As if he's Kurt Browning's son? LOL!! I guess because of his freedom of movement and showmanship ability? So many younger people won't even understand the comparison, even if they've seen Kurt on Youtube.

Don't ask me what it means - I'm just as baffled. And find it hilarious. :laugh2:
But that's what was said - I convey all the details of the commentaries with all sort of absurdities like Yuzu being Kurt Browning's son (I'm sure Kurt would be proud!) or Yuzu taking off his skates in a blizzard and standing outside barefoot. :) That's the best and worst of Russian language commentaries for you.

And you do a wonderful job of delivering those commentaries!! I bet commentators sometimes think to themselves afterwards, did I really just say THAT? And it's recorded for all time, LOL!

This makes me want to learn russian, the commentaries sound so dramatic... just my taste!

Hmmm, this drama does get sometimes excessive. :)

OK, a somewhat subdued commentary now - I think I'll be done for today. Well, maybe. This is very short.

Still the one and only, great and unique, a samurai with a baby face. Two years in a row he skated before Fernandez and lost the title to Javier. But the fact he’s unique has been proven by him more than once this season. Requiem… no, not to Dreams, but of Heaven and Earth
(after the skate)
Hanyu raises the audience up on their feet even at gala shows. Well, he deserved it. Just look, how much sweat he sheds – quite literally, when he’s all pouring sweat after each program, both SP and FS. Today he looks a bit less exhausted (literally, ‘looks more like a human) after his gala exhibition program. Well, that’s the way major titles are won in the sport.

Thank you for everyone who has been so kind in translating. :thank:Really appreciate it and it is always nice to see what commentators said about Yuzuru, either good or bad ;)

There is one thing that caught my attention though from the recently translated commentaries I read (which is somewhat a bit baffling). Several commented about his solo 4T in SP and saying things like "Well,he doesn't have 4-3, "only" a solo quad", as if they played it out like it is the less difficult/simpler thing to do. Though I agree doing 4-3 in general is harder than doing a solo quad, I would say it is not like that in SP. Not many men can do quad out of steps (which is the requirement for solo jump in SP), which is why they HAVE to do a 4-3 if they want to include a quad in the SP and just do steps out of their triple for a solo jump (usually 3Lz/3F). So this kind of reaction is a bit weird(?) to me

Lmao right, I also raised my eyebrows at that. I am sure the version I heard was he actually ran out WITH his skates on and not barefoot
But I am guessing it is just a slip of tongue (?) or not? Haha Not sure

Thanks for the translation. I find Samurai with a baby face part so agreeable. :D

OK, I'll answer both of those questions as this attempt to put down Hanyu because he chose not to jump 4-3 prior 2015 in his short program comes from Russian commentators. There was an obsession with jumps in Russian male skating - as you will see, Russian commentators hardly ever pay attention to such trifles as transitions or steps into single jumps or even skating skills, so there was a belief that the ones who could jump a 4-3 combination deserve higher scores. In fact, Yuzuru was for years called a weakling because he didn't jump 4-3 at the start of his SP and chose to jump 3-3 in the second half. He and Brian Orser got the nickname of 'accountants' for that in some fora.

Second - no, as for that drama of Hanyu standing with his feet bare in the snow - that was a classic example of Russian dramatising events and creating mythology. It's not enough to be involved in a major natural disaster and run out with your skates on - 16 year-old Hanyu has to be a hero and think of his skates first.

Ah I see... :agree2:
I am aware of how the Russian was when it comes to jumps (Yagudin was actually the first skater I watch and the one that got me into watching skating), but that comment was coming from TAT so it is kind of weird at first ? Yagudin actually had some pretty nice transition into his jumps and during his era he was lauded as the more complete skater compared to plushy because of this. So I guess I am bit surprised about that comment.

But I heard this from North American/english-speaking commentators too before (it was also during Sochi), so I just can't help but :noshake:

Sometimes when I read trans of Russian commentaries I don't know if they are misinformed or just have a slip of tongue haha. I remembered that time when someone (was it TAT?) said Javi was married or have a Russian girlfriend or something and I was like --> did I miss something?

Also for the bolded part. I hope they are aware that doing 3-3 and 3A in second half + a solo quad out of steps are arguably much harder than doing 4-3 + a triple out of steps. I'd like to think they are genuinely aware of this and just saying that because they can't really say that Hanyu is doing harder stuff than Plushy/Chan out loud, maybe

TAT was being defensive about Plush - she knew he'd lose to Yuzu. I think she felt obliged to say that - though it would have been better if she hadn't and had just acknowledged that on that day the youngster was better than the veteran.

She can be terribly biased (in thinking SB are the best dancing pair ever) and she can be confused and she can mess up facts (Javi being married to a Russian girls caused no end of hilarity in Russian social networks - everyone was like 'Does Miki know about this?'), but she's so emotional that she's liked. Less liked, I'd say, lately - because things get confused all the time, so I know some people started avoiding watching her commentaries if they can. So if you want to find some fascinating stories which never happened - listen to Russian commentaries, they just weave them into quite good commentating!

Answering the addition - well, I know that, and they know the rules, but since they disadvantaged Russian skaters with 4-3, then the rules were wrong. There were literally some posters in fsonline last year that Yuzuru chose to jump his combos in the second half of his FS because he literally must find it easier to jump just then and not in the first half (so some sarcastic soul asked whether he should get -10 percent discount for his jumps for jumping them in the second half then!). According to one obstinate Chan lover, Yuzuru did nothing special in his Seimei, so he never deserved such scores... etc etc etc.

Green sour grapes, you know!

Oh, by the way, there were people who claimed that his spread eagles out of quads disguise his ugly short exits from his jumps. :)

I see, that's understandable actually. :) Anyway, I love TAT! Not just for her dramatic+emotional commentary and reaction, but I also think she is a legendary coach and choreographer. Considering her age and how taxing commenting for hours and hours could be, I would say I am forgiving when it comes to her if she stated some facts wrongly or had a slip of tongue. But other commentators (european or north american), maybe I won't be as forgiving lol. If I recalled correctly, Robin cousins commented for BBC during Sochi and after Yuzuru's LP he was like "Oh, he only received level 1 on choreo sequence" and I was like "Huh???".

Too bad I don't speak Russian and can't understand 99% of what they said.

Robin Cousins' commentary was great, in fact - but that made me chuckle. Yeah, right, somehow no one gets more than Level 1 for the choreo sequence...

Lol okay maybe this would have been true (and I would buy it a bit) if he has not had the prettiest running edge out of his jumps and much improved extensions than his younger years. I meant, things that he did are arguably harder and he actually could do the simpler ones. Logically speaking, I would have not used those as an argument against him. ;)

Right? His commentary is actually great but these kind of things are just my tiny pet peeves, I guess. :laugh2:

I understand a bit because he was not a CoP skater + he does not regularly commentate, so maybe the constantly changing rules confuse him. But in general, I would expect anyone paid as a commentator to at least read up the rulebook/guidebook and actually knows stuff well :slink:

anything can be used as an argument against someone if you dislike them. That's the sad fact, unfortunately.

:disapp:

As for TAT, I also respect her a lot because of her past as a coach and choreographer, and I find most of her commentating very entertaining.
I'm sure she felt obligated to defend Plush in Sochi, because of the situation - Olympics in Russia, he was the only Russian man skater there - but it would have been nicer if she had stayed more neutral, because it was obvious that Plush wouldn't have chance against Yuzuru (or Patrick as well). I feel she is often very biased. I really disliked how she bashed Yuna in Sochi, because of the obvious reasons :scowl:

she can be horribly biased and she's sometimes just impossible. I wish most of the time she would retire and we could get more level-headed commentating - it's not as if we lack good ex-skaters or coaches or experts who are capable of doing that.
I'd love a neutral and considerate way of commentating, really. British uncles can mess up very badly too - but the fact they're benevolent and forgiving towards anyone is so refreshing after the verbal warfare of our commentating. I for one am rather tired of the endless drama, sorry!

Russian esp can get quite hilarious as well when commentators argue with each other

I am laughing very hard when tat praises Yuzu's spins she has to mention Yags spins too because OF COURSE and then keeps saying Yags had leg over the head spin which was great, I am like... I was huge Yags uber but can't remember such thing and honestly his spins .....:)))

Also a bunch of them don't really do their quads out of step now... or their steps are far before the actual jump. And they don't really get docked for that. So that rule almost seems irrelevant.
