The ice is steep. But we know what he is capable of and it's better to have faith :hap10:

It's like my brain is divided into halves - the rational side tell me to have faith; the irrational Yuzuru uber side of me just never stop worrying for the tiniest bit. :palmf:

Apparently Yuzu wrote a note to Kazuki Tomono after The Ice in 2012 when he was still a novice.

(Kazuki kun: Thanks for taking care of me during The Ice Osaka. I look forward to meeting as rivals at a competition some day! (laugh). Kazuki, ganba~ From Hanyu Yuzuru)

I really love this about him.

Always sincere. I have a thing with handwritten cards/stuff - it really shows that someone is willing to, at least, take the effort.

He's precious.

See? I am innocent!

Speaking about H&L, i love it, but i do think it's a cultural thing: I can't put my finger on it, but the music is very VERY japanese (not asian, japanese), and most people i know are confused about japanese music.
I am used to it, and probably that's one of the reasons i like it so much. The same with Requiem, i heard it the first time and i was "whoa, this is soooo japanese..." and that kind of music fits him like a glove.
I think it also depends on the sensibility of the person watching it, when i watch H&L, i feel like i'm being carried on an emotional journey by him, i can lose myself in the music and his skating but then again, i'm a very sensitive person.

I see nothing japanese on this music, it's just a music like every other music :confused2: Seimei was much more japanese, but people liked it.
If the problem were cultural, then EVERYONE would feel the same- but this is not the case.
I'm sure many people didn't like R&J2 and POTO, so is this a cultural thing too? :rolleye:

Is not about the instruments, music made by japanese composers has a distinct quality that i couldn't really tell you what it is, but sounds and "feels" different than western music. Seimei had a very marked japanese feel, so people knew what to expect. H&L probably threw them off.
And not everyone would feel the same because some people are more accepting and open to experiment things from other cultures without letting their own cultural "values" interfere with the experience.
I don't think that those two programs are the same as this one, H&L doesn't have a "story" you can follow, so you don't know what to expect, compared to R&J and POTO, people see the name of the program and already have a preconception of what it is.

Here's an excerpt of my translation of Shae-Lynn interview
When listening to this song by Joe Hisaishi, how do you interpret the song?
Shae: I think that it is a beautiful song, with emotions unique to Japanese culture. While it is classical, its Japanese characteristics shine.

As Shae-Lynn has put it, ”Emotions". Emotion is very personal so I understand how different people may see it differently - Japanese or not, let alone the word "Japanese" itself also embodies an extremely wide interpretation. I do find that H&L is very "Japanese" - although the characteristics are not exclusive to "Japanese" music - it's more tranquil and quiet and less dramatic. Ultimately, its the vibe that the music gives off.

I think that the cultural issue does impact on the aesthetics of the audience partially. For example, Koreans and Chinese love plain ballad, while upbeat music is prevailing on Billboard. (Sidenote: Japan has a wide diversity of music taste but its traditional music is indeed soft and quiet) SEIMEI is a lot fiercer while HL is soft and quiet with barely any climax, I can totally see how some audiences that prefer SEIMEI may find HL too plain or soft. On the other hand, those who adore traditional Japanese culture may be more used to quiet and reflective music and performance.

That's just one factor. And in this thread, we do see how mainstream culture never represent everyone (Even as a Chinese, I hate ballad:laugh:), not everyone feels the same under the same cultural background.

Hello
I am of asian origin who live in Nord America all my life. I love Yuzuru, so the music he chooses to skate is good for me, but I prefer music from the West, like classical musics or movies music, for example POTO, Romeo & Juliet, or rock music like his exhibition numbers, Hello I love you, The Swan...

Japanese music is too soft and quiet for my taste.
But I love to see Yuzuru skate, so I accept what music he chooses.

Japanese instrumentals sound different than western ones to me. The "composition" feels a bit different, dramatic or not. In Seimei it also was clear, at least to me, that he was interpreting a character, and it was more "engaging" than H&L, it demands your complete attention. H&L, i think that it's a program you have to watch without any preconceptions to appreciate it and let yourself be taken by him.

I'm asian and I dislike soft and quiet (love) songs. :p

You may try ONE OK ROCK (because Yuzu loves this band! so do I :D ). While traditional japanese music is soft and quiet, a lot of the best-selling music are POP, ROCK, R&B and electro etc.

I am no expert in composition, your point sounds valid to me - perhaps that's why I feel that the music is Japanese despite being classical.

I do not think that the fact that he is "interpreting a character" affects that much though. In fact, in H&L, he's interpreting himself. And to an audience with completely no prior knowledge of the background of his songs, he/she wouldn't even know what is the "preconceptions" of the performance. Yuzuru transforms and delivers the interpretation through his performance with the help of the music. I'd say the nature of the music is what impacts on the audience most as it determines the theme of the performance.

God, i can never say which one is my favourite performance from Yuzuru. He delivers each genre of music so well therefore ultimately it really boils down to personal preference... I'll wait till I see a more matured H&L, just as how his SP amazes me in GPF. He has the ability to make a song like you don't appreciate to grow on you. Yuzu power! (fangirl mode: on)

I've seen the mixed comments about H&L so I'll add my sentiments. It's true that I don't love it like R&J 1, Parisiene Walkways, Chopin, Seimei... Yet. I think this program needs to grow and to be more polished, in addition, skating clean would definietly help.

The thing is that in 2013-2015 he used only warhorses and the only program that I partly remember is POTO (the irony...). I didn't feel true connection to music as with R&J 1.

And because of that Seimei was so brilliant, because the music was unique and he was familiar with it. And that's why H&L despite its imperfections beats every FS of his during 2013-2015 period for me. He has a deep connection to the music, it is actually telling his own story and mainly, it is very unique so that's why I like it.

And most importantly: it's godamm Yuzuru! And I love nearly every thing he does!

I prefer LGC because I think it's a more complete program, maybe if he skated H&L clean I could appreciate more because I totally love the music and the choreography. I used to find H&L quite empty at the beginning but he's been adding more details here and there so I hope by the end of the season we can see the true potential of this program.

Yes, LGC seems like it is finished and ready to go. He is already performing it very well and there are only small things to work on. It is so close to being exactly what it looks like it was planned to be.

H/L needs to be clean. Because it is understated, the performance has to carry it and little mistakes reduce its impact. It is already so much better than the first outing at ACI with far more choreographic bits but it is, understandably, not as good as it could, and will, be. It just needs more time, a little more tweaking and Yuzu probably needs that hard, hard work period, right before Worlds, for him to peak physically as well. Just no more flu! or colds...

When you say something is a "cultural thing", this means a whole culture. If you think it's not about the whole culture then don't use the Word "cultural" because it's not correct. Every person is different, you can't just put them into groups. Some people like something and others don't, that's it :confused2:

An interesting poll in weibo (may also reflect cultural differences), we should totally do one here too!

YZR48—Vote on the most popular costumes

(YZR48 is a mock of the Japanese girlgroup AKB48)
Due to the limitation of weibo, the initiator selected 20 costumes, with at most 6 votes per account.
Number of voters: 2509
Number of votes received: 10727

RESULTS OF THE POLL

1. SEIMEI 1588 (14.5%)
2. Chopin 1.0 1119 (10.4%)
3. Notte Stellata 1110 (10.3%)

4. POTO (Red ver. at 2014 CoC) 870 (8.1%)
5. Hope & Legacy 851 (7.9%)
6. Hana ni Nare (花になれ) 803 (7.5%)
7. Parisienne Walkways (Blue ver.) 749 (7.0%)

8-17 R&J 1.0 (2012), Chopin 2.0, 2012 Nice SP, R&J 2.0 (OGM), POTO (blue ver.), Requiem, Let's Go crazy (White ver.), Let's go crazy (Purple ver.), The Final Time Traveller, White Legend

18. PW (Black ver.)
19. Vertigo :palmf:
20. Notre-Dame de Paris

Note: R&J 1.0 and Requiem have always been popular among Chinese fans but the TOP 7 have been widely spreaded to the greater public recently.
