Yulia Lipnitskaya

This is so stupid, how can you reserve the name?
Lipnitskaya is common name, I bet there are several if not dozens Julias L. in Russia... Will they need permission from Daniela to use their names? :rolleye:

I think it must be something to do with her (Yulia's) person as well, not just the name, like Yulia the figure skater not Yulia the architect, for example. Must be something to do with using her name for advertisement, if I'm not mistaken?
I don't know what the problem is and I don't understand it very well from that piece only.

This is not stupid at all. ON the contrary, they should've done it a long time ago, because this procedure will take alot of time(a year). Julia is very popular now and many people are trying to take advantage selling their products under her name, false interviews etc. According to the Russian law this is the only way her mom and team could protect her. It won't stop everybody because as I said maybe only Putin is more famous than Julia now in Russia(the retio risk-profit) but the magority will think better.

You can't patent a human name, are you serious?
It's not an invention and it potentially belongs to many people (in this case - other Julias L.)

Lets assume they patent "Julia Lipnitskaya" - nobody can use that name in commercials, articles without Daniela's permission - what if one of those other Julias becomes famous - lets say she becomes an actress. In the case "Julia Lipnitskaya" is patented that person could not be written about, earn in advertising, practically could not make a living. :rolleye:

maybe here it is a question of an image, instead of a name?
p/s. and in general such feeling that they are inter-season period expenses as in view of lack of real news newsdealers should think out the virtual

Person's image is for sure already protected in Russian law without need of patenting.
If they make a commercial saying: "Julia Lipnitskaya, Olympic Champion loves our chocolate" without her permission, Daniela may sue them and win compensation. I mean, I ain't lawyer, but can't imagine how possibly Russian law could lack this possibility.

btw - is really Julia more famous than Putin? what about Sharapova?

1. Patents are completely different to Trademarks.

2. Please, let's apply a bit of real-world common sense before getting hysterical?

It won't mean that other people can't use their own names. It just means that journalists, advertisers, entrepreneurs and other scumbags... risk being sued if they attempt to use/exploit "Julia Lipnitskaia" for profit, to imply endorsement, etc etc... when they are clearly referring to THAT Julia Lipnitskaia, the skater. It will give them legal options to protect Julia, her reputation etc etc, where they currently have none.

Realistically, Julia's mother/team are not going to sue people willy-nilly because they happen to have the same name, and use it legitimately. Why would they waste their time?

Spot on!

As far as Julia popularity, the girl can't walk freely on the streets now in Moscow , people(from all ages not only kids) stop her everywhere, do you know what this mean for a huge city like the Russian capital? And it all happened within the last 3 months.

Don't forget Sotnikova.

Volosozhar is arguably more prolific than Lipnitskaia seeing as how she managed to get 2 golds, including the individual gold.

Lipnitskaia however does deserve a lot of her popularity for easily defeating the competition in the individual event and sealing Russia's gold (although, Kostner should have placed ahead of her in the SP, not that it would have changed the final results).
