I think the main problem between him and bo is the culture difference. By reading their interviews I can tell a lot, it's just how different japanese and canadian are. Sometimes it's not really because yuzu is "introverted" or whatever. And just saying by "asian standard", he is not introverted, definitely not. He might seems introverted to western culture (especially north americans), but that's really just how asian people are...

Yeah I think, like Yuna (who also seems naturally shy), both of them have really opened up the last few years. Introversion is very normal, and he probably is introverted (probably 50% of people are), but it doesn't mean he can't be social, have friends, be very comfortable in front of the camera, etc.

All this talk of introversion has been very interesting :) I think, given the evidence, that he probably is an introvert but that's probably hugely underlying his type of performance. The type that draws you into their world, a lot like Yuna (who got me back into watching skating again).

I always thought it's so interesting his choice of field of study. Anyway he's always seemed so strong in metacognition to me. Since so much of the high performance aspect of sports is mental, he can probably apply a lot of it. I wonder if he'd ever go into research? (but there's the olympics first :slink:)

To add to what you said earlier, i don't think he feels that lonely. He does have friends, and last time he mentioned his friends as a source of support (i know he looked at Pooh but he must have been talking about human friends too  )
It must be frustrating not to have someone to speak your own language besides your mom when you aren't as skilled in the foreign language of the place where you're living though...

I wonder if he wasn't living with his mom (which at 22 would seem reasonable) he would reach out more to others he knows at the rink such as Javi, or maybe would make friends outside of the rink. His English seems to be good enough to communicate with a non-Japanese speaker and being in Toronto he wouldn't be hounded by media if he went to a restaurant or movie with friends. It makes me sad to think that as a young man he trains, studies and that's it. :sad46:

Yes, Brian Orser said he and his mom were living in a condo. What I meant was I think if he wasn't living with his mom he might have more motivation to make friends and have a social life in Toronto.

Probably. What worries me is that even if you are an introvert, you do need someone your age more or less available to rely on. I hope he thinks of Javi :(
The fact that his university studies are online IS a big factor too, i am thinking about the oda-yuzu-shoma show again: both Yuzu and shoma haven't been thinking about love, while oda said that at their age he was thanks to his university acquaintances. He is missing out that part, being with people your age even if you don't like being around people, but i really wish from the bottom of my heart that it doesn't affect him much and even if it does, i will have to believe that he is smart enough to work around that 😁

I'm sure Yuzu talks to other people closer to his age (either through Line or some other way), but he probably doesn't go out and do much aside from skating and school while he's in Toronto. I don't see a problem with this, he clearly enjoys interacting with other skaters and people when he does meet them outside of Toronto (like Keiji and Ryuju at NHK Trophy, he seemed to have a lot of fun there).

I think for Yuzu, skating is his passion and his job, that's why he's in Toronto. I may hang out and talk with my coworkers while I'm at work, but I may not necessarily hang out or spend time with them outside of work on a personal or social level outside of that setting. I don't think that's abnormal, nor would the opposite be unusual either. It just depends on what type of person you are (although I'd be very curious where Javi would take Yuzu if he took him out haha).

On the somewhat off-topic of being an introvert, an introvert can be very chatty and outgoing with people they are familiar with in small group settings. Introvert doesn't automatically mean shy or quiet. Either way, I'm not entirely convinced Yuzu is an introvert anyway as he seems to be the type to feed off a crowd when he skates at least.

On another topic, I've added different English Subs for Yuzu's Notte Stellata exhibition from NHK Trophy. Special thanks to Lys for looking over the Italian to English translation! I don't think English can fully capture the nuance of the song in Italian, but I think that this translation is less literal than the one found online. I did end up doing three different versions of the same exhibition video though (they all have different merits, and quality of video!).

I wonder how much freedom Yuzuru has even in Toronto, if his fans are constantly showing up at the Cricket Club and he needs a security detail. I have no idea if he's lonely or not. I wouldn't necessarily assume he doesn't have a satisfying personal life, just because Brian and his team don't go into detail. Respecting his privacy is a precious gift they can give him.

Delurking to also comment about the introvert/extrovert conversation. It's not about how loud or sociable you are but how you get your energy and recharge. For introverts, imagine starting your day with a bag of coins and as you go about the day interacting with people, you lose coins until it becomes empty. While extroverts start with an empty bag and collect coins as you interact with people. I've known quite a few extroverts who seem very quiet and mellow and come off as introvert initially but they love interacting with people and are always are going out and meeting people because it energizes them. The opposite is also true with the loud, sociable introverts. There's a lot of nuances. If you break down the introversion/extroversion using the MBTI, there's 5 subcategories in each so it's not uncommon to be 4 in one area and 1 in the other, which would explain why not everyone falls neatly into the definition of introvert/extrovert. In the end, it only matters how each person identifies themself as.

Also wanted to add- thanks to everyone for all the translations, links, photos, etc. I really appreciate it and enjoy reading this thread and the positivity in it compared to the competition ones. Used to watch figure skating growing up but eventually forgot about it until Yuzuru brought me back into it.

Off-topic sorry...

...isn't this head roll in earlier event practice (cannot recall whether i saw it at AC or SC) was when the song goes "let's get crazy"? I didn't see this head roll anymore in competition....this to me kinda the "Semei's forward/backward crossrolls" moment of the Crazy SP :luv17:

One more thing about being an introvert. I'm an introvert and, let's say "socially awkward" (i have a mild form of social anxiety) and since i was a child, i was alone by myself. People annoy me, it's tiring when i'm around people. That's why i like being alone most of the time. I just don't have the energy (and nerves) for social things, i mostly talk only to people i know ( bc i don't trust people in general).

But Yuzuru seems to like people, to talk with them even if there is a language barrier. I think he knows a lot of people at TCC, he probably just often has homesickness :confused2:

I think the problem is many people don't get what the word introvert means. It doesn't necessarily means you are weird around people or are shy, only some of the introvert are like that. It mainly means that you like to replenish your energy by being alone, not by being with other people which extroverts do.

Actual definition of the word introvert : a shy, reticent person. a person predominantly concerned with their own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things.

Being shy is a predominant definition of about 99% of the introverts. That is litteraly what defines an intovert. If introverts are shy, it's because they are so concentrated on their own thoughts and feelings that it's agressive and troublesome for them to have to think about other people (even more so when it comes to having to think about other people's feelings).

Replenishing your energy with or without people is absolutely not part of the proper definition (it is only a symptom, brought on by the actual definition).
I know plenty of extroverted people who love nothing more than to replenish their energy by being alone for some time (so they can then go and enjoy being around people once again).

(bold is mine)

Except that, since forever, that's always been exactly what it takes to make elite athletes?

I mean...

I feel that recenty we're having a lot of people who don't realise the amount of work that goes into making all these athletes so we can enjoy ourselves for a few minutes during their programs.

If they don't do other stuff, it's not necessarily because they don't want to, it's because, if they want to get to that level, they don't have a choice. They have to work the whole day, every single day (Sundays often do not exist for elite athletes), for over 20 years of their lives.

That's what makes these people exceptional.

You don't get a Yuzu with three hours of training per week. You don't get a Phelps by swimming a couple of hours during the week.

You get people like them because their whole life revolves around their sport. They breath it, they eat it, they bath in it. It consumes their lives, quite litteraly.

To think otherwise is fooling yourself and insulting their dedication.

Stop pitying him, start appreciating the sacrifice instead.
