Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

I don't know, it's quite possible that Yuzu has a concussion and they're just not making it public, but in my opinion Han Yan seemed more out of it after he got off the ice. Once Yuzu could breathe again and got up he was moving around almost constantly and it even looked like he was doing math to figure out his new FS layout, while the second Han Yan got off the ice he collapsed on to his back and didn't move for a long time. Horrible stuff either way and I really wouldn't mind if they both drop out of their next event. I guess we'll see.

That's really worrisome. I know the idea of what's done is done so there's no going back to what happened last Friday. It's everyone's concern that if God forbid something like this happens again, the skaters will be stopped for their own good/ISU enacting some decent changes that will benefit the skaters' health and well-being.

The change should happen NOW. Do we really want to see anything like this again? No. ISU should do something right away.

Absolutely!!! I would hope that the ISU has at least had discussions about what happened last weekend. When football players get concussions (yes it's a more violent sport than figure skating but they're also wearing helmets!!!) they are usually not allowed to play for AT LEAST 3 weeks! At least. Sometimes longer.

The definition of a contusion is an injury caused by a blow to some part of the body that doesn't break the skin and is characterized by swelling, pain and discoloration. A concussion is caused by a hard blow or fall and is usually followed by loss of function (to the head I would assume they mean loss of consciousness)

I'm sure there is much more to either of them but it appears they are pretty similar. Maybe its just the severity of the blow?

Not to be the continual pessimist, but I highly doubt it. This has been an issue for years, and nothing's ever been done. There's no incentive. Fans will continue to watch, individual federations that are subject to governmental injury prevention standards will enact their own rules, and life will go on. Change happens when there's enough of an public outcry, and figure skating just isn't that popular. Not like FIFA, for example. Maybe if skaters themselves start speaking up something might change?

I just hope no one ever forgets what happened.

So here's a really stupid question, but do skaters have organizations that look out for their best interests, like a skating union or something? or does that responsibility go to the federations?

We have more that 1 million views to this thread only on this only forum- do you think we are that few? I think we could do something. Like starting a petition, get it signed. We need to act if they do not.

Sorry for quoting myself here. My friend said we shouldn't too panic about Han Yan, let's wait and see, because the words Han Yan used on his blog can be understood as "impact to the head". It doesn't mean that his brain/head was damaged. He meant his head had a bad impact from outside.

The word concussion might be too strong in this case. It might be that the doctor simply said Han Yan's head was dazed because of the collision. My friend said doctors aren't that stupid to let Han Yan practice without care.

So for the meantime, let's wait and see till the next week. I hope there will be some updates soon about bith Han Yan and Yuzuru's condition. I hope they were just "had some impact to the head" and "not any major concussion".

I have just checked, it's over 1 million and 700 thousands views already. Yes we can do something!!!

Hanyu wins the most views in Fan Fest . congrats :yay:
only followed by Yuna, Julia and Volosozhar/Trankov fests

I agree seeing Han Han collapse like that scared me to death and sent off warning bells in head when he started his FS.

Sorry to pull away from the postings, but thought everyone would like to know of this YouTube channel that subs everything in English (and Thai) and I subscribed to them and they're really quick when it comes to subbing so watch while the channel is still up!

Wow! Both TH & ENG is very impressive :thumbsup: I hope they might consider translating some short vids for other members of Team Japan in the future.

I think the problem with that was that Han Yan got up too quickly. So maybe that why he looks so dizzy.

While both should take care of their health, and this is not a competition of who has the bigger injure. Yuzuru did fall head and chest into the ice, wich Han Yan luckily could avoid, (and Yuzuru´s head actually bonced on the ice like a ball) and that was caused the injure in his chin and head (as far as my analisys of the video could tell).

While the selfish me wants to see a clean POTO/ BALLADE ASAP, I guess is better if he takes his time.

Best wishes for both.

My friend said doctor couldn't reveal the full details of their patients' condition to the public if their patients don't want to (there's some rule or something like that? Like confidential code). And that's why she was quite doubtful of Yuzuru's medical test results. He might not want the public to know more about his condition?
I remember he still has back pain and it's chronic, why they didn't mention it in the article about his test results?
I know I am over-worried and it's better to trust Japanese doctors but still...

I have over 35 years experience as a personal injury lawyer and all patient records are protected by privacy laws. The patient must consent to the release of any medical information. I have represented many Japanese clients who were injured while visiting Canada and Japanese medical institutions have very strict protocols about releasing any information regarding their patients.

Finding random things to talk about until his next appearance... I know people were saying that there's no way that Yuzu can be 171cm any more, well if Nam is 172, then Yuzu definitely must be around 175cm

I'm just speculating cause I'm not even qualified to play a doctor on TV, but it looks like Han Yan took the entire collision force on his jaw. I believe that's a knock out spot, isn't it?

Yuzuru had a double head injury. First when his head struck Han Yan and then again when his chin struck the ice. You can see the force of the impact when he struck the ice because his head flies back in hyperextension. The impacts to Yuzuru's head are way more significant than the impact to Han Yan. When the head impacts a stationary object like when Yuzuru's head struck Han Yan's chin and the ice, there is often a "coup contrecoupe" effect on the brain. (Check it out on Wikipedia.) The symptoms of a closed head injury are not immediately apparent. The JSF and Yuzuru are not going to broadcast details of symptoms that Yuzuru may be experiencing. We will have to wait and see.

Good posts!! Awesome experience you have!

Wait, I thought Brian Orser said Nam was 5'10" (or something like that). If you look at Nam at the Skate America ceremony, he was taller than Jason Brown, and he's only 5'7" (the same height as Yuzuru). If Yuzuru did grew taller, then his ISU profile would have changed by now.
