Yuzuru Hanyu: 2013-14 Season

I really liked this performance! I think his posture has improved and his gracefulness suits the song to a T.
I wonder how long he had to practice it?

And I expected more jumps but with this song, it is correct. Correct me but he did a 3A and a 2T, right ?

I was expecting more jumps as well. But somebody say that he also did a walley - that single jump. I don't know much about jumps. Is walley special??

According to another Japanese forum, Yuzu only practiced three hours that day and recorded one time OK! ;) Talented!

After watching video, I have some words to say about it.
First for me, hana ni nara was better than this current song, because you can guess the air, the tonality of the song. I mean I often hum hana ni nare when I wait something or when I walk in the street, because the rythm and the tonality of the song come easily in your head. But for the new current song, I don't feel the same thing. Of course the man has a beautiful voice and Yuzu tries to feel us the music and he does well but compared to the previous song, it is worse than the other.l
Yuzuru chose this song, I guess because it's for charity. This song belongs to a project by NHK after the earthquake disaster. They said they will broadcast this ex many times on NHK.

He said he wanted to repay to he support people have been giving him. I think this song sounds better in English version. You can listen to it here: http://youtu.be/wdPOHBJVuSA

It's a group song so I guess it sounds less impressive when you only have one voice in the video.
But if Yuzuru skates to the English version (if he intends to use this ex outside of Japan), then I am sure it will look very interesting.;)

Anyways I like this ex, much better than Ienaiyo or Story and True Love, despite similar style and choreography, it is less dramatic, and more tender and fresh. :)

Oh so this small step was a walley jump, nice to know ! According to what I read, this jump is not special but of course, all gestures/jumps/steps that Yuzu does, are special, even when he falls, it is special so:laugh: . And currently I often watch skating video for trying to identify which jumps the skater does, so I hope for this video, I well see a 3A and a 2T ? Anyone can confirm ?

Wow one shot ! Good works.

I think the two versions are good, and I like the song, I did not say I don't like it, just the air is not identified enough for entering in the head, compared to hana ni nare. But maybe if I listen it everyday, my opinion will change

may i just say something? i think yuzu did a wonderful job on performing the new choreo.

the whole production was a joint project for the earthquake victims. the music was dedicated to the earthquake victims back in 2012 so it has a very significant meaning. so yuzu's contribution was to skate to it.

i think they focused more on interpreting the song rather than adding jumps since its not for competitions ;)
lets be thankful enough that we were even able to see it. (out with the negativity please :))

and hana ni nare and the new ex was sung by the same artist maybe thats why some may find them quite similar.
i dont think he also had a chance to pick a song for faoi because of their guest singer and the same goes to the true love ex.( correct me if im wrong but wasnt it performed on artistry on ice? with a guest singer too?)
i think he much prefer to skate to upbeat songs (this is totally my own opinion though :))

Those tiny sexy moves of Vertigo is so cute!!
someday someone really has to tell him that  "oh, you're doing the sexy moves, that's adorable!"

It is just that I feel that Yuzu seems to pick up the same style of music for his ex recently - Hana ni Nare, the one in FaOI about hometown (言えないよ), and this one. I do hope that he go back to try rock or go out to try any other style of music.

Edit: Now he is always like a pure angel on ice, which is absolutely beautiful, but I am secretly thinking that it would be a bit more fun to portrait some other characters on ice, such as a badass or a playboy? After all, he is going to be 20 soon. I'd love to see how he interprets other type of music and story, and share with us more facets of him (if he is willing to).
I pretty much agree with you :)
that's why, when someone here asked which of the old programs we'd like to see him perform again, the first thing that came to my mind was Change, because that program is nothing but fun and watching him go bonkers on ice is awesome.
That being said, I get why he might want to choose those kinds of programs lately. If it was his choice to make, I don't know. If so, I guess he's still in this mindset of "I want to give something back to the people who suffered alongside with me", and he seems to be serious about this. And when you're seriously dealing with such a serious issue, well, serious is pretty much the name of the game (at least that is how I look at this thing right now, just my humble opinion)

But I agree with you and I too hope that he'll up the fun factor in the future  we've got sublime beauty covered, now I wanna see his inner rock star again

actually this version of the song was the reason I initially dreaded this EX. It was the first version I heard and it sounded just so pompous and kinda in-your-face. It turned out to be such a lovely, sweet melody, but the English version totally kills it in my opinion. I'm also not so sure the choreography would work all that well with this kind of interpretation of the song. Like you said, the style it's rather tender, I'm not sure that really goes with an overwhelming background.
(but again, just my humble opinion, no offense to anyone, we all like different things ;))

I agree!!!! I actually couldn´t make it pass the 1 minute mark with IL DIVO´s voices.

Anyway, this is an "special event" exhibition, he did it in 3 hours for tv for the people affected for the earthquake, I think an exhibition program can´t be compared with a competition one.

Anyway is having a mini tanabata celebration (the city does his big one in august if I´m not mistaking) and also holding an exhibition of Yuzuru´s pictures.

I don't think this EX "Hana wa saku" can be treated the same way as other EX, as it is a part of NHK Project for earthquake/tsunami restoration. Naturally, the tone is controlled, maybe holding back jumps, etc.

This is a version featuring Shizuka Arakawa, Lambiel, Miyu Honda, etc.

Version sung by Japanese celebrities (musicians, actors, actresses, athletes, etc.) from Tohoku area

Also, I think why the recent EX programs are similar is just because they are collaboration with live music and the preparation time is limited. If the songs are all ballad, naturally the arrangement becomes similar, except Change.
(Hana ni nare, Story and True Love choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto, and Ienaiyo by Pasquale Camerlengo)

According to this interview, Yuzuru didn't choose this song. He was asked to skate to it, and he took the offer because it was a good opportunity to do something for the devastated areas of the earthquake/tsunami.

To my Japanese ears, the lyrics are better in Japanese. They changed the English lyrics to suit the melody probably, but in the Japanese version, I get the feeling that the first person speaking might be those who died in the disaster, rather than the survivors which makes me teary every time.

Especially, this part:
(E) there's no missing sorrow and no reason left to mourn = (J) what did I leave behind (sounds like the person has already deceased)

This 5 minute program is going to be broadcasted on all of NHK's 4 channels at various times so that many people, young and old (not just FS fans) get the opportunity to see and hear it to be reminded of the disaster that is slowly disappearing from people's minds. This is what Yuzuru is afraid of and this is what he was fighting the OGM for so it isn't a problem that he's wearing the same costume or skating to the same kind of music because for most people, it'll be the first time for them to see him skating.

Nah, If I remember correctly then Change was not created by Nanami Abe.
I think Yuzuru said in his closing speech at TOI that Nanami choreographed it. He said something about how difficult it was to skate to when she first choreographed it years ago but he's happy that he's able to skate to it again. Maybe lady_bee who was there on Friday the 13th can confirm for us. Calling out for lady_bee, lady_bee!

I know the song is meaningful to Hanyu and I hope it raises a lot of money for charity. That said, it's not going to be one of my favorites. I really don't care for this style of jpop...not knocking all jpop/jrock, as I liked the bands he had in ToI and I would have loved to see what he did with Gille for the Beppu shows. It's just that this type of jpop ballad sounds like the Japanese equivalent of easy listening to my ears. I don't need big jumps in every ex, but it still felt like something was missing to make it feel fresh. Seems like it was put together in a hurry so maybe it will look better after it evolves a bit, at least I hope so. I prefer his Hana Ni Nare costume also.

It's fine since people have different tastes. Actually I am not that band's fan either (I am hard-core classical fan) but I think the song would sound better with the resemble version than once voice only (either it's Japanese or English) because I feel it sounds rather weak and lonely. And I think they wrote the song not to bring some loneliness to the ears. Anyways it's just my humble opinion. And frankly I much prefer manly and overwhelming voice, rather than a too tender voice like the singer in the clip. you know my type, look at my ava. And I am irrational I know.

Also my point. One of my reasons for stop listening to Jpop years ago was that I prefer manly voice, and Jpop idols voices often don't sound manly that much. no offend to anyone, just my taste.

If so then I hope to see more killer program like Change and Baby I love you in the future from Ms.Abe and Yuzuru. They are fun and Yuzuru looked fun performing them.

Anyways if this EX belongs to NHK project, then there is a high probability he will not use it as an official ex for international competition since he never uses Japanese lyrics outside of Japan. Does this mean we will have a new EX? Or he will use old program for the EX?

meh, would be extremely boring anyway if we were all the same kind of crazy ;)

and I was actually about to ask the same questions.
(unless he uses the English version? ...please don't do it, please don't do it, please don't do it)

Why afraid? I am not fan of it, so I'd be happy if he has some fresh EX prepared with Shae-Lynn or Buttle. And please, no old program for EX!

The choreography was done in haste, just 3 hours so I don't think they will use it as the new EX. Not to mention the English version has different tempo and arrangement, so this choreography won't fit, as you stated.

My wrong choice of words, sorry. I still feel awkward with English now and then since it's not my first tongue. I think there is high probability he will have a complete different EX. Maybe by David Wilson?

What? I thought we were escaping from Wilson this season. What about Lambiel? Can he do an EX for Yuzuru? I hope he's not that busy with Machida again. He's busy with his new skating school though.

My secret wish is for Yuzuru to have one beautiful day a solid Spanish program choreographed by no one else but Antonio Najarro himself. He'll work on Yuzu's posture and he had always created choreos that made guys works like hell. And the results usually were truly astonishing. (Lambiel, Abbott, Joubert). But Yuzu has to grow a bit for it to be a killer sexy and seductive Spanish, not a kid Spanish. That is my wish anyways.:o:
