Yuzuru Hanyu: 2015-16 Season

Has any other skater built up such a rock star following as Hanyu has?

No I think no one has actually.
I would say the closest to Yuzuru rockstar status was indeed Daisuke Takahashi. But Yuzuru is on another level.
Plushenko was a rockstar within the skating world I would say but he didn't have this crazy appeal that Yuzu has on non skating fans.
I think Stephane Lambiel and Johnny Weir (and to a lesser extend Brian Joubert) also had crazy uberfans in their times who were as dedicated as Yuzuru's fans are but they just weren't as many and as impactful as Yuzu's fanbase now.

Yuzu is also blessed with a boy-next-door look. I think his looks attracts many young fans and his manners & humility attract older fans.

I just want to say again how I love the interview with Matsuoka-san! It always seems like he can be totally honest and we get to see/hear a different side of him when they do interview together. Also the first time I think I've heard him talk about Michelle Kwan! :)

He said that he wasn't sure why he cried; he was already crying before the total score came out, and when he looked down and saw Pooh, he cried even more because Pooh has been his "war buddy" and always been there throughout all fights. He said that after he said "why am I crying?", Brian said well it's because you worked hard right? Then he realized he was scared. He said that when he was warming up and Javi was waiting for his score, he missed 3lo while the arena was chanting "Javi! Javi!", so he thought "Damn it! I'm here!" and landed a 3A.

Matsuoka also asked him if he thought about the max score he can get, and how Oda-san and him said he's about 9 points away from the max score he can get. He said he hasn't thought about it. But Oda-san said it's the first time they had to do commentary while using comparison with Max score!

Li'Kitsu, posted about that 3A!
....... Maybe the best example for what sets him apart is the "PrimaDonna Axel" - was that broadcasted in any streams? After Javi skated his LP, the crowd went nuts. NUTS. His score was huge, people shouted "Javi! Javi!" and stomped heir feet on the ground. It was close to scary, and I was terrified for Yuzu, who was already on the ice. But then Yuzu went circling around the ice and came back doing a 3A, probably the biggest 3A I ever saw. And he had a stare when he landed, that gave me a shiver. It said "You will shut up, you will watch me now and I will deliver!"........

I wish there was footage of that. I've only seen the footage where he misses the 3Lo.

I kind of feel sad for one of the jumps because one of them will be retired when the hottest thing 4Lo arrives next season.

Will it be the 3Lo, 3F or 3Lz? They all have been with Yuzu since he was a junior (or even before) For one of them, this season would be the last it will be with Yuzu during competitive performances. It is like Andy abandoning his toys in Toy Story. Which jump will be the Mirai Nagasu of US Nationals 2014?

My guess is the 3Lo will be replaced by the 4Lo. If he pops 4Lo into 3Lo, he won't zayak since there will only be one 3Lo in the program. But if he keeps 3Lo, once he triples the 4Lo, he would be repeating the 3Lo and it will be very difficult for him to avoid zayaking if he already plans to repeat two other jumps.

My guess would be 3Lo, just in case he triples the 4Lo, it makes sense to remove it from the Free to avoid the Zayak rule

Does he NEED the 4lo? I feel like he can go to Olympics with current tech. 2 quads in SP and 3 quads in LP.

I have a hope that he will be able to learn a 3Axel-3Loop combination... that way there would be no double jumps in his program!

However, I don't remember him even adding a 2Loop to any combination in recent years, so it probably isn't that easy to do. Do you think it would be easier for him to do a 3Axel-3Loop or a 3Axel-4Toe?

Yes, he wants new challenges, and also needs to prepare for potential new rivals. You never know when a young skater or veteran skater will out jump him. It's not like the other skaters won't improve in the near future. So better be prepared.

Do you guys seriously think he'll try 4Lo next season? I personally think it's not time yet

Because it feels like the 2015-2016 season has ended, but actually it is only half-way.

Yuzuru has another 6-8 months before 2016-2017 starts.

3Lo hates you but 3F and 3Lz are your fans. (But 3Lo gets to appear when 4Lo pops like a balloon, of course we don't want that to happen.)

I hope Yuzuru carries the feeling he had on that day all the way to the Olympics. The fear, the nerves, the pressure, and also how he overcame every single one of those to deliver his absolute best. Because he can; we know it, he knows it and now we've seen it done, REPEATEDLY.

I was so proud of him before but reading about the atmosphere and also his feelings before his skate, I'm even more so now.

Yuzu is incredible. But I also hope some other exciting skaters will rise to challenge Yuzu before Pyeongchang. I know Yuzu will be legendary in figure skating but like any sports, it'll be boring without competition.
