Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

It's not just because they don't like him. I think main reason is that they all think he will retire when 2018 season ends so they want to invest in someone else. Sigh... if only he didn't mention about retirement so soon right after Sochi.
But nevertheless, I trust his ability. He has done so much for this sport, I think skating fans and ISU own him a lot.

But OGMs usually retire anyway? So, I don't feel like it's much of a consideration...

I do think he's already so famous they don't think they can milk any more money out of him than they already do.

Well but I do think if he suddenly say "I will stay after Olympic 2018", they will treat him kinder :p
But as a fan I am like: "enough is enough, I know Yuzuru loves skating so even if he doesn't do competitions we will still have tons of his performances in ice shows, we have nothing to worry as he will still skate. I just want him to retire healthily and care nothing of ISU!!"

Sadly I agree. The way I see it is for Hanyu to repeat as OGM he's going to have to be perfect. Clean SP, clean FS. Any mistakes from him and bye bye medal and possibly podium.

I'd eat my hat/cat/mat/whatever if he doesn't podium. But clean SP, FS might not be enough -- see: Plushenko, Yuna. Especially if he doesn't up his tech.

They have their heads up their you know what. Not that this is what I care about, but they can most definitely milk a ton more money out of him. He's only getting bigger and bigger worldwide and across Asia before Pyeongchang. The new fans brought in by Yuri on Ice are flocking to him above all (and yes, I think this is a good thing for the sport with no disrespect intended). Despite how it may seem sometimes, I actually do like Shoma, but while he is a nice kid and a great skater, he's not a rock star who will transcend the boundaries of the sport and cause global mania. I think every sick child in Helsinki has a Winnie the Pooh now.

It's certainly a combination of many factors, few of which are favourable to him. However, from the old threads I read here and in other places/languages, and from what we know of his circumstances, my impression is that he has been fighting against the odds basically throughout his career, and he has done very well for himself. I have faith in him.

As for ISU/JSF/whatever rewarding him for what he had done for the sport, I will never bet on those higher-ups having any sort of conscience but what do I know. They are the people who wrote the rule book and then never looked at it twice except when it comes to dinging their most popular male skater.

People were half expecting him to retire after Sochi. Everyone now seems to think he'll retire after PC. It's a belief that comes with those winning OGM regardless of what he says.

Yuzuru is well aware of what he is up against next season, no doubt about it. If we've learnt anything from this WC its that we need to believe in him and be give him strength with our support and cheers

While I agree that consistency plays a role (which is dumb in itself), it makes no sense to assume it was the deciding factor in the scoring of the Men's LP. Yes, Yuzu is inconsistent in executing his layout, but he is still less so than basically everybody else (maybe except Nathan, but then Nathan has only been 'really around' for 3 events) - look at Javi and Patrick being of the podium at GPF (& 4CC) while Yuzu won that, look at Shoma falling twice in 4CC and placing behind Yuzu there... doesn't look to me as if Shomas or Javis score took a hit from 'inconsistency' (Shomas even went up :palmf: )
As for Evgenia: yes, she gets a consistency boost, but people are not giving her enough credit for what she does regarding GOE & PCS bullet points. I don't always like it, but she does check the boxes, so that comparison is not necessarily on point, IMO.

+1. I also thought Shoma looked more focused on getting his tech done than Yuzu & Boyang. But people need something to nitpick with Yuzu and of course Boyang has to stay in his neatly defined 'jumper' box...

As for the spin discussion, pretty funny everyone talks about his spins being so much worse then what he could do, when he still has among the best in field
Not saying the 'complains' about his competition spins are unjustified, but it makes it clear how good a spinner he is ^^

Well I did not say consistency is a deciding factor, I also said skating early affected him, they were making rooms. You have to remember Javi and Shoma were clean in the SP though, so that might left the impression on the judges (not saying it should have but it was what was happening). Regardless, I think most judges place him 1st overall, so eventually it is not a problem. And like I had said too, different panel of judges/tech could have scored this differently, so in the end it can't be helped.
About evgenia, her early scores were not as high, but because of how consistent she is, she gradually got higher and higher, this actually applies to Satoko too. Yuzuru is also actually another example about how consistency would help; his 3A quality imo is always great but he has been receiving many unanimous +3 only recent few seasons because of that.

About the spin, I think most are talking about it in a sense that they know what he is capable of. Yuzuru is the most complete skater for me because of it, partially. He is a really great spinner aside of being a great performer+interpreter+jumper with outstanding SS. So I hope he will find ways to bring it back to how it used to be. His spin deteriorate a bit when he first moved to Orser, but then after Sochi he regained it back. ;)

I wonder if he were doing a 4Lz or 4F they wouldn't hold back so much. As it is, they can mentally make the excuse that Boyang and Nathan have greater jumping prowess. I would still give higher GOE to Patrick, Javi, and Yuzu. When they hit, their quads are sublime.

:otopic: After seeing Medvedeva live, I kind of understand the spell she's put on the judges. You could see it most in the gala program. Gabby and (especially) Kaetlyn miss jumps in theirs (to their credit they were on when it mattered), meanwhile she does two 3-3s with no problem, and then a 3-3-3 during the finale. No fear in that girl. It creates an impression of dominance.
Maybe yes. But if he skate first and is 5th in the SP I don't think it will make much of a difference. He is in a position where judges scrutinize him because he is the man to beat, so small errors from him would be punished, while others are more like the chaser/underdog/black horse so in a sense they are more lenient; yuzuru was in this position to before.
About her, she is a complete package, whether you like her style or not. She is a great spinner, have good SS, and great technical that checked all GOE bullets (and she is damn consistent). I think she is somewhat like Yuzuru in that complete package sense.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with this a lot. Some of the judges had Yuzu ahead of Shoma by very few points, 3 or 4. Now remember that Shoma got all -3's on his 3Lz and had a turn out on his 4T and if he had landed that, he would have made that difference up already. The way the scores were given, clean Shoma would have been maybe been 5 points behind a foot perfect Yuzu in the LP, for some judges above him. Given the jumping quality both of them displayed, the difference in program complexity and so on, that is IMO completely unjustifiable. Even if I accept that skating later has a bit of an influence, those scores are IMO really far away from what was actually put on the ice

But Evgenias scores might be going up because she's improving? Because she is, IMO. Regarding Yuzu's 3A, that's IMO more of an example of a jump finally getting what it should + overall scoring inflation during the seasons. Not just compared from this event to the one one month before.

Yes, that is what I meant and agreed ;)

Well, had Yuzuru landed his 4S3T he would have gotten 10 points higher at the very least too. He only got 6 pts from that botched 4S2T+COMBO while he could have garnered 17 points from it. So if they both were clean he would still win by an even bigger gap.
Agreed about how they handed the GOE though, I can see about 3 judges giving him way too much GOE. But this applied to Javi and Boyang too. I wrote up about it few pages back. Weirdly, Nathan Chen was not actually prepped up at all here at worlds. Though expected because of the heavily european/asian panel

I was only talking about the LP, not both combined, regarding Shoma placing only 5 points lower/ahead for some judges.
Yes, Javi also got major inflation IMO, but I don't see how Boyang was gifted in GOE? Nathan also was plenty prepped up, he got way over 40 & 80 despite falls (and his components not deserving to be that high even if his clean IMO) :slink:

Ah I see what you mean.

About Jin, UK and UKR judge gave Boyang 90 and 94.5 and CHN judge too gave him 90. But SPN judge gave him 76 or something and few other judges hold him down too (don't remember the exact number, but I did write up about it) that's why it balances out eventually in the end. I am talking about PCS not GOE haha. His GOE is fine imo, but what I meant is both Javi and Boyang received candies too here in a sense
Nathan, Patrick and Yuzuru actually have the less gap from lowest to highest when it comes to PCS, so most judges are actually agreeing about their level of components.
But Boyang got 18 points gap and Shoma also got around 10 pts gap (speaking of LP only here).

Ah okay, yes Boyangs PCS spread is weird. But it annoys me less because while 3 judges overscored him, some are still IMO way too harsh with him. So yes, for him it balances out overall. That isn't true for Shoma & Javi IMO, who end up receiving a lot more candies.
But I'll stop the complaining about the overall scores in this thread, I'm sorry I'm dragging on and on about this ^^" but I have to admit the scoring is putting a major damper on my excitement after those performances. I'm actually really worried for that the judges are going to do at WTT... :slink:

No worries I wrote a long-as* post about the scoring too pages back
About WTT, well, that just means he has to skate well, doesn't he? I don't know why I still has this belief that the judges (overall) won't hold it against him if he delivers. So I am not panicking (for now) and just leave it to Yuzu to show what he is capable of. For what it's worth, he is always up there, at the top for the past like what 4-5 years(?), no matter how many times a portion of people trying to write him off.

I actually think it is good (in a sense) for Yuzu that he won with a close gap. That means he would really double-down and bring it up a notch next season.
