Yulia Lipnitskaya

Just remind the haters that Yulia had more gold medals this season than Wagner, Gold, Edmunds combined.

What color do you think Yulia's outfits for next season should be. I think red since its her signature color. And either Russian flag blue or purple with metallic gold accents.

The colour will likely depend (to some degree) on the music she selects. She certainly looks nice in red, though I'm not sure she'd want to always be labeled as the girl in red.

Personally, I'd like to see her wear some brighter colours. I thought the colour of her first SP dress this season was quite nice, and the pale lime green dress she wore at the banquet was cute as well.

Oh, little Romeo and Juliet!
Anyways, I think she looks great in blue, red, and black. :yay:

Let's not go into black yet. Half of the Russian team is always in black. she is a young girl; I am sure she can manage some colour.

Ilya Averbukh interview (about Lipnitskaya, Kovtun, I/K)

This is the part about Yulia.

Q: Besides the «Ice Age» and the tour, you work as a choreographer in the competitive sport. The world was amazed by the programs that you choreographed for Julia Lipnitskaya, and with Julia herself. Did you expect the programs to have such a success?

A: I will say a shocking thing, perhaps, but the choreography in competitive figure skating is is just in its infancy. I do not see any problems at the moment at all, working on choreography with eligible athletes. Because if you suggest an idea, and it makes the athlete not just skate waving his arms, then that’s it… Accordingly, I do not think I’ve done something outstanding with Lipnitskaya. My work in the "Ice Age" is much more accurate, thoughtful, more difficult to perform. And why Julia's program is memorable, why it worked - that's because I told her: "We are not going to suffer [skating] to this music, despite the fact that the music is sad, no hysterical movements, no labored gestures."

Q: What’s quite typical for skaters .

A: Especially Russian skaters. And all this suffering in professional circles has its own name: «The Russian have an upset stomach again." It’s time to get rid of it, forget that already, a different perception of the world has to come. So with Julia , I just brought some meaningfulness in her movements. It is important to understand what you do, and who you do it for. Very often the choreographer sees only himself in the art and tries to create images as if it’s him skating. I watched Julia for several days, I understood her, I got this feeling of her. And I only had to help her, keeping her brilliance, lightness, individuality, emphasizing what needed to be emphasized. It worked out then, although now we nervously listen to different music, looking for …

Q: Because next season, people are expecting something extraordinary from you again.

A: (laughing) I do realize that!

Q: Ilya, you said you were watching Lipnitskaya… What did you see? She leaves an impression of a very serious girl, with a prickly character at times. Is there a child in her somewhere? Because she has responsibilities of an adult.

A: There is everything in this mix, as you say (and you are right to some degree). Julia puts up a barrier at first. You need to earn her trust. It’s an important story. Secondly, she is inherently very analytical. She can see herself from an outsider’s point of view. It’s also an important story.

Q: How does it look in practice?

A: When I suggest some movement, we have a dialog. Julia does not just repeat - she analyzes: «I think it’s better to exit like this, and don’t do this, for example». She is ready to defend her point of view. For example, if we find some movement. Even if she is told to change it, she clearly says: «No, the choreographer set it like this, I won’t change anything». It shows her strength, shows that she has some right attitude. Of course, Julia is going to change. She is 15, she will grow up, her character will evolve. I think it’s better to turn down the heat around her for now, and let her prepare for the next four years in peace. Women’s skating is very strong in Russia at the moment, there are incredibly strong girls. Nevertheless, Julia has all the chances to keep everyone on edge for the next four years and win next Olympic Games.

Q: We’ve known that talented 15 years old schoolgirl for a while, but you have to agree, many things have to fall into place for a star to be born.

A: I think the main factor was that Julia had a very unsuccessful previous season. Everything went wrong, was falling apart… And it always makes the athlete and the coach alert. Eteri and Julia did their homework, learned from the mistakes, and prepared differently this time. By the way, when Julia suggested the music from The Schidler’s list….

Q: She imagined herself being a girl in the red coat.

A: No, she didn’t, not the girl in the red coat. She just liked the music. Because it was sad, and she was sad after the previous season. She liked it, she skated to it. At first I wasn’t very excited about the music, it’s used too often, it lacks originality. But I like a challenge. Not to create something I saw and came up with, but to try and love something the athlete loves and to see her in this role.

Q: There soon be dramas in this generation of incredibly talented girls. Three spots on the team, so many skaters for these spots. Some will switch to another county, someone will probably switch to pairs…

A: It will happen naturally, nothing to discuss here. The strongest will win, the weakest will step aside. If someone is destined to skate pairs, they will. Nothing artificial about that. I see the one big advantage: competition is always an engine of moving forward. I am sure that in this blood bath… and it’s really a blood bath, you just have to visit the ladies’ practice.

Q: When Lipnitskaya and Pogorilaya train on the same ice?

A: Not only them. Buyanova’s group, Tutberidze’s group. it’s just fireworks of jumps, the most difficult jump combinations, even the youngest try to do it. They push each over, get each over worked up. There is usually more relaxed atmosphere in practice, and you can see unbelievable difficulty in jumps. And it’s the girls who do it, 12-13 years old. It’s a machine that had geared up… There was a constellation like that in Japan some time ago. And you can never predict who will win. In a year, we can see completely different girls on top.

It's a good read. Thanks Alba. I enjoy Ilya and his honesty. Russia is a scary place if you're a young lady figure skater and I'm just hoping Yulia continues to have the strength and patience to see it thru. She has all the tools and then some, including a strong team around her.

Even if she is told to change it, she clearly says: «No, the choreographer set it like this, I won’t change anything». It shows her strength, shows that she has some right attitude.

Really interesting!!

Hope she wins but I think it depends on whos voting. People voting she will win. American writers voting she won't.

American writers voting she won't.

You never know. They're not voting for Adelina for sure. So they're either gonna vote for Yuna or Yulia.

She has never had influential patrons among the elite of her national federation. She didn't have special conditions during her preparation for the Olympics, unlike some other members of the Russian team. She didn't have a "special squad" of specialists from sports research institutions, and she didn't have vast financial resources for her training.

Is he referring to Adelina here?;)

Thanks! I was looking for this today after I saw Yulia had posted photos of it on her VK. Sounds like she's the star of the Ice show!! I wonder if she's doing any more shows after this one ends later this month? She had mentioned Japan but I think I read that there was a problem with Adelina being there to.

SOI in Japan has just finished, so I guess Adelina will come back to Rusia soon. I hope Yulia will go to Japan and enjoy her free time there for a while.

MOSCOW, April 22. / Correspondent. ITAR-TASS Albert Starodubtcev /. Olympic champion in the 2014 Games in team competitions in figure skating Julia Lipnitskaya in an interview with reporters said that is not going in the next four years!!

"In the next four years I will think only about figure skating - said athlete. - I will participate in competitions and shows. I get the pleasure of participating in the show, but it's serious work, as the competition itself. April 27 show Ilya Averbuch I will be performing with his Olympic program, and try not to make mistakes, let there are no referees. What is the difference from the competition show? spectators in the stands perceive these events in different ways. "
