I have heard many times that reigning world champions almost never win Olympics, but I haven't researched it, is it true?
In that sense I don't know if it will be good or bad thing to win Worlds this year...

Err... This is not true. Yuna and Evan were the reigning world champion going into Vancouver. While meryl and charlie + tatiana and maxim were the reigning world champion going into Sochi. I don't even go that far back to Turin or Salt lake city. Another example is Tara Lipinski who also was the reigning WC going into Nagano.
There isn't really a pattern that if you are a reigning WC you won't win Olympics

ETA : If you are talking solely about the men. It is more of a Canadian curse rather than reigning WC not winning olympics. Orser, Browning, Stojko and Chan are the victim of this infamous curse.
The only one who is in line is Plushenko for SLC and those times the British won Olympics. Scott Hamilton and Ondrej Nepela won their olympic as a reigning WC too.

Btw, I was curious about Yuzu's major the other day, so I browsed a lot about Waseda and found out they regularly make congratulation posts for Yuzuru everytime he gets gold in English and Japanese. What a nice gesture of them.
Apparently he takes a pure online program so he doesn't have to go back to Tokyo regularly, but his program is so scientific. No wonder he could do that fast math while planning that #YOLO3A

It just makes me adore him more.

And I also found a post-grad program fits for me, so now I'm thinking to look for scholaships to Waseda :scratch3:

Could you see which topics he's studying ? I must admit I'm very curious, because I've got the feeling he's studying subjects I know well, but I'm not entirely sure

This is why men's is so exciting/stressful because there are 6 or so skaters that could realistically take podium any mistakes can be costly. If Yuzu skates clean/mostly clean he's hard to beat but for pretty much anyone a fall, or a pop, can be the difference between getting a medal and getting nothing. Part of me wants everyone to do well but...theres no way every skater can do a clean skate in a competition. Its a question of who will make mistakes, how many and how costly will they be

I hope Yuzu just stays focused on his own goals rather than thinking about other skaters. He seems to want to skate a clean program and get some new SB/PBs, and even coming close to that goal will see him on the podium.
Javi...I think is likely to podium.
Patrick...kinda needs to put out a good skate and also kind of needs someone with a higher BV to mess up esp considering pcs is including brownie points for doing a lot of quads reguardless of program content...

About Worlds podium, my dream will always be Yuzu, Javi, Shoma or Yuzu, Shoma, Javi, I won't mind. I'm okay too if Patrick or Boyang (he's grown on me :3) replace Shoma. Yeah, I too wish this time the 'uncles' will prove they are not easy to be beaten

Btw, confession: now I'm redownloading my whole music library in FLAC because of Yuzu. I feel ashamed to listen to loosy music. Oh, this boy really affects me

I visited Waseda this January with my school's study abroad program. We did a joint collaboration with their MBA students. They offer courses in English. It was fun because I got to speak with a few students (in Japanese though) and talked about Yuzu. The first thing out of their mouths was that he's got a nice face, lol. :luv17: So I can confirm first hand that the fangirling for him is real. They knew he was a student too.

I thought of the same since i am applying for post-grad. did some research and some of the programmes were very interesting + the school's reputation is great. But living in Japan without speaking Japanese would be really hard for me. And i will need at least 2 years to get proper Japanese so I just gave up on the idea.

That's the hard part. I can speak some Japanese, certainly enough to get by, and it actually improves when I've been drinking lol. I know more Japanese than some people living there now which is what gets me. I want to move there for a few years to improve my fluency, but to live there I have to have a job. And to work there you need to know Japanese unless you're working for a multinational corporation or teaching English. It's a tough nut to crack :scratch3:. It's a vicious cycle. I can't live on a salary teaching English since I have an MBA to pay for and hopefully put to use.

Me too actually. I barely can understand Japanese. I got into Japan culture since middle school thanks to L'Arc en Ciel, but gave up to learn Japanese to focus on my study and English. But my newfound love for Yuzu urges me to learn it again.

Anyone has any recommendation on how to effectively learn Japanese by myself?

I took Japanese in college and then had a private tutor for a while. Now I self-study when I can (it's been hard with schoolwork and my job and life to deal with at the same time). But there are a number of smartphone apps to use that I've found helpful. You should try some out and see what you like.

The most effective way for me was learning grammar from websites, and vocab through anime. I started with kids anime, since it uses simple vocab only, and my method consists on watching the episode once with subtitles and then rewatch right away without them. That way you figure out words by context. That's the most important part. Language learners often try to memorize vocab words, but that's never effective because it doesn't teach them how to use it. This also leads to awkwardly-constructed sentences. In order for this method to work you have to have a decent amount of basic grammar down, though. Once you are able to understand kids' shows (for example, Pokemon), you can move on to more advanced anime, and eventually regular Japanese tv. It also helps to try to repeat phrases you hear as you're watching.

For writing, it's a lot of just writing over and over again. I must've filled entire notebooks learning my first 100 kanji or so. After a while it gets easier, so just writing it down a few times is enough to remember it. I suggest songs for practicing reading speed. This also teaches vocab. Once again, I used kids' shows. The reason for this is that they often include the lyrics with furigana, so my reading speed increased a lot.

For basic grammar, the textbook we used at school was Genki, which is one of the most common ones. It wasn't particularly helpful for me because I went into Japanese 1 already having studied a lot of it on my own, but it seems like a good intro.

I will warn that it's a challenge, though, if Japanese is sufficiently different from your native language you're not very likely to make progress unless you practice with people. If you want, though, I'd be glad to help! I'm always up for Japanese practice.

Also, watch Yuri on Ice for FS vocab. I may not have the level to talk about, say, politics, in Japanese, but I sure can say "he fell, but got enough rotations" hahaha.

Anime isn't correct Japanese, but it is good for learning pronunciation and developing the accent. I've been watching anime in Japanese since I was 14 (now 31) so I developed the accent well. When I was meeting with the Waseda students they said they could tell I was studying for a while because my accent was good. They were curious about how I developed a good one and I told them it was probably thanks to anime, lol.

I recommend mnemonics for studying Kanji. For years I didn't even bother trying to learn it, but once I finally broke down and did it I'm already at about 600 with not a lot of study. And I could probably know them all by now if I was studying as diligently as I wanted to. And it helps so much more now when I watch interviews because they put subtitles on there so that I can understand context better since the Japanese language is a homonym's paradise :hpull: . And then going there in January being able to read more things compared to my prior trips was very nice. I was able to figure out the thermostat in our hotel room when my roommate didn't have a clue. I got a cold toward the end of the trip and had to buy Japanese medicine and I was able to read the directions. I kick myself for hold out for so long.

Don't give up. 16 years might sound impressive but i wasn't constant at all, which is why my probable level is level three, which equals a year and a half of study. Watching japanese tv will help you learn a lot of the commonly used phrases, especially if you can find subbed content. Listen to the songs and read the translations, find common words and you will start to understand! My reading level is about fourth grade, so really, don't give up. It is possible to get to a good level. I decided to sign up for lessons because, also motivated by Yuzu, i've been talking to a lot of japanese on twitter, and they will never tell me i'm having mistakes, but i want to properly talk to them in their own language, and also because i want to REALLY understand our baby swan I get the big picture but he sounds so articulate that i just want to know exactly what he's saying (And i find the language extremely beautiful too!) I felt like i wasn't making much progress anymore, so i decided i needed someone to guide me

I'm not constant either (my formal lessons were 7-10 years ago), but I think having studied at all and having that exposure to it makes my brain attuned to still being able to learn it. I would recommend some of their j-dramas. I got hooked on one while I was there, lol. And I also like reading on twitter. It's short and sweet, but still good.

This is specifically for the men's discipline. For the ladies it's usually the opposite with the exception of Kwan in 2002 and Kim in 2014 (though we know how that controversy worked). For men it's remained true with the exception of Evan (who again I consider sort of an outlier since he didn't even have a quad)

I meant specifically the men. They are more susceptible to the curse than the other disciplines. It seems like those who are immune to the curse and it even benefits them are American men. So being reigning world champ helps your Olympic chances if you are American. So I guess if Nate wins worlds this year...But on top of that, it's even more rare to repeat as an Olympic champ. Even Plush couldn't do it, so I don't want to heap that expectation on Yuzu's shoulders (even though I will be there and would love to see it).
