Does anyone think there should be more consistency of how her name should be spelled. It should be Yulia Lipnitskaya which is the proper spelling. Yet even on this forum title its spelled different. And NBC is still putting it the other way too. It just seems like ppl could get together and decide on one spelling.

I prefer Yulia, because it's more similar to russian 'Юлия'. This variant is also correct according to English wiki page of the letter 'Ю'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yu_(Cyrillic)

But in fact, 'Julia' is also correct.
And there's one more correct variant. It's 'Yuliya'. The wiki page of the russian letter 'Я': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ya_(Cyrillic)

My wife's name is 'Юлия' and she has the name 'Yuliya' in her passport. So it's not a big deal.

I use Julia because (1) I'm used to it and (2) other Slavic languages using the Latin alphabet use J for English Y. I prefer using J or I because Y is also used for another vowel with a different sound. I don't think it matters too much as long as everyone knows who we mean.

I write her name "Julia Lipnitskaia", simply because that is her "official" name according to the ISU.

(I rather imagine that is why this thread title is named as it is. If people see her on TV, the name they see on screen, is likely to be the ISU spelling... and that is how they will find this thread if they google the name ;-D)

However if I speak her name, it will be "Yulia".

Don't see how it matters any. There's no confusion as to who we are talking about... :-D

On another note....am I the only one who wishes this kid would be resting! She skated as hard if not harder than anyone all season! Seeing her fall like that makes me wonder if her heart is still in it. Lets face it. She just completed a 6yr quad. The goal was clear for her from age 9 when she moved to Moscow with one purpose in mind. To be in the Olympics. Well thru hard work and tremendous success she did it. So what's next? What does she want and what will be her drive? I'm just not sure if its in her best interest to be skating so often after a such an intense year. Apparently those around her feel differently but I'm starting to feel worried. Hopefully she is getting paid well and having fun more than anything else. my question is does she really need to keep skating these two programs still? She should be doing gala type skates and exploring herself for new ways to emote and mostly just to enjoy skating. .

Same thing happens at JFS. I was kinda sock when I saw the list of ice shows Yuzuru have to attend all this summer. I don't know how much profit Russian Fed and JFS make from these teenagers, but surely that's a lot. I mean, these talents should be wrapped up in cotton wool, but all the feds are so greedy. I am so worried for these youngsters.

It's sickening she is being overworked like this. 2017 and 2018 matter most for Yulia not now. But now is when she can easily be injured from over training and over performing her routines.

Remember Adelina didn't go to worlds so she could rest. :sarcasm: Yeah and do a bunch of shows for money after worlds. There really is no reason for Ade and Yulia after such long seasons should begin their next seasons before the Moscow event. They need as much time off as possible. I do not want either of them skating in September.

I believe this alphabet is called the Roman alphabet.

I'm trying to "convert" to writing Yulia, but I might forget from time to time.

I too worry about Yulia overworking. Even if she's the one who wants to do it, she could injure herself to the point of shortening her career, as Tara did. (I detect similarities in temperament between these two champions.) I want to see her around for a long, long time, because it will facilitate her development into a mature artist. It's wonderful that she's already an "old soul," but I want her to experience the complete career arc, and I want skating audiences to witness it as well.

I completely agree. I know it's hard these days but I would love to see her skate for a long time, like Irina and Michelle.

I love how Chris Howarth from Eurosport spoke about her: "She thought on her feet. There's an old head in those young shoulders".

OTH: I really like the social aspect she is being exposed to. Ever since the Olympics she seems to be much more personal and I think is growing out of the me against the world phase which maybe was interpreted by some as icey. This may translate into her on ice personality as she starts to put faces to the crowd she performs to. Her VK is littered with her holding little kids and smiling or just signing autographs for people that absolutely adore her. I still wish she would drop Schindlers and skate a fun Gala piece like je t'aime. Seems safer and more fun to me. As I ranted yesterday I am a bit concerned and wish she was resting. She is clearly the star of these shows and hopefully being rewarded as such.

She is so appealing, how could I not be? Thanks to you and some of the other GS posters for giving such helpful evaluations of her performances. I think Yulia has the potential to be one of the longtime greats. I don't yet have a sense of the other Russian girls as skaters, but this season Yulia's strength has made itself compellingly evident--even to a slowpoke skating fan like me! I'm eager to see how she develops artistically as well as technically.

I hope she continues on the path she's on. She already conveys more passion with her skating than the other girls, and I agree with the New York Times dance critic who said her style tends toward drama. Even Yulia admitted as much in a recent interview when someone asked her why she doesn't skate to something 'fun'. She's aware that she is well-suited to skating serious and even somber music. I agree though that she shouldn't always be somber. Perhaps 'fun' could also refer to something along the lines of Kill Bill or Sabre Dance, which she is also good at (action drama). I wouldn't expect any smiles in her programs though.

Also, I'm fairly certain that je t'aime is actually quite a moody piece of music instead of a 'fun' one. It is about a woman moaning over a painful breakup.
