:o: at that collective "awwww". Its so cute how his voice goes up by a few octave's when he's speaking english. At first I was like.. "who said that?" :p

One more selfie w/ Song Linshu (Chinese ID) during 4CC.

Lovely Lovely edges. :luv17:

Yuzu is just too precious
I also noticed that his voice is higher when speaking English and lower when speaking Japanese (it's interesting)
Thanks for sharing the videos and photos!
The edges photo is wonderful :agree:

Also speaking of costumes (continuing from the discussion of previous commenters), I really really love Yuzu's costumes ... like, they're just SO beautiful with all the soft fabrics and flowy colors and shiny bits ... his costumes for Hope & Legacy and Notte Stellata are some of my favorite skating costumes ever (his Seimei one is great too).

The beautiful costumes + the beautiful music he skates to (I really wanna see a clean skate version of Hope & Legacy because it's such a beautiful program and so fluid with the beautiful music, costume, and of course Yuzu's beautiful movements) just makes watching his beautiful skating even more awesome... I absolutely LOVE his SP, FS, and EX programs previous season but I think this season's programs are some of his best yet...

Welcome and post often!

Thank you for the warm welcome!
Yuzu's awesome skating has inspired me to stop lurking and join in with the fans here ;)

I absolutely can't wait to see him perform in Worlds because it seems he's found something within himself during the 4CC FS ... like he modified the choreography half way through and successfully made all those jumps and sequences work (and I LOVE that yolo axel at the end - this precious prince never fails to surprise) ... I'm looking forward to him skating the Hope & Legacy program cleanly in Worlds and dazzling us all again with his beautiful skating :luv17:

Wow, I hope some people would really move on from NHK/GPF and Seimei. That was the skate of his life and if every single time he skates from now on, it is going to be compared to that, I kind of feel sorry for him. Patrick did not skate the way he skated at TEB '13 every time, or Javi at last year's worlds, or Yagudin at 2002 oly and worlds.

It is as if now people (including his own fans) see him as a lesser skater or a lesser Yuzuru just because he doesn't skate like that. If he doesn't interpret his program the way he interpret Seimei, doesn't mean he lose steam or become less of a skater than how he actually was. What he did there at NHK/GPF was a gem, perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime skate. It is NOT the new normal of how he will skate. We may see it again, we may not. One thing is for sure here, it has passed and he did not look back to that.

He matures, so does his skating. He will never be the same skater that went all out, wild and frantic, like he did at R&J1. If that means he is more controlled and calculated, then maybe that is what he is now. It is not like it is a bad thing. I actually appreciate that now he did not rush his program as much and took his time. I enjoyed his skate much more now than how he skate in his younger days. It is a matter of taste of course, but some speak as if he regressed or something.

These kind of things just keep reminding me that the expectation on him is just in a much enormous scale than what they put on other skaters. :slink:

I find that it's very common for voices to be a little higher when speaking a second or third language, particularly if the person is not particularly comfortable with the language for a few reasons; nerves, an attempt to sound clearer, and in some cases I honestly think that speaking with a somewhat cuter voice is used as a effort to hide a lack of confidence in the language (because the listener will be more forgiving if you are being cute - I do this a lot in Korean, my co-workers find it really funny).
Also, I don't really know Japanese but it seems to have a similar thing to Korean where there is not a lot of intonation or stress on particular syllables in words, which can make English pronunciation really difficult because we have intonation and stresses all over the place, this can often make voices sound higher when switching from Japanese/Korean to English. I know a guy that speaks Chinese natively, korean as a second and English as a very shakey third and his voice changes in each language

Yuzu's english seems to be improving and he seems to be getting more confident which is great :luv17:

IA, it's pretty unfair to expect him to skate like his Seimei GPF performance all the time. I feel like his programmes this season, and his performances of them, show growth, not regression. All the skill and talent that lead to his perfect performances for Seimei is still there, but no one can perform perfectly all the time. He's still moving forward, still challenging himself, and has had a wonkey season with recovering from injury and getting sick... I would love to see Hope & Legacy performed clean and to it's potential, and believe he can do it , but even if he does, it will never be Seimei 2.0, it would be it's own thing, it's own special moment.
The pressure he must be under from pm everyone having such massive expections of him must be huge. That he can cope with it is testiment to his strength.

Instead of saying he regressed, in fact it's the opposite, he's always trying to improve! He refused to stay at the same level and is now pushing even further ahead, with a new quad in both his SP & FS, and now also 4 quads (2 in second half) in his long program. The fact that he was happy even with a 2nd place finish at 4CC, proves that he cares more about achieving personal improvements (4 clean quads & 2 triple Axels in FS) than anything else! Another reason why we all love him and why he is so exciting so watch.

My favourite part is 1:04, music transitions on point. I believe his goal is to express the shortcomings of widespread communication in this millenium, a concept that us mere mortals cannot easily comprehend. Iconic.

I love this program. I remember myself being awaken by the ringtone while watching Autumn Classic International feeling drowsy because I had not slept a bit for checking all the news about how Yuzu was in official practice and wondering what would he wear for his Prince SP…Actually I had been using this ringtone as my morning alarm for a few years. Thank you for reminding me of the happy morning of welcoming his comeback in white pants after the long absence…

How can anyone call this not an improvement https://mobile.twitter.com/pink_giraffe33/status/834175449144057856
He was faster and stronger at 4CC. Look at how he ended his program! His 3A at the end was even bigger than his previous 3A in 3A3T! Watch the fancam!
The Yuzuru Hanyu at 4CC who landed 4 quads and 2 triple axel was noticeably stronger with better stamina than ever! I have no doubt he is just reaching his prime. Even Yuzuru's Seimei last year wasn't as powerful. Yuzuru will be at his top form in 2018. I have no doubt.

It's crazy to think that he's gone from routinely flopping onto the ice at the end of programmes and barely being able to get through the end, to being able to throw huge 3As at the very end of a programme just because  Seimei was a huge achievement but I think it's rediculous to think it's all downhill from there.

From your mouth to the Gods of FS ears! :clapper:

Hold your breath because I think if things will be going right at Worlds he will do those 5 quads in fp instead of one axel

I hold the unpopular opinion that beautiful skating is made of everything including spins, steps, transitions, interpretation, and emotion, on top of jumps. I honestly don't like the way a lot of FS programs these days are focused on jumps, jumps and more jumps, while neglecting everything else that makes up figure skating. I know this is the general trend but personally I like well-rounded programs that has a bit of everything.

Sure, the jumps (quads) are extremely difficult and anyone who can do multiple quads in one program deserves all the kudos for the wonderful technical achievement.

However, what I love about Yuzu's skating is that not only can he do those quads/jumps, he makes them seamless within his program choreography. His jumps look like they come from nowhere and he meshes them with the complex entries and transitions. I love watching his layback Ina Bauer and hydroblading. His spread eagle in and out of beautiful triple axels (the awesome speed and height of those jumps!) are just amazing.

His Seimei performance was very powerful and awesome (it ain't the world record for nothing) and is one of my favorites from him, but contrary to other opinions out there, I think this season Yuzu's gotten even better in his skating.

His spins have gotten faster (compare his Let's Go Crazy to his previous Seimei / Ballade performances), his movements are more fluid than ever (the way he skates in Notte Stellata is nothing short of breathtaking - he skates like a graceful swan skimming the surface of a lake), he can land that quad loop with confidence in both his SP and FS, and the way he can think so quickly and calmly when things go wrong is nothing short of genius. The general speed with which he skates during the step sequences and transitions of his programs is also quite fast (I think he's one of the really fast skaters), which is another great thing.

This is why I think his 4CC FS is so noteworthy of praise, because when he popped that 4S + 3T combination, he didn't panic. Instead, he changed his choreography on the fly into more complex jumps/combinations that will make up for the lost points. This quick thinking and calmness (especially in the stress of competition) is truly a big achievement, and I doubt there are many competitive skaters who can do this. The fact that this changed choreo occurred in the 2nd half of the FS and he successfully completed all those jumps showed that his stamina has improved. The way he just flew into that yolo 3A at the end (just cuz he can) is amazing. And all this actually gave him a SB which is just spectacular.

So IMHO, I think Yuzu's evolving as a skater and a competitor. I'm more excited than ever to see him perform in Worlds and then in Winter Olympics because I think he's a true artist and genius on the ice. I admire the delicate beauty and grace of his skating. He has his own style and I feel like he's getting more comfortable with it as he matures. His hardworking and the way he ALWAYS strives to improve himself has all my respect. He keeps pushing himself even though he has world records.

I think his English is pretty decent - I can understand him just fine and his English is definitely better than my Japanese

Also I think it's very interesting what you mentioned about voice/pitch changes in different languages! I don't speak many languages myself so I don't observe this with myself, but now that you've all mentioned it, I'll see if this is a general occurrence (it seems to be with at least a few people so far!)

Absolutely agree with you

That would just be shooting himself in the foot though. Besides, he said he will keep 2 3As, so I think that scenario is the most unlikely one out of all bar maybe a random 4A try. Maybe.

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion at all, at least among figure-skating fans.
One of the problems skating has, IMO, is that it's a pretty complicated sport. The easiest thing for the general audience to latch on to, and understand, are the jumps and it's the easiest for them to get caught in the wow factor of just the jump. Then you have the media who find that easy to market; look at this number, isn't it amazing? It creates a bit of a loop and the hype grows. So we are hearing now, and will be hearing even more, talk about jumps and how awesome they are, etc. These folks are also usually very loud too.
But from those who know the sport at least a little bit, I think there're a good many people who share the preference that jumps alone are not enough, and that a complete package is necessary.

I think this year, Yuzuru's better than ever but he's skating to a music that isn't everyone's cup of tea; understandable, it happens. And it's an opaque program of a sorts. It doesn't allow for the 'fire' of R&J or Seimei, that was so outwardly apparent then, because he would be breaking the interpretation of the music. I still think the fire is there though, directed inwardly and that it fueled what we saw. 4T; 3A-3T; then at 3:30 a 4T-2T then at the very end a 3A - and everything still integrated into the program. That can't be done without will, determination and confidence. Never better stamina, he had some to spare at the end, take a look at his face.
But it's not just that, his steps are incredible, his spins are great, he's never performed as well as he has this season. For all that it is still flawed LGC, those are the best performances he's had for me.

He has matured as a skater overall.
He has a complete mastery of those blades and it's showing more and more as season progresses; we haven't seen the best yet from this man, just wait for Helsinki.

I think it's fine to want him to be clean, I hope we get it too, for both these programs are amazing and I do want him to shine the brightest he can .. and all right, because I'm absolutely sick of the whole veterans are over, Yuzuru included, make room for the new guard spiel ok  :palmf: ... but Yuzuru is evolving and that's a wonderful thing.

BTW That cheeky little smile thrown Brian's way after the 4T-2T? There's the outward expression of how he is feeling.

That would just be shooting himself in the foot though. Besides, he said he will keep 2 3As, so I think that scenarios is the most unlikely one out of all bar maybe a random 4A try. Maybe.

You have absolutely no respect for my poor nerves at all. I protest. Strongly protest  It won't be the 4A, it'll be the 4Lz :p

But yes, no five quads, there's no reason for that. Possible other changes, sure, but that's anyone's guess then.

There is no way he will ditch his 2x 3As they worth same as quads when he gets proper GOE , only way is 4 A as an opening solo jump ..
