Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I think there is no use of being worried at all, everything is in his hands, he is just 22 -so no age issue This age is considered as a peaking years for male skater,he is progressing and isn't stagnant like Chan circa 2011-2014. He is monitoring and evaluating juniors very well, studying them and planning accordingly. We witnessed this well this season, when he put lo and 4 quads , some considered this as a madness, also we know he has a quad lutz somewhere on shelf in case....So comparing him to Chan is really laughable and not adequate I think.

As a reminder I am going to look through his career a bit. Following him for 7 years gave me these memories: in 2010 everyone thought Gachinski would be his main rival, when he managed to get bronze at WC 2011, then Han Yan happened, He won JWC 2012 , had some great skates and made GPF too, many people thought Han Yan and Yuzuru rivalry will last for ages. Later it was Chan from "evil" Canadian fed who was beating him all the time and he had to up his tes and put quad sal in order to beat him, then it was D10 who had Korean roots "apparently" was politicking and was considered to be main threat for Yuzu's gold medal in 2018, then it was Javi with judges and Spanish fed behind, oh, yeah I have forgotten in 2015 it was Nam who was raising star of that "evil" Canadian fed and trained with Orser,he even beat Yuzu's tes in Shanghai. So many got worried. in 2015 Boyang followed, who emerged with huge tes and people were thinking he would get pcs boost in a year or two, then there is Shoma who is JSF rising star and "evi"l JSF is willing to " throw" Yuzuru away and keep shoma as n1. ... now it is Chen who has the most powerful usa fed behind and zoueva who will politick for him, as she is best in this.... at the end Hanyu Yuzuru doesn't care about them, I mean he cares and he is prepared, his analytical mind is astonishing.He is evolving and improving all the time. All Yuzuru needs is to stay healthy and deliver when it matters. Of course sport is not pure and pristine clean but at the end delivering your best always counts.
There is 1 year left and by next GPF I am already predicting Jun Hwan Cha added to above-mentioned list, host power you know
It is a pretty long time before OG game can change several times, so I prefer to worry/freak out about WC and 4cc yet )

Nathan is definitely no doubt to be considered as a threat but it's too soon to assume he will surpass Yuzu.
I'm not even worried about OG yet. Let's wait and see what will happen at 4CC and Worlds 2017!

I think i already said this but i don't feel like Nathan can get the World's title from Yuzu. I don't think that i'm jinxing it either, is just that while his score might be there, i don't feel like they're yet on the same level. And yes, i'm not worried too much because of the content of his programs, but for the nationality. That combined with the content i think it's the real threat, that they will try to push him as the champion. It does make me feel a bit calmer what you guys said about Yuna, i would LOVE if Yuzu got the gold medal at PC but if he doesn't then yeah, i think he will still be a legend. I don't want him to be remembered as the king without a crown though. I want him to shine as brightly as he can.

In Japan, famous athletes including Olympic medalists are mostly the last child of the family.

Professional baseball players: 49%
Football players of World Cup members: 70%
Olympic medalists: 63%

The said reasons are;

when they have older brother or sister who are doing the same sport,
the last child usually,

1. Starts the sport earlier.
2. Practices at higher level from the beginning.

You are all correct that rivals have always appeared before. Personally I most enjoyed the years Yuzu was battling it out with Javi, Ten and Machida because they were well-rounded skaters. I don't tend to go for young technicians like Jin and Chen. Baby Yuzuru was different for me because he had passion, intensity, beautiful spins, the Ina Bauer...

Is there really an incentive for Chen to add transitions if his PCS will go up automatically? He won't want to lose consistency on his jumps. I think his strategy will rely on jumps and clever packaging by Marina Zoueva. Rafael Arutunian is not known for working with his students on spins or complex choreography. Those two coaches are not used to working with each other as a team, unlike Brian's team at the Cricket Club.

And chances are high that we'll see that happen in a few months! 4CC is coming so we're going to see where he is in a couple of weeks and we'll have a much better picture, and more importantly, he'll have a much better picture. Another good thing about 4CC is who he is going up against there. Then there's still plenty of time to fiddle with what he's not happy with until Helsinki.

He's still very much the favorite, with good reason. We should be realistic about the opponents but also about his own strength, and that's immense :agree2:

Wow, I didn't expect my random idea would get a new poster Welcome! I don't have the data myself but I've seen some users on GS have data collected from scoring per judge so this might be interesting to run it through some regression analyses? I saw skatedb doesn't break down by judge AFAIK or that could be a resource.
Unfortunately if I ever get around to this might take a looong time, sigh.

Well he already has a world title (but the sound of reigning Olympic champion is music to my ears already). It'll be great if he'll be World champion again though for me, I really want him to win it all (win 4CC please and of course another Oly )

Well, if you're interested in Yuzu's competitions only, it wouldn't take much. Protocols from previous seasons won't have the judges' names revealed, they will stay anonymous, so it would only be a matter of SC, NHK and GPF. You can find them in the results' sites (the one I linked is only for NHK, for example), and you will find the judges' names and their corresponding number in the protocols in the "panel of judges" column

I've been going through YouTube re-watching Hanyu's skates listening to different commentators (really like the esp ita people, enjoy listening to them properly going through PCS, wish more of their videos were translated), however I found a couple of Swedish untranslated broadcasts (Worlds2012 FS and Worlds2014 SP and FS) - would anyone be interested if I translated them?
