Yay! Holiday in my country marking the anniversary of our relatively bloodless "People Power" revolution so time to catch up with the Yuzuru thread and all things FS! Thanks for all the links and updates, including Yuzuru's return to Toronto for training with Team Brian.

every Japanese person I've met knows him.

In my case, I bring up his name when I meet someone from Japan. Around two years ago, and I think I posted this in this thread, I mentioned him to a Japanese student staying in the same grad dorm, and she didn't seem to know him and when asked, named "Kozuka" as her favorite skater. Yesterday, we had some visiting professors and graduate students from Yokohama National University who beamed when I mentioned that I am a fan of his. :)

is it just me or does he look more muscular?

He is more muscular, and I think this is not just due to his off ice training but also to physical maturity. And I think he now also shaves (recalling older posts wondering how he'd look with facial hair ;) ). http://yuzu-ice.tumblr.com/post/136181059774/yuzus-beard-stubble.

Wow!! Sharp eyes~~

Hi, This is a partial translation of Brian Orser's forward to his book "Team Brian". Very sincere and courteous; just what I would expect to read from him. Blessings on the translator.

Thank you for sharing, beautiful words from Brian, it makes me smile to read his words, especially when he mentioned Nanami Abe :) I wish they publish the English book, of course Brian wrote this book in English, so it's a little bit weird we have to read the English translation from Chinese which is translated from Japanese which in turn is translated from English? :scratch2::noshake::drama::palmf:

I was thinking it might be that, just that I don't quite understand why would that be considered unhealthy, because you are more prone to injuries?

Actually with no off ice training, he'd be more prone to injuries. It's unhealthy because he thought that he shouldn't gain weight in the form of muscle and considering that eating disorders are very common in figure skating, it's not surprising that the idea got in his head. Not saying he has one, but that he picked up the unhealthy idea that extra weight would be detrimental. That's something that Whitney Phelps (Michael Phelps's sister) dealt with because she also swam competitively and thought if she weighed less, she'd be faster. (Of course she ended up fully developing an ED.) Yuzuru is much healthier now, so no worries.

thanks for your answer. He didn't want to gain muscles because he was afraid that his jump rotations would be harder to do, so I never saw it in a bad way, though as you said he was more prone to injuries.

Of course. I can easily see how it never seemed like a bad thing, but the idea is illogical since it's not like he was going to be hitting anything remotely heavy to hinder him and that combined with context makes it bad. I think if you were to imagine a girl saying that (and how often do we talk about puberty and girls in fs), it makes the situation more clear.

Florent mentions Yuzu in the latest interview:
Florent Amodio: "You skate like this only once in a lifetime"

Do you think figure skating is going in the right direction? Some skaters land two quads in the short program and three or even four in the free.

For sure! It’s the evolution of figure skating. I remember the same discussion with Brian [Joubert], whether it is necessary to have a quad. But we have to raise figure skating to higher and higher levels. What Yuzuru [Hanyu] and Javier [Fernández] do is amazing. We have to go in this direction with all the quads. If it’s possible, let’s do it. But we shouldn’t forget what we give to the audience. We cannot just be like: “Okay, I do all the quads, that’s it, that’s it, okay, bye!” It is a competition, there is an audience, people pay for tickets, we have to give something. I accept that competition is not a show, but we have to give emotion, we have to share something, we cannot just be machines. Figure skating will be famous because of such moments and people will return to ice rinks because they want to see such moments.

You guys we're like mothers  we've followed Yuzuru from a young noodle boy to a grown man with (minimal) stubble and muscles and all hahaha he's all grown up!

Now that I learn more about our boy, I feel the same... are there still any vacancies for mother role?

Looks like yuzu has thousands and millions of mothers!! (Include me please though I'm only months older than yuzu hahahaha)

Guys, I have some news about Winnie the Pooh and Boston. Remember the documentary Ted where a teddy bear name Ted became alive in Boston and grew up to become an adult with his owner.

Well, Winnie the Pooh tissue cover will become alive during the Boston World Championship. We'll be able to see Winnie prancing on top of the boards. Hopefully Brian can catch him before he wanders off. Boston is a magical place you know. Watch the documentary if you have not.

Thanks for pointing it out. I'll change the name.

But the title says Artur Demitriev?

The one you have posted is indeed interview with Artur but he talks there about 4,5 axel he is training and no word about Yuzuru

This is the original interview with Aliev and here are Yuzuru related parts translated by Marina Khevkh from YHIFG
This year made many experienced skaters get down to the ground thanks to the incredible skating of Yuzuru Hanyu and six quads of Jin Boyang. What are your thought about it as a junior?
- Yes, this is the supreme elite of figure skating. Yuzuru Hanyu, Patrick Chan, Javier Fernández they skate at unimaginable level, and I have no choice. I have only one thing to do, to try achieving the same results somehow. I am driven to figure skating that’s why I don’t feel fear when I see Hanyu.
-Jumping like him so organic, naturally in program is this reality, is it achievable?
- It is necessary to set goals, but do not look forward to see what happens.
Masters like Patrick and Yuzuru know what to do . They "kill" not even after entering the ice; they do it already in the warm-up. We, juniors, look up to them and try to do the same. To put out the rival is necessary before entering the rink on warm up. Even his look may affect another skater, but usually we try not to face the eyes.
I am not a skater of that level yet, Yuzuru Hanyu has so many records, right now there is almost no competition for him, but when a rival appears, he wont stop and wait, he will do something new, because he is the highest level., and he will not give what belongs to him I am still far from this company of world figure skating.
So which one to chase Northug or Hanyu? (Petter Northug Jr. is a Norwegian cross country skier Dima's idol)
They're both incredible, two superior in different sports. Well ... it's hard to answer. Yuzuru Hanyu – insane level. Petter Northug - crazy level. Difficult question.
