Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

It was fun to read all the H&L appreciation posts. Although the H&L fan fest seems to be over now, would you let me add my own confession of love towards the program? Because I have been trying to put it into words for quite a while.

My favorite H&L is the one he skated at NHK trophy, partly because I was there, and partly because I think choreography-wise, that one is the closest to the original. I love Yuzu the blue flame in 4CC but most of my impressions on H&L based on NHK version.

I love this program because it contains many emotions. They are not so intense like sadness in Requiem or longing in POTO. They are more subtle but beautiful.
For example I like the very beginning of the program. After he reaches out his hand in front of him, he slides his feet on the spot, slightly looking down. It seems to me like he is trying to examine the slippery ice which is new and unknown to him.
I also like the Stsq where I can see so many expressions on his face while he is doing all the beautiful movements. Sometimes he smiles at the audience, sometimes he looks like he is after something beautiful, sometimes he faces something which makes him sad but he let go of it gently. Then after landing 3F he stops for a moment like enjoying warmth or light or pleasing wind, then starts again to attack the 4S-3T.

Seeing this program closely makes me feel like witnessing someone’s personal, emotional journey, or having a journey myself. The ending of the journey always makes me want to cry. The Chsq contains hydroblading and Ina Bauer reminds me that life is consisted of each passing moment. His hydroblading and Ina Bauer are so beautiful but so fast to catch on in this program, which makes me miss the beauty even more. The final spin with that music makes me feel like he is wrapping up everything which happened in the journey and passing it on to us.

All the difficult jumps in this program are also exciting to watch, but what struck me most when I saw them live was how he landed them softly. His landing in FP was quite different from SP. In LGC all of his jumps except 4Lo looked very sharp and crisp, but in H&L most of his jumps looked like snowflakes land on snow. It showed how much he cared to express the music with his jumps.

I know I have very subjective point of view towards this program and I understand those who think this program is rather weak, but it’s worth watching closely, at least for his fan. I wish him good luck at Worlds on presenting this beautiful program as it is, and good luck for you guys who will be there too!

I got chills reading this. I've been struggling to put in words what those initial gestures convey, i always pictured a childlike curiosity but i wasn't sure why. You might think it's subjective but so far this is the explanation that is closer to what i feel when i watch him skate to H&L. My first impression was that of a forest fairy, moving like a leaf through the wind, but when i read how it was supposed to convey his skating journey, things that i thought before "this gives me a different feeling" clicked into place.
 
I had a very rough day and stormy night so it was natural to have lots of nightmares but I don't know why all of them were about Yuzuru's performance in WC 2017. In one of them he popped his combo to 1L+2T :drama: I also saw Brian had an interview after the sp saying that watching this performance from Yuzuru was heartbreaking :sad21:

That sounds catastrophic and i'm not sure i could survive it without breaking into a sobbing mess.
Isn't it a bit early to start with the gloomy WC posts...

I'm the opposite, I keep dreaming him landing 4S combo and YOLO 4A :laugh:

Thanks for sharing this, I really appreciate your thoughts! I love that Hope & Legacy is awakening so many different emotions and sensations within us. I love how you described the differences in style of jumps between H&L and LGC. Yuzuru's jumps are one with the music, whether it be timing or 'character', and they're part of the expression for sure :)

Thank you (and everyone!) for reading a late post for the fest. :biggrin: First I thought of something lives in a forest too, mainly because of the color of his costume, but even before I saw the costume I was somehow picturing something green, so I get what you imagined, though I don’t know where this foresty thing comes from.:scratch2: Although we’ve read Yuzu and Shae-Lynn’s comments on this program, what it tries to convey is not fully explained in those comments, so I don’t know how wild my imagination is running, but at least I can say the program is not monotonous. Instead it has many points which inspire such imagination:)

The base value for jumps is only 98.2. Not even 100+ :rofl:

Also, isn't he missing a combo or they're going to cut own on a third combo too?

You're right...so it should be 11 jumps total.

4A, 4A-3T, 4Lo, 4Lz, 3F-4T (for the ++GOE multiplier),
3A-1Lo-4S, 3A

That sounds even more painful. Though it would look so much nicer if it was 3A-4T, you're right, gotta get that 3F's multiplier up. And you know he'd use a 3F instead of a 3Lz just for balance purposes!

He can do either 3F-4T and 3A-1Lo-4S or 3F-1Lo-4S and 3A-4T :devil:
 
Actually, maybe a more 'viable' layout for him:

4A, 4Lz, 4T // 4Lo 4S-1Lo-4S 3A-3T 3A-2T (or 3A-3Lo!)

Jump BV: 100.61 or 104.79
