Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

Although I'm not such a fan of R&J 2, his Ina Bauer at the climax of the program is an amazing piece of choreography.
I'm with you on that. The way he executes this move always looks amazing but at this point in the program it certainly has an enormous wow-effect

I love the ina bauer moment, it's so special. I always get goose bumps at that part of the program.
I remember I didn't like the ina bauer at the Notre dame program, it had nothing to do with the music at that point and it looked like "ok, now I have to do this move...ok...next" I think his programs get better and better and I'm looking forward for the next season.

AHH I'M SO PROUD OF YUZURU! He's so determined—that boy wants everything and he's going to give it his all to get it. Props to him. I want his determination and grit, haha. That is a CLUTCH performance. I am so, so, so impressed.

It was so cute how the Eurosport commentators were like "YES!" when his score was called out. I'm sure they were rooting for him, heh.
AHH, it's been a good day! College acceptances and my BB won Worlds!

Double congratulations! :)

Just saw on my twitter that Yuzuru is a Human Sciences' student of Waseda University(on-line degree, of course). Another wow.. this kid is amazing.

In Japan, Waseda is a prestigious school, pretty much like Princeton or Columbia in US. I don't know how he get accepted there. Online degree or not, he is awesome nevertheless, given the fact that he got straight A(s) in highschool.

Yes, my Japanese friend compare Waseda to Oxford-Cambridge too. Cool kid all the same.

He was accepted because he passed the admission test last year like a normal student, if I remember correctly Yuzuru had the written test after the NHK, then he had the oral test Via Skype in Sochi where he skipped the GPF EX because he was too exausted:)

His interview after the short, I'm in awe of this kid. Never blame anything or anyone but himself and is always so honest.

Yuzuru Hanyu - interview after Worlds’ SP - 140326

Q: Your mood right now?
A: Not content. Very unhappy.

Q: What point makes you the most unhappy?
A: It doesn’t need to be said; of course it’s the 4T. I feel like it’s been forever since I’ve done one that’s so bad. From when I started the jump, I sensed that something was off. In the end, I have to prepare better and adjust for tomorrow.

Q: As the person who achieved a world record in SP and became Olympic champion, is there anything different about participating in this event?
A: No, there’s nothing that’s really different. It’s just that this time, I planned to enjoy it. Even though my opening 4T was a failure, I still thought that as long as I did well on the rest of the elements that had high GOEs, I would still be able to top 90 points. I tried to keep my focus until the very end, so I feel like after skating this program for two years, I’ve truly developed a lot.

Q: This year’s Worlds are taking place in Japan after nearly eight years. Is there anything that you feel is different from usual?
A: There are a lot of people in the audience, but this time a lot of the competitors have shown very clean and unique performances. In the beginning I was hoping that I would also be one of them.

Q: How about someone who you’d like to chase in the free skate, given this opportunity?
A: I feel like Tatsuki Machida made a very outstanding performance. I seriously think that this time around, I didn’t do enough practice. I haven’t skated the free cleanly yet, so for tomorrow and the next day I have to fix it up and work hard to show a good performance.

——————————————————————————-

Q: How does it feel at the first competition after getting the gold medal?
A: I came to perform with the usual attitude. My mistake on the 4T makes me truly regretful. In practice, I never messed it up either, so it’s possible that maybe I was overconfident or I just got weaker.

Q: Was it before the performance that you started being overconfident?
A: No, that’s not it. I was originally planning on having fun with this time’s SP. Because this time would be the last performing this specific program in a competition, so no matter how I did I made up my mind to enjoy it. Truthfully, I’m happy about it.

Q: Why would you get weaker?
A: The title of ‘Olympic champion’ brings so much pressure, and maybe I was a bit too confident. In regards to this, truthfully the phrase ‘Olympic champion’ itself doesn’t have the meaning of automatically bringing pressure, but being overconfident is my own attitude problem. There was really only one small mistake, but that small mistake made me mess up the 4T, and then my success rate fell, which led to my fall.

Q: Where do you feel like you got weaker?
A: The past is the past; things that I made mistakes on are things that I can’t change. The SP is already over, and all I’m planning is to think more for the future.

Q: Do you think what you have to reform the most is your attitude?
A: Instead of saying reforming, it’s more like I want to become like normal. The day after tomorrow’s skating is something left to the day after tomorrow; today is just today, and tomorrow’s practice is just tomorrow’s practice. Right now’s priority is this interview (laugh). So I won’t especially toil over the future or the past, but focus on the present me.

Q: It’s become a situation of going after first place.
A: I’m very happy. That’s all.

Q: After the 4T, everything was perfect.
A: Even though I messed up the 4T, I wanted to get good GOEs to break 90 points. GOE is the area with this program where I can earn the most point. Although I minded what happened with the 4T, I’ve already worked hard.

Q: Regarding the free skate.
A: I’ve decided to work hard on that day. Even though I haven’t sorted out my feelings yet, I will sort them out nicely. Today I’ll rest well, tomorrow I’ll practice well, and then the next day I’ll work hard.

Oooh this tickles me so (Columbia student).

Not only has he achieved things people only dream of by the age of 19, he's also an excellent student who's earning his degree at a prestigious university?

*swoons*

I watched once more his FS with British Eurosport commentary and I'm not used to hear that he is called "the king"

They used to call him the prince. Lots of fans call him the ice prince. My friend, who happens to be male I call him Pooh prince. and I call him kiddo.

I misread at first and thought the interview was from after the FS and I was like: what the...??? unhappy??? Seriously??? after THAT??? ...ok, got it, interview after the SP, never mind then :slink: :p
and thanks for sharing makaihime :agree:

I just rewatched today's FS. Again. (yes, I need professional help) and about 1.5 minutes in there's also a really beautiful sequence where he does like 4 spins in a row. and when he does it right (like today) every change and movement absolutely corresponds to the music. absolutely stunning.
...gnah, dammit it, I was totally fine with not really liking the program

I call him "the kid" and I'll call him like this until his last competition (at least 8 years from now on:bow:).
I don't say that I don't like that people call him "the king", but it's funny tha for some people he's already a mature skater while I still keep in mind an innocent childish boy who smiles all the time and plays with Pooh.
But he has nerves of steel and he won almost everything in figure skating at the age of 19.:)

Almost everything? What else does he have left to win? 4CC?

Yeah, first I wanted to say 'everything', then I wrote 'almost' because I remembered the Romanian commentators comparing his performance this season with Yagudin's and saying that Yuzu doesn't have the 4CC to have all 4 in a season.

Since he is only 3 years older than my oldest son, I will always call him kid/kido. But it is so funny to hear so many college kids or teenagers calling him my kid.

I'm not sure the ice prince is special enough for him either. Japan had so many ice prince already in the past. As for the king, I still reserve that title for Dai. Yuzuru needs more time to build his accomplishments not just the winning but giving his fan more memorable moments. I'm sure he'll get there, maybe faster than I can imagine.

For now I think it is time for him to rest. Look at the dark circle under his eyes today make me sad. He is just a kid. He needs his sleep.

1:48-1:50 that little "jump" (I don't know how to call it) ..I love it. The whole season I was fascinated by that move:laugh:

edit: ^I agree, he needs a break after this amazing season.
