Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I'm still thinking about that 4s-1lo-4S. There must be some story behind it why he is actively practicing it. Maybe he has some idea on tweaks in his LP layout now

The thing I remember best from watching the practice session at GPF Barcelona, was the way some of these guys (if not all of them, I admit I was mostly watching Yuzu) just keep on trying to up one anither, all the time.

Like, Boyang would jump his 4Lz in a corner? You could be sure than in the next 30 seconds, in that same corner, at least two of them (nearly always including Yuzu) would jump one of their best jump/combo.
It felt like there were moments of quietness, but then, BAM quad contest!

And the gala practice are the same, often worse because there is no coach to stop them. "Here, let me show you how I could have a combo worth 300 points on its own", that's basically the message Yuzu is sending when he does these things. "I am the best, you cannot beat me". It's competitive spirit at its highest..

Doesn't necessarily mean he'll ever put these combos in his actual programs ;).

Yuzu's hydroblade apparently started around the time of baby Vertigo ^^ https://youtu.be/dFeOhU99bec?t=1m28s

And now we have the shiny-pants 2015 version https://youtu.be/1WN4UNO-6Ow?t=2m4s

This was a while ago, but Nam playing with Seimei hydroblade at TCC https://www.instagram.com/p/-zeHSPIKeE/?taken-by=namnamnoodle&hl=en and Javi helpfully pointing out (in the comments) that the direction is in reverse XD XD I love Cha, make no mistake about that, but I do miss the old Cricket Brothers formation.

You're looking for last year's NHK pre-gala segment, right?
The full segment (up to Brown & Chen) in low quality though: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7RQU6CjNvCXRXRaRWlGT29DX1E
Hope this helps.

Time to update my list of Yuzuru!Homages.

Sharing from YHIFG FB. A skater training at TCC posted this message today on her weibo account
Translation by Tan Ke Xin @YHIFG FB:

"Until now, I'm still remembering about the truth that Yuzuru greeted me first today. He was dragging his suitcase, preparing for his training while I'm getting off the ice rink. He wore a mask, singing while walking, and greeted me "morning!" when he saw me. Then, we settled down and changed our shoes together....but I still dare not to talk to him. How could Yuzuru be this friendly, polite and down to earth?! Although I can't skate together with the World Ice Skating Champion, but we can change our shoes together...."

There's a second post after the first one :D

Although he had an intense aura around him as he passed by me today, when he fell in practice he switched to cute mode and refused to get up. So he was just sprawled there, face down but kicking his legs up like a teenage girl... After a bit he propped himself back up with a big laugh, and wiped the bits of ice off from his face. Brian was laughing at him and said that was "face landing"

I guess the talk of 4Lz is spreading.

Next step? Quadruple lutz!
The question is:
This Season or Next?
Work in progress

I'm sick as a dog with a major headache so am leery of mistranslating but...

From his sources, he says Yuzuru did a 4S-1Lo-4S in one of his run throughs. After 4 minutes and the choreographic sequence. Of course they don't think this is something for competition but still. They think it should be a subject of a medical study

Nothing truly new about the 4Lz I'd say, apart from maybe that it's not in the 'good percentages', over 60% then I think they're going by what Brian said and it won't be this season. But please, grain of salt, am doped up on meds.

COMMENTARY TRANSLATIONS

Yuzuru's Short Program Worlds2016 with Swedish commentary (it is not perfect but should be close enough )

http://dai.ly/x44g8a8?start=1536

Official commentator: Ladies and gentlemen Yuzuru Hanyu (though she pronounces it Hannu :P)

Lotta Falkenbäck (former figure skater) - There he is, the great Japanese (champion)! 25-year old, no sorry, 21-year old Yuzuru Hanyu. Olympic Champion, World Champion 2014, silver medallist last year after Fernandez. He took the world by storm when he arrived in 2012. He jumps so you… He looks like a light (weight) butterfly that floats across the ice, as if nothing is difficult.
Chopin has composed the music

Filip Stiller (former figure skater) - Now he actually has the opportunity to take a proper lead over his competitors, if he nails his elements now. Quad salchow!
Now we shall se if he will also nail the jump combination… Quad toe-triple toe! Fantastic!

LF - As if it was nothing (easy)

FS - And look, we can see that he is already almost at 31 points technically, after (only) two elements.

From nowhere… he executes a triple axel!

LF - OJ oj oj (oj = wow), what a (fit) cap (Swedish expression, similar to ’fits like a glove’ => amazing execution)

FS - Observe him now, playing out his whole register/catalogue in the step sequence

End of program
LS - Everyone is standing up! Every single person, even we are! Because of this achievement/performance by Yuzuru Hanyu from Japan! Oj oj oj oj oj oj oj oj (oj =wow) What a performance he has shown us!

FS - Yes, you can only take your hat off (for him). He dominates the others completely in this competition. He doesn’t just do two quadruples and a triple axel, he does two perfect quadruples, triple and (a) triple axel, and in-between everything is just without fault, and simply simply simply perfect – it is not possible to do better (= execute it better)

LF - We can see Fernandez score, this is almost 10 points ahead… of Fernandez technical (score)

FS - Yes, I think that he is going to break the world record again, and he has already done it twice and both times we (all) said that now, now he will never be able to do it again.
This is so… to be allowed to experience something this great is so big (= it’s such an honour to be here and experience this/see this)!

LF – Yes, this is the most insanely perfect (performance) I’ve ever seen.

Brian Orser, he is of course over the moon too, Hanyu of course is as well, what a discharge (of energy) this is!

FS – And the way he skates in-between the different elements. He starts with just a couple of strokes and he is already at top speed, and his movements to this music it is so sensitive! Everything. He’s got such a sensibility for the music… and up in a quad salchow, four rotations in the air, with BV of 10.5 and he got +3 (GOE) the maximum

LF - Nice spread eagle in the landing and then directly into a deliverance/landing (step?)

FS – (Talking about quad sal) Awarded by the judges with +3 (GOE) for perfect quality

LF - And there we have the combination quad-toe triple-toe

FS – He was strong there, a bit on his way out (of the circle) but managed to salvage the jump and land properly. This is almost the best of everything, triple axel from a counterturn and with a great landing and back into the choreography and magic immediately (again)

LF – It is such a fantastic completeness/whole when he skates

FS – And here he has also shown that he could handle the pressure, his opponents didn’t, great lead for the free skate

LF - He is also so timid! That is the thing as well, he is like… like a happy (carefree) youth, 21-year old but at the same time…*she laughs, seeing Yuzuru yell in the re-play* Great to see him let out some steam/energy/attitude. And look now when he thanks the audience, he is so humble! He is thanking his coach. He is so Japanese. He’s personal best is 110.95.
Oh come on now… 110.56! He didn’t beat it, but almost! Oj oj oj what a lead he takes. It is insane! Fernandez had 98.52!

FS - It is completely astonishing that he manages to perform this (program so well)! At the highest possible level with the highest possible pressure – that he manages it!

LS - And also that he is so timid/humble (= opposite of stuck-up, aggressive) and thanks everyone and is so humble! He has such a fantastic charisma in all his humbleness/simplicity…Yes, now we can breathe again because now Hanyu has skated…

Translator’s notes: Timid is not a perfect translation (there isn’t one perfect word for it). The Swedish word vän (as an adjective) here means a combination between timid/friendly/innocent/carefree - the opposite of aggressive. Lotta means it in a mostly positive way, but she is also happy when Yuzuru yells after the sp, since she takes it as an indicator that he is aggressive in a positive competitive way (she knows he is before as well, what she muses on is the interesting contrast she believes he displays – seeming so timid in behaviour while at the same time being so “on” competitively).

^^

They did so many shots for so many different purposes in that one day

And of course a "true era of quads" CM skips the lutz king himself :sarcasm:

Hmm, if Nathan medals at Worlds, he'll probably go to Skate America. He'll probably go even if he doesn't, but if he does medal and Yuzu does too, Yuzu is not going to Skate America. So I'll probably pass on SA.

I think that sounds fair. Which is a pity, because it's so close to NYC TwT TwT I want to see Yuzu live at least once while he's still competing!

I myself don't remember to be honest, but I was told that last year we could watch 4CC on the ISU channel in Europe without geoblocking, which would mean that Eurosport didn't buy any broadcasting rights back then either.

It does say that it will be in the official ISU channel (i'm glad, that stream works wonders for me haha)

Hmm, let's list ways Yuzuru Hanyu has changed your life:

1. I say 'oh my god' the way he does now like in that Sochi video when he realizes he won
2. I smile like him, like scrunching my nose and squeezing my eyes lmao. Of course I don't look half as cute, but in my mind I do
3. I bow to random things
4. I listen to music inspired by him, like PW and that japanese song in the red cross CM
5. I bought/wear underarmour clothes bc of yuzu, although I did contemplate it because they don't officially endorse him!
6. I decided to rent an apartment close to the ice rink so I can skate every day :luv17:
7. I've been wearing my kimono around randomly...hahahaha

omg you did post that here hahaha
I do say oh my god like him too hahaha, i think i've watched too many videos of him...
I sometimes smile like him too, probably because of the same reason why i said oh my god like that
The bowing... I do that too but then again i've been exposed to japanese culture since i was really little so that could be it
I no longer mind when i catch myself lip syncing to my music
I bought better headphones because he seemed so passionate about that, that i had to give it a try too (they were only 26dlls but still, the difference is immense)
I went to skate once  after telling myself that it wasnt worth it bc it had a really long line... But i HAD to try it (and i loved every second of it... i wish i could do it again)
As a dancer, i was very shy with my expression, so although my movements looked good, there was something i was lacking. So i try to work on my expression too, i am not an athlete but i can work as hard as him so i can too give a performance i can feel proud of :)
I am happier, he makes me happier, because it reminds me that even there are bad things happening around me (or in the world) there are still beautiful things and that humans do have the capacity to be as nice and pleasant as him. He is my role model in many things.

I have a ticket for Skate America for now, but I will certainly sell it if Yuzu or Shoma won't be there. Not that I don't like Nate, but not enough to go to new york if I don't already live there.

I catch myself trying to time my day-offs to Yuzu competitions...

Hmm, let's list ways Yuzuru Hanyu has changed your life:

Random twitter finds...

There's a Brian Orser x Reader QA campaign on Twitter for his book that just came out (#AskTeamBrian or #ブライアンコーチに聞こう). Someone asked what it was like this time with DW choreographing Notte Stellata for Yuzu, it's been a long time since they'd last collaborated

https://twitter.com/yuzu_matsubarko/status/827098157007790081
Newspaper cutting from around Sochi period. Yuzuru's juniors at Ice Rink Sendai recounted how one day he arrived early for practice and started running. Just as they were wondering why, Yuzuru started picking up trash around the rink side. He was surprised, but since then everyone just started to follow suit :)

Screenshot of Japanese juniors training camp XD Machida, Mura........ and all the way at the back, baby Yuzu :D

When I feel frustrated, I repeat his words "プレッシャー大好き, 崖っぷち大好き" over and over. Try to get myself infected with his athletic spirit.
