Technically speaking "the more variety" thing will have to hold even if he ends up adding the 4Lz because Nathan with the 4Lo will still be above him in that number.

Yuzuru's brain is a wonderful thing.

I don't know, I wouldn't rule out Nathan. Still, I trust in Orser and the rest of the team, that they'll choose the best strategy for the Oly year.

Oh, I'm not discounting Nathan at all. His BV will always be scary and enough to make up a lot of PCS differences.

I wouldn't either and I don't think Yuzu is underestimating anybody. I don't think Nate's 6 quad attempt went unnoticed. Better boots and a consistent season next season and it's totally game on.

I think the 6 quads are bringing good points, but a program like H&L even with 4 quads are beating the 6. Imagine if Yuzu has programs more difficult than H&L for next season with 4 quads but adds some combos to them or maybe a 5th quad, even if he moves another quad to the second half of the program, clean skate and he's unbeatable!

Do remember Nathan fell on two of those 6 quads and ended up not repeating the 4Lz he had planned. What happens if he lands them all? That'll be answered next season... I'm not sure there's anyone who can be unbeatable anymore, not the way things are going in this sport.

Dropping by to welcome back Meoima, and share in the post-season celebration!

About Kurt's commentary, I think he generally highlights yuzuru's technique, whereas he'll talk about shoma's performance more. Which is expected since Yuzuru's programs are not to Kurt's taste unless it's rockstar (or choreographed by Kurt).
Personally I'm interested in technique and learning more about it and Kurt's mentioned some interesting things before.

He really liked Chopin, though, didn't he?

If he lands everything his PCS will also increase. Much like what we saw this season. Things just came back to reality at worlds because he didn't skate that well. But points wise, he wasn't far off from a podium place and even with those falls he was 4th in the free. And if we're in for a messy night at the Olympics I think it's going to come down to base value.

I finally cought up with this thread :hap85:.. l feel like l deserve a medal or something.

For next year's layout I am totally trusting Yuzuru's judgment. He has shown us time and time again how good he is at reading the scene and planning ahead and I don't think next season will be any different. If he thinks that the 4Luz is not necessary then he is probably right.

I will pray for his health and that he will deliver a performance he is proud of at the Olympics (even if it is not a winning performance)

And if we're in for a messy night at the Olympics I think it's going to come down to base value.

I think Yuzuru's desire is to avoid 'a messy night', hence all the talk about raising the average this season and maximizing his GOEs and of course if possible, PCS if he's skating clean (ish).
It's a fine line actually and if he's still thinking about the 4Lz and other additions (probably combinations), I think he is thinking from that angle. How to raise 'the average' and thus have the best shot in case he isn't 'in the zone', as he calls it, and at the same time, how far should he reach into the add more difficulty theory, while still making sure that 'average' is always there at hand.
I think the answer is to keep a four quad program, with the 4Lz added because it keeps the layout of this season and yet raises the BV (especially if he changes the quad combination) and also leaves room for other possible adjustments, ie he can throw in yet another quad if push comes to shove but we'll see what he comes up with. One thing I'd be willing to bet is that there is no way he has actually already discarded the idea of the 4Lz in his program.

He had been aware of the youngsters coming up when nobody else paid them much attention. I doubt he's not aware of the danger now, when they're breathing down his neck.

I feel like I'll never catch up with it :sad4:
At the moment I am on the page 4266 and it's 4th of April.. So 364 pages in 20 days, how is it even possible?!

I typed out the CBC comments from Dasani T's video. Yep, Kurt is gushing. I think there is more than one female commentator, but it's difficult for me to tell who was speaking so I put them together as "F".

[Intro of contenders and summary of Team Japan Worlds placements]

K: Yeah, they’re teammates here. But come on, Shoma wants to beat this guy. He got his world title back, and he’s a dynasty, he’s a business now. He’s such a superstar in Japan that when he skates at home, I think clocks stop.

F: Well, how much security do you think he needs when he’s at home?

[cut in video]

F: And here he comes…

K: The man.

F: The myth, the legend…

K: Yup.

F: Yuzuru Hanyu,

K: [Interrupts] Oh, I thought you were talking about Pooh Bear.

F: Oh. No, he puts him aside. Oh!

K: Famous, famous Pooh Bear. This, this is the pressure that this skater is living under. You can hear the applause before he even leaves the boards.

F: I mean, that’s the kind of applause you hear at a soccer match.

K: It’s true.

F: But it is for him, the 2014 Olympic Champion and the 2017 World Champion, regaining his title that he won in 2014. He also captured his fourth straight Grand Prix Final title. I mean, he is a man who has been top of the podium many times. Missed Nationals though, he actually had the flu, and that’s where Shoma Uno gained his first title.

K: I had the pleasure of doing an exhibition program, creating an exhibition program for him. He moves across the ice so easily, but when you’re on the ice with him, that’s when you see his genius. Quad loop. That was his answer to Shoma Uno when Shoma came and did the quadruple flip, when Nathan Chen started doing the quad lutz, he came back and said I’ve got a new quad I’m gonna put out there too.

K: Failure to launch quad sal. You could see all that power, not able to rotate.

K: You can see the ticker in the corner, chalking up the score for the technical elements. That would have been ten points higher if he would’ve turned that jump.

F: And we know athletes never like excuses, but, at the end of a very busy season, how are you feeling when you’re competing at the World Team Trophy?

K: You know what, if you’re him, and Shoma, you’re in Japan, you’re very highly motivated. Look at the crowd. You know why they’re there? To see him. And uh, and it is a chance to just do what you love at the highest level. My theory is that when you’re doing four, or five quads in the long, how long can you maintain that level of skating? So you’ve gotta enjoy it while it’s working for you.

K: Another quad offering. There we go! Houston, we have a launch. Quad sal, triple toe. Clean landing.

K: [Laughing at YOLO combo] Oh.

F: Saved that one!

K: Snappy little recovery with the spread eagle.

F: [Laughing] He meant to do that.

K: [Snorts] Not that way, but yes.

F: And as you pointed out that technical score box is surpassing the current leader which is the “L” and the “C” is for current skater. You can see where his marks are.

K: Very Wayne Gretzky-y. [Legendary hockey player]

K: Late in the program, thought he’d try a spread eagle into a triple axel and wasn’t able to get it. I don’t think it’s gonna hurt him too much, but Shoma Uno, who’s a teammate today, might like to take advantage of this opportunity to beat the world champion in the long program. So the door is open a little bit for Shoma, but doing his job for the team.

F: Yuzuru Hanyu, Olympic and World Champion, sitting seventh after the short. He popped a couple jumps there, but did his best here in the free to earn a lot of points for his team, and the fans are showing their appreciation.

K: Yuzu, as well as being a skate god, is also asthmatic, so these long programs, when they get to the end he is tired. [Replay begins] Four revolutions. He has deciphered the chemistry that goes into the takeoff, the rotation and the landing. The timing of his quads, the angle of ascent and across the ice, allowing for perfect landings. So smooth. His four revolutions truly looks—[YOLO combo replay] not quite that one, but looks like three. His upper body is unhindered when he lands. He’s creative when he makes mistakes. And he also holds the ice like a real rock star.

F: [Agrees] Mhmm.

K: Tracy Wilson, from the Cricket Club. Brian Orser’s on vacation, so she steps in as coach.

F: And there’s the Winnie the Pooh bear. [Yuzu takes off pink bow] Doesn’t like those ears. And making up some ground here in the free skate. 200.49 will put him in the lead. Alright, your job is done for the season Yuzuru. Now you have time to focus on next year. But what a skate by the world champion. [more Pooh talk]

Aww, that's nice to hear, thank you. And honestly that's about as much as Kurt can gush short of getting onto the ice and proposing to Yuzuru lol

Ahh all these discussions about layouts are making my head spin- it's a good thing that Yuzuru likes maths and science because I can only imagine the numerous factors he and TCC have to think about.

Also super late (I've been trying to catch up on a couple hundred pages) but thank you everyone for updates about WTT, videos, translations and pictures. I haven't been able to watch any of WTT live because I was on holiday in Athens that lasted exactly the length of WTT funnily enough.

One last wish from WTT from me: does anyone have Team Japan's reaction to Yuzuru's LP (I remember reading about some people watching that app that broadcasted the K&C)? I've seen his reaction to several other TJ members that have been uploaded onto YouTube, but no reactions to his.

I'm curious too. We've seen some reactions to his SP but not sure I've seen any to his FS.

Nathan is a wild card because he has to deliver his quads and hopefully stay in one piece. Adding the loop may bother his hip, and he had to leave out lutzes at WTT to favor his ankles. I hope taking risks doesn't end badly for him. He was the first person I thought of in the debate about Patrick Chan's quad injury comments. I agree Yuzu is capable of beating even a 6 quad layout, but I'll leave it to him to figure out exactly how. Who knows, Nathan may want to focus more on the second mark, so we don't really know what his programs will look like either.

I agree. They know better. I'm sure they'll all make wise choices so no one gets injured.
