Yuzuru Hanyu: 2016-17 Season

I just finished watching the broadcast...if he continues to change the choreo each time, and skates as beautifully as he did at Fantasy on Ice, I don't mind him doing Chopin again. It was gorgeous, and different. I'm really in love with it all over again.
 
The audience seemed to like Let's go crazy even more. Idk, I still think it's not the best decision and a bit of a let down. But maybe his LP will be such a innovative thing, the SP won't matter. Let's see.

The difference between the two programs is that Let's go Crazy is for screaming at the top of your lungs watching and clapping as hard as you can, but Chopin is for holding your breath and watching in silence. JMO. I think both programs are awesome, but the response I feel when watching them is different.
Sure, I'd like to see a new SP, but this is a strategic move Yuzu is making for maximum security while also pushing his technical content forward by putting two jumps in the second half as well as doing harder content in the LP. Fans who want a step forward artistically this year will be disappointed, he did the experimentation and risky musical choices last year and concentrated on pushing his artistic and technical elements last season. He's quite calculating, and he has noted the kinds of scores he got for his artistic push and his technical push. Now, in the Olympic year, getting the Gold Medal is what his strategy is built around. Going back to a previous program that was well received by the judges and packed full of transitions, musicality and technique AND that he KNOWS he can skate clean, gives him a boost so he can concentrate on the LP which is where two-thirds of the points can be gotten. He's analyzed the scores of his nearest competitors, he says he always watches the scores and looks at the scoresheets, so he's playing the numbers game as smart as he can. A strong artistic -though not new- Short Program, with difficulty comparative to the other front-runners. -This gives the judges as much reason as possible to score him highly if he skates well.

I know it makes sense, I still don't like it. I was so impressed by Yuzuru these last two seasons, by Seimei, LGC and H&L, I finally felt connected again. I wouldn't have been disappointed if he recycled one of those. But skating a SP for the third year is a bit too much. Even if he knows it by heart, that doesn't mean he will skate it clean everytime. And then it comes down to personal taste. It's a step backwards, imho. If he's happy with it, so be it, if he wins the OGM like this it obviously worked out....but if he doesn't, it can also turn into a regretful decision, a real "should I have done this?"

It was like this at the previous olympics as well, so I was expecting it. Having a great, avant-garde program is not necessarily helpful in getting gold medals. -See what happened with Seimei, etc. If he doesn't retire, he'll branch out again with new and challenging artistic programs, he's not the kind of person to stay still. -I still expect him to bomb his first GP SP, seems like it's part of his seasonal rhythm, but how quickly and how long he can hold his peak is dependent on how at ease he is with his programs, and his health.

...or at least it will be harder for judges to underscore him ...
It looks like Yuzu is damn serious in testing Chopin 4 , while 4T is definitely back!

I know, I know. I disliked both programs he won the Olympics with. So it's just...it's wanting a real WOW moment for the Olympic Champion, and Chopin, sorry, just isn't that. But since the LP is going to be the deciding factor and that WOW moment can happen, there is still hope for me. :)

As much as I dislike his choice and I really wanted a new program, Chopin - in whatever its version - is a masterpiece ! So performed to perfection, it will have not just wow but WOW WOW WOW moment.

Each to his own.

By the way, the opening number (Before Choo Choo Train) was really good. The way they built the tension, steadily introducing the skaters and the music, Yuzuru coming in at the end...it was really powerful.
 
someone said this program was already skated to full potential

well, I don't think so, Chopin 3.0 is on new level, lovely touches and changes to choreography
