Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

Is it just me or the Asian fans seems to prefer Yuzuru's Hope and Legacy? While the Western + NA fans seem to prefer Let's go crazy?
I hope we will have a survey for this. :biggrin:

For once, it's good to be living in the coutry which is both Europe and Asia. I love both.
Music for the FP might not be quite westerners' cup of tea.

Hope and Legacy in a way reminds me of Requiem, they seem to be of a similar style/vibe?
I loved Requiem to death but I remember two commentators (CBC maybe? Or..?) with split opinions on it.

That said, LGC feels more complete at the moment. Haven't seen HL at its best yet, and HL is so quiet and subtle that it has less of a leeway for imperfection?

Chinese fans and other fans in Asian in general are fawning over Hope and Legacy. I have noticed many comments and shared posts on facebook. I guess it has to do with culture as well. But I agree, if he somehow manages to skate clean Hope and Legacy, most people will aprreciate it more.

Anyway, it's better to lose with a great performance than to win with a bad one. In that case it doesn't even matter if he wins gold or not. The most important thing is, he can be happy with his performance. No more "kuyashii"

But that's my worry: He is taking asthma meds, everyone can make a "doping case" out of it and people are easy to manipulate :disapp:
That debacle with Denis Ten was already enough, some just can't wait to get the opportunity to throw dirt and some are already trying it on tumblr and twitter :disapp:

Thats exactly how I feel about it. I think that when he finally performs it in the way that he imagined it, it has the potential to reach many more people.
Personally, I love it already but I think that it can (and will) become breathtaking when he perfects it.

Right. Me too. It's Ghibli-forest-spirit beautiful! But he can't as well flop at some point and share a laugh with the audience with that piece, which he pulled off really well in LGC.

Somehow, when I showed my sister, the softness and expressiveness in Hope and Legacy (and Swan) (and Requiem) (grrrr) was what weirded her out - said he had an airier style than most female skaters. :unsure: Maybe I should have only showed Seimei and Parisienne Walkway and LGC. :palmf:

I do think more people will appreciate H&L if he skates it clean.
Having said that, I don't think it'll ever be a great many people's cup of tea. I'm sure most will still appreciate the skill and one cannot deny the artistry but the music is more of an Asian sensibility so it's probably resonating more with those who are already east-ward inclined in their tastes. I am not surprised that in Asia it is getting a great response.

Another thing with H&L is that it's not a music that 'carries' the skate. Seimei is for example, it has very defined beats and the music itself draws you in almost instantly. This was also the case with R&J. H&L on the other hand is more inward turned and almost everything is on Yuzuru's shoulders as a skater instead of 'sharing it' with the music. It's another reason why once clean it'll probably sit well with a great many more people but it's also probably the most difficult thing to achieve.

I've been thinking since that Kobayashi-san Olympics post and this is certainly an angle to think about when choosing Olympics year FS music. Warhorses are that for a reason and while I'd stay away from the obvious ones, something that has a more 'obvious' pull, like Seimei and R&J, would be my choice simply to make matters easier for Yuzuru himself.

She is not wrong really. He is ethereal, in some moment it is almost unreal and he has always been a mix of both, the masculine and feminine, a perfect amalgam of both.

I suppose coming from a man it is strange for her but you did well, opening her world to more experiences is only a good thing. Yuzuru is not easy to put in a box and that almost always when first encountered causes a strange feeling for some. But new experiences are good!

Yes, I guess there are certain expectations - especially in the Western cultures - about what a guy should be like, the way they should move and act. But that's exactly what I (and probably most Hanyu fans) love about him. He doesn't fit into any little boxes, he's just who he is and isn't afraid to show it. I think that's his true beauty.
Swan and Requiem are my favourites precisely because of the softness, the vulnerabilty that he's showing. That mixed with his incredible strength really makes him unique in my eyes.

fans prefer both but the FS has a greater appeal to the general public. Everything related to FS get a lot of reposts.

Good point about Hope and Legacy being a program that relies heavily on Yuzu himself as a skater. I was trying to figure out why Seimei had greater general appeal but Requiem and HL was more split, even though all three had that Asian sensibility. What you said was probably why.
 
I like HnL music, but do not love it... but I love the skating. I love softer skating so for me it being a softer, more ethereal type skate is not an issue. I love diversity between programs. But I agree that it is more like Requiem (talking music not the skating), which I did not like very much. I like Asian music in general, so i kept asking myself what bothered me because I liked the melody, the theme, and finally came up with the use and sound of the piano. I love piano music, but for some reason I dislike its use here. I cannot explain it any better or in any other way that makes sense. All that being said, when skated to its potential, I know I will love HnL just as much as Seimei.... or maybe even more because it is a more thoughtful and mature program.
 
If people like H&L or not, i don't think it has something to do with "cultural" things. People love to watch japanese anime even when they are not asians, and Hisaishi's music really is not that hard to understand :unsure:
The problem is, Yuzuru didn't skate it good enough yet. His lack of stamina, missed jumps ect. is not helping, this has nothing to do with "asian music".
