^IA. Actually, this conversation makes me a bit sad, because Yuzuru has said/implied that he felt lonely in Toronto before, and this further confirms it. Does he not have Japanese-speaking friends in the area, or other skaters training at TCC who speak Japanese? Or would he prefer to be alone anyway? Him saying he feels lonely makes me cry actual tears ;___; I wish I could speak Japanese so I can emotionally support him, lol (but I'm sure he has other people who can do that, just not around him all the time).

I think the problem is many people don't get what the word introvert means. It doesn't necessarily means you are weird around people or are shy, only some of the introvert are like that. It mainly means that you like to replenish your energy by being alone, not by being with other people which extroverts do.

At SP, usually the top 12 skaters (those who receive special support from JFS and those who have got good result in eastern and western Japanese championships) will skate in group 4 and 5, and the rest of the guys will be in group 1 to 3. Those who compete in GPS are the former, so Yuzuru will be in G4 or G5. And these two groups will probably be broadcasted live or slightly delayed, according to precedent years.
At FS, top 6 of the SP will skate in the last group, but guessing from the broadcasting schedule it won’t be aired live, and they will probably cover only the last two groups (with a few skaters from the first three groups who skated superbly, maybe.) after broadcasting Ladies’ SP.

He is studying human informatics and cognitive sciences, which he believes can help in his own skating. At least according to Wikipedia.

Yeah he is, although I feel like the informatics/cognitive sciences -> skating link is kind of weak, like I'm sure that's not the ONLY reason he chose such a major. He said he's interested in psych, stats, and math which are pretty technical subjects, most athletes end up majoring in something like sports education (like Yuna) or something else related to sport, or humanities. I looked at his school's website for his major and it looks like no joke lol. But it would definitely be nice if it would help his skating!

Too bad i didn't catch everything he said in the program where he was with Shoma and Oda, when they asked what they would be doing in the future. He did said that probably not skating, later in life, but i didn't understand what he said u.u

Edit: I feel like i am not expressing myself correctly, like yeah, no one wants their life to revolve around just one thing, and i wasn't trying to say "He should go out like a normal person!!!!" or anything, especially coming from me since i am struggling with both things right now. I feel like it sounded a bit rude and that wasn't my intention at all, maybe it has nothing to do with it but i was listening to a japanese music show while i've been replying to this thread while paying attention to my environment in case anyone talked to me which caused a bit of a language jam, so maybe my choice of words wasn't ideal... Ah, I don't think introvert necessarily equals to being silent, socially awkward or uncommunicative though. I am an introvert too but I am doing just fine in social events and making friends. It is just that introverts are actually people who prefers and/or are comfortable of being alone, it does not necessarily mean they are not really good with interacting with people

I am very much an introvert but if you saw me in an english speaking environment you would never guess, because i talk a lot and with anyone He might get pretty overwhelmed by all the attention so it's completely understandable that he needs alone time.

Which reminds me of something else that was on the podcast, japanese fans trying to get into the Cricket Club Poor Yuzu. I loved how safe TCC sounds for the skaters, "If you want to have a meltdown, you can do it, no one will tweet about it, no one will upload it. If you want to have a clean runthrough, you can do it, just with us here and we will cheer for you"

Edit: thanks guys! I was really worried about coming across as unrespectful or rude, considering how much i love him i don't want any misunderstandings! It's been a mentally tiring week because it's posada season (which precisely means lots of going out and socializing, especially with coworkers i have nothing in common with, ugh) and my language skills except my native language are suffering , is like i can't find the right words to express myself...

Yeah, exactly, I'm not that bad being a teacher and meeting scores of new students every term. It's just that sometimes I have to be alone - have that personal space.
And Yuzu's had a long experience of dealing with public communication - ever since he was a child, basically.

Yeah I think, like Yuna (who also seems naturally shy), both of them have really opened up the last few years. Introversion is very normal, and he probably is introverted (probably 50% of people are), but it doesn't mean he can't be social, have friends, be very comfortable in front of the camera, etc.

To add to what you said earlier, i don't think he feels that lonely. He does have friends, and last time he mentioned his friends as a source of support (i know he looked at Pooh but he must have been talking about human friends too )
It must be frustrating not to have someone to speak your own language besides your mom when you aren't as skilled in the foreign language of the place where you're living though...

I will be there! I have my tickets for men's short program and long program. I have 2 additional tickets too that I am looking to sell (one for the short and one for the long). I haven't bought tickets for the other events but I want to play it by ear. I'll maybe attend pairs and ice dance shorts and then then ladies long. I'm still deciding.

In Japan, at present, his fame makes it difficult for him to have normal life out of skate. In Toronto, on the other hand he can focus on training but he can’t be with his family and close friends. And he has a purpose to be there and there are people who support him to be there for the purpose. I think I kind of understand why he is being so stoic. But after retirement, things will change a lot and maybe we will see more extroverted side of him…or not. I don’t know But I think we are just witnessing very small, special part of his life now.

I kind of don't want to know anything else about his life because i fear this crush might turn into an unmanageable one i want to admire him from afar as Yuzuru Hanyu the skater with the little bits we know about him outside skating.
The part about having a normal life is also one of the reasons why i think he should try going out in Toronto, although from a cultural standpoint it might be difficult and stressing for him, he can be a normal person in Canada when he's not skating, something he can't have in Japan. I loved watching the clips of NHK Trophy when he was with Ryuju and Keiji because of that, he looked so happy♥
I remember that part of the Shizuka show! Yes, he did say that skating was like his "fuel", right?

I enjoyed the Brian podcast. What I like is that he acknowledges his mistakes, when others are right, what he could have done better etc.. He was not afraid to admit that Yuzu was right about trying the 4Loop all the time, was not afraid to admit he could've helped Javi more at the Olympics etc., is quite comfortable in shining the light on his other coaches etc.. By expanding on the info that he and Yuzu had to have a meeting about things before SC shows that as well. I think he is doing the best that he can with the knowledge that he has at that time. How many other coaches have successfully had 2 top skaters train together without a relationship breakdown at some point? Very few, if any. I think it's a constant stress for him, and they are learning as they go.

He also answered a question I had wondered about: where skaters lived when training abroad. I know some stay in the homes of skating families (IIRC, Takeshi Honda stayed in the basement of a rink family... I remember him showing where he lived in Barrie), I knew Javi had an apartment, but I wondered what Yuzu and his mom did considering how often they went back and forth to Japan. Now we know it's a condo. It is just a little thing I wondered about.

I am sure he does go out a little bit in Toronto, particularly in summer when training isn't as intense... and if not, he should. You don't have to have incredible language skills to just go for walks, to the park, to the mall, to the zoo, to the museum, ride the subway, take the ferry to the island...and there are many Japanese restaurants. It could be done in total anonymity, which he will never have in Japan.

I initially thought he was not really an introvert too to be honest, partially due to how chatty, loud and outgoing he is (machine-gun talk lol). But since Yuzuru himself said in Jounetsu Tairiku that he needs to block his surroundings to deliver and that he actually wants to be left lonely, I think he is likely one. Of course people might change as they grow older or once they are in a different environment, however since i don't see that being introverted is a negative thing, I think as long as he is happy I will be fine with it.

I think an introvert can be chatty and loud in certain situations. I am an introvert, but because my work life demands I be outgoing and chatty, I have learned to be that way when necessary and I have even come to enjoy it and people never guess that I am an introvert. However, this requires much effort mentally and i have to recharge my batteries by being alone, reading, walking or other solitary pursuits. Perhaps it is the same way for others.

I agree with liv, an introvert can definitely be chatty in certain situations, especially when it's expected of them or when they are feeling relaxed. Personally, I am an introvert who loves interacting with people. I have days when I can socialize easily but I get so drained by it after a while that I have to lock myself away and just spend some time alone. I usually need a few days to recharge completely.

As Brian said, Yuzu seems to be a very private person and with his lifestyle, perhaps he is desperate for whatever privacy he can get. I think he should spend his free time however he likes, I'm sure he knows best.
