Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

I think Yuzu skating clean has no threat unless Javi will skate performance of his life in both sp and LP  But skating clean in both sp and LP was not best part of Yuzu mainly because of that quad sal ;)

I would like Yuzuru to win another titles, but I also want Javi to win a title, eh :scowl:

Fellows, please, keep updating the media thread if you have a free minute, it's really hard to stay tuned now(in my case, due to exams), even though it's an off-season. Me and other slowpokes would be utterly grateful for that.

By the way, what happened to Artur Gachinski?

Anybody has information?

After junior competitions, 2011 Worlds and 2012 Worlds, I expected a beautiful rivalry between Yuzuru and Artur in future a lot :ohwell:

He resembles Plushenko too much in a sense, which I like and dislike at the same time, but anyway, he used to be my No. 1 candidate as Yuzuru's rival :disapp: Rather disappointing.

Sorry to say this, I don't feel a sort of aura from Kovton.

It seems he's been struggling both physically and psychologically... this season he has had an hard time getting over the 220 points, he is nowhere the form of worlds 2011 or europeans 2012

Yes. If all we cared about was who was at the top of the podium, then should we forget Mao's Sochi free? I think it is interesting to discuss threats but in the end Yuzuru will most likely finish not-1st many times in the future. Does it matter his placement as long as he skates with emotion and programs that move?

(but on threats - a lot of people think Kovtun will be a threat in the Pyeongchang medal contenders thread. even though I don't like him I thought it would be fit to mention.)

At this point Yuzuru winning first may npt be as important as it was for him and for his fans 4 years ago because he has achieved 3 of them in just one season. I, too, doesn't think much of it as long as he does clean performances from now on haha. However, in the end of it all, winning those competitions matters cause that's the reason Yuzuru's working hard. For others it may seem okay but for a competitive person like Yuzuru, that gold medal is the ultimate goal.

Me too. It breaks my heart to see someone as talented as Javi to take 2nd or 3rd even after doing his quads perfectly just because of a popped lutz or other triple. I don't know if it's a mental thing but isn't landing your quads supposed to give you more confidence to do he other stuff? That's his difference with Yuzuru who just powers thru every triple like he didn't fall on that quad sal. Javi has to learn that or else he will be surpassed.

Well, he's recently moved to Moscow to train with Tarasova and according to the latest interview, he's optimistic about his future, to put it briefly. He says it's actually the first time he enjoys skating(in the context — meaning he greatly improved his skating skills and can "feel" the ice now).
A fun fact - he isn't too fond of being compared to Plushenko - to say the least :)
Edit: forgot to mention - he's still recovering from the back injury.

I hope artur regains his motivation and confidence again. As for kovtun, I just don't see it in him yet.

done ;)

Actually, I've got a request of my own.
I've seen several versions of Hana wa Saku on youtube, and the people in it always seem to hold the same kind of flower. I'm pretty sure those are gerbera, but I could be wrong about that.
I know that there's a Japanese version of the language of flowers (of course, cultural differences and all that) I just don't seem to find anything about this specific flower (google refuses to be helpful, at least in any language I understand, and keeps giving me different answers)
Maybe one of you could help me out and satisfy my curiosity (Maybe one of our lovely Japanese speaking contributors has a green thumb or is willing to look it up for me? :))

Yes, it's gerbera(ガーベラ)! The language of flower is "mysterious, adventurous spirit & patience".

see more information in Japanese.

By the way, update some news about Yuzu's new ex "花は咲く" as following:

* Promotion materials in Women Weekly.
* NHK will increase the broadcast of program by random instead of 24 time announced previously.

Too much stuff in the last two threads to quote it all, so I'll just reply randomly. ;)

I must say, I'll take Sochi disaster over another Evan Lysacek. (I will never agree with the Vancouver results, and it initially had nothing to do with quad. I just thought Evan's skate was ZzzZZz and thus pulled for Plushy--I wasn't yet a fan, but he brought me back into figure skating for the first time since Michelle Kwan retired. When I later watched the SPs and realized how safe Evan played it jumps-wise, that just confirmed by feelings).

At least Patrick and Yuzu both have special qualities about their skating--Patrick and his edgework, Yuzu and his incredible jump quality, especially 4T and 3A. Even if they didn't skate their best in Sochi, and I think both of them make for better Olympic champions than Evan. I have massive issues with the "rotate and fall" scoring system, but I'll have bigger issues with a sport that stagnates. 2014 Worlds gives me hope.

I hope Artur comes back strong. He is a much, much better performer than Kovtun for me. I'd much rather have Artur as Russian #1 for the next four years. Maybe he'll move away from TAT during Olympic year so he doesn't get hit with Koreavengeance (I should copyright this term!).

I'm not convinced about Han Yan. Maybe it's just that I find his SP this year rather... cringe-worthy, but I don't think he's a sure bet yet. I really hope Javi wins at least one World title! Imo, he was robbed of bronze in Sochi by overly harsh Zayak rules and Ten's overscored SP (I'm happy for Ten and it was probably to make up for him getting robbed at the 2013 Worlds, but Javi was better across two programs).

Thank you guys for the information :yay:

Tarasova..... Hmmm... Mixed feeling

I want Artur's revival before long anyway :agree:

I also like Artur a lot and prefer him to Kovtun, but part of me would like to see Kovtun step up and show that he can be better than "good average." Maybe they will develop a healthy competition like Javi/Yuzu training together. I think Adian Pitkeev is actually the most Plushy-like of the Russian men (well, still more of a boy in his case). Watching him it's eerie how much he reminds me of a young Plushy...not only because he used the same music, but because of his confidence and way he moves. I don't know when he will be able to do quads, but when/if he does...look out!

As for Lysacek...no comment! I don't think he has much going on upstairs; he's very robotic and I dislike him as a person and a skater. But that's water under the bridge (and I said I had no comment, oops :p). Vancouver turned me into a FS fan even with (or because of) all the drama and after it put me through the emotional wringer. I didn't know what I was missing!

It's good for Yuzuru to have strong competition. It would be a real snoozefest if nobody was capable of touching him. I like to see his fighting spirit come out.

【Video】Simply, thank you Yuzu!

At TOI, Monkey Majik (rock band) sang the last song "ただ、ありがとう (Simply, thank you)."

Find a fan made this wonderful video with the song. Most clips are high quality in this off-season; ceremonies, ice shows, interviews, press conference and etc. So many joyful shots makes me smile in midnight. Thank you, the shinning boy!

He actually needs a strong competition in order to show his best. He is not comfortable being considered a sure fire winner. He needs to chase smbd to win, to fight, to earn the gold gloriously. I hope Javi brings stronger performances on the upcoming season. I don't think Machida is happy with loosing the Worlds' titile, he could be another strong rival.
Kovtun is the most promoted by Russians and if he owns his nerves he can actually jump his multi-quads and even if I'm overall not charmed with his skating style he might be consirederd a contender. Artur on the other hand had lost his international success but who knows what TAT has for him on her sleeve. He had actually changed the boots with shorter heels (Mishin for Plushy style) to the usual ones and said his skating already feels different, those who saw him performing during the Russian show said he actually skated like never before, less Plushy-like and more expressive. I'm sure he'd like to regain his points again and might actually fight for the first spot in Russia.
May I be the only one who actually liked the programs from Han Yan last year? I think he might actually be a threat for the upcoming season or two, maybe more, who knows. I love his 3A, and if he comes with couple of solid quads...
I guess I'd love to see if Michael Christian Martinez could become an Olympic threat. His history could be quite intriguing if he finds a proper financial support. He's got the gift and is very popular with the crowd.

Also I'd love to see Adian Pitkeev progress. I love his fluid skating. In case he works with good choreographers he might actually be more artistic.

BTW- Brian Orser has smbd else to claim next Olys gold- Nam Nguyen. That Toronto Club might actually become a crowded place for three contenders...
