yeah I think it's because of the language. I saw the Sochi Gala rehearsal on youtube, and she was talking an laughing with Adelina, Elena etc. there.
I see nothing awkward in that video though. Just someone who can't speak english or japanese and was smiling.

I'm fine with her not speaking english. It's not a criticism. Not everyone should speak english.

No I've albanian origin (born and raised in Albania) and italian Citizenship (my grandmother was italian). I've been living in Italy since 30 years now.
I think it will be good for her since she has so many fans there, and she likes Japan.
Also, it's not a language that everybody is learning, and english is much easier so she could still learn english as well.
