How was Yuzuru Hanyu (ANA) able to bring his strength toward that critical moment of truth in a competition? In an interview with the Asahi Shimbun, he talked about the ultimate “state of concentration” he was in during the free skate portion of the World Championships in Helsinki, where he pulled off a massive reversal to win the competition.

"I think there is a difference between 'being forced to enter’ and 'to enter’,” Hanyu started off with such a unique way of expression. (* Hanyu differentiating between ireru, to put in, and hairu, to enter, which share the same kanji)

“There is a difference between consciously willing yourself to focus versus unconsciously doing so and retroactively realizing, ‘Oh, I was focused just now!’. I unconsciously entered that state during the World Championships. That was also the case during the free skate portion of 4CC."

At the FS where he caught up from fifth place in the SP, Hanyu had skated perfectly, including the element that he’d never successfully executed in the past five competitions. Immediately after, he mentioned “feeling as if (he) had leapt into the winds, the rivers, as part of nature. It was a very good kind of concentration… (He) felt (himself) gradually melding with nature, with each jump (he) landed." he said.

It was a state of complete absorption. It was different, too, from his sense of wanting to win, wanting to execute his elements perfectly, etc, after the perfectly-skated SP of the 2014 Sochi Olympic. At the time, he had said he’d like to “move forward with the good vibes anyhow” and to "tilt his state of mind toward that feeling." In sports, some athletes refer to this state of total concentration that results in > 100% performance as “entering the zone.”

Hanyu is working on trying to reproduce his state at the WC Free Skate, where he was “focused to the extent that he has forgotten the specifics of his performance.” “How to… turn it into something reproducible. What needs to be done to get into that state... It's difficult, but it’s something I have to think about from now on."

In paying attention to the “why’s”, Hanyu has improved in both technique and spirit. “Even when I was young, I’ve never been able to sit with things that didn’t make sense, and I was the type to hound and keep on asking ‘why’. And I still feel that way." This season too, he had shot back with “why” at Coach Orser’s proposal. "If I do not understand, or when things differ from my own sense of what they should be, I will definitely ask for an explanation." When he was a child, he’d often ask, “Why won’t you buy me a toy?” “Why can’t I play now?” “It began with those sorts of things, but that was probably how my way of thinking/ thought pattern came to be."

He is thinking that the upcoming World Team Trophy would be a good stage to try out methods of reproducing that state of concentration. “It hasn’t been long since the World Championships, and I’m still in that good mental state from the WC. Therefore, I think it’ll be a valuable opportunity." (Goto Taisuke)

Now that I think about it that would be unsightly... Maybe we should opt for butterflies. And there will be articles about Yuzuru Hanyu being an actual fairy that attracts butterflies in Spanish newspapers. :laugh:

Too glaringly conspicuous - what's that bloody butterfly doing around Yuzu all that time? Why does it keep zooming on to him?
And butterflies fly quite slowly - so you'd be swatted out of your existence by the whirlwhind called Yuzuru Hanyu.

Throwback to the day of NHK trophy presscon where he just kept talking about how many quads will be needed at the olympics until the presscon time was almost up :laugh2:

Look, why do you care so much about your looks when you're an insect? Do you think he's going to fall in love with a butterfly or a dragonfly? :biggrin:
But dragonflies are fast and VERY difficult to catch, I'll grant you that. :)
 
I think he made perfect sense in that article. You hear other athletes describing the same things... they are so "on" that they don't remember what they did, or how they were able to do it... I just hope he doesn't overthink..... and he sometimes, er quite often, does over think things. You can tell he is still on a World's high, so I expect he will do well next week at wtt, unless he overthinks!! Sometimes you have to feel, not think. So glad to hear he is enjoying himself right now. You can feel that happiness coming through his words.
