Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Wonderful interview with Brian. ❤️ I’m always fascinated by the coach/pupil relationship, especially with Yuzuru and Brian.

The minor tidbit about the tensions between Javi and Yuzuru this Olympic year was interesting too.

Thanks for posting! 😊

We did knew that there was a moment when Javi when "quiet" according to Yuzuru, and Javi has say that there has been tension...

I do appreciate their relationship, but by no means do I think their are best friends.

The fact that they survived 2 Olympics cycles with out killing each other, or hating Borser, is to be respect (See Virtue/Moir vs Davis/White)

Agreed. It’s well known that they are close at “work” i.e. while training at TCC and likely while doing shows, but don’t spend time together outside the rink. I imagine the Olympic Season did increase the competitive pressure and thus fueled at times some tense interactions. The fact that they came out of, it seems, still very friendly with each other is a testament to their characters.

Speaking personally, I don’t know if I’d have been able to share a coach with my biggest rival and remain so friendly with them.

Javi's personality helps a lot in this. As Yuzuru has said, Javi is too nice sometimes, so I think his attitude has mostly been a good foil for Yuzuru's more intense personality, who is like 'murder everyone who stands in the way of my gold medal' except only in intensity and not actual blood and pain.

I need to watch the Brian interview. I was on the train and my connection went out not much after he called Yuzu the GOAT, but I think it also helps that there is a team of them and not just Brian himself.

I do not think Yuzuru has the same personality on competition as when he trains. For me those minutes when he get on the ice in competition is like switch that turn on/ off.

I think that Yuzuru did have a more similar personality with Nam, when he was at TCC.

I don't disagree entirely but I bet there's been some 'intense' practices at TCC before.

This. I think the situation would've been impossible if not for Fernandez's extraordinarily chillax personality. Which is also why I think there's zero chance Orser would take on Nathan Chen as a pupil, despite a bunch of posters wanting it after Olympics.

Tell the Chinese fed to send Boyang instead and I’d be all for it (a girl can dream). If I think any personalities could work in the same environment it would be these two.

I do think Javi’s nature allowed for the two train together. Both benefitted from having each other there so it was at least symbiotic. I think Yuzu I is grateful that Javi didn’t oppose him coming to TCC above all, maybe that’s partly what his “too nice” comment hints at.

I haven´t seen this posted.

Someone made a translation of Yuzuru´s post Olympic interview with Matsuoka Shuzo.

This, I think Javier got a lot mostly mentally out of training with Yuzuru.

I think he found a way to handle the pressure.

Just see Euros and Worlds in 2012 before Yuzuru arrival, Javi would do a great SP, but when was time to be in the last group... he wouldn´t do as brilliant as he could...

Edit.

On a lighter note, video of Yuzuru taking care of Shoma, this thing is cute https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=55&v=10zfSK2V5Uk

This is Orser's interview in Russian and a kind Japanese fan translated a bit into Japanese. I can't read the context in Russian so I will not translate the article, but it looks very interesting. Yuzuru said to Orser "could you give me some time?" after the Olympics, and Orser understood that as Yuzuru really wanted to heal his ankle fully. Orser also said that Yuzuru was a unique skater, and if he became completely healthy again, he would still have many things to be able to achieve in skating career.

Team Orser rented out another rink for Javier to train at this season so there wouldn’t be too much tension in the Olympic season. Yuzuru credits seeing Javier’s consistent 4 sal as his inspiration for getting his own 4 sal clean regularly.

Yuzu’s attitude in Pyeongchang was amazing to watch; he crushed the competition in sheer confidence and charisma. True star quality and killer instinct just radiating from him on the ice. I’ve read/heard numerous Chinese commentaries about the Olympics on how Hanyu has a visible “air of dominance” that sets him apart. He pretty much threw down the gauntlet and was like, anyone who wants MY Olympic title is going to have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands. My brother who watched the free skate with me and has no clue who anyone is except Nathan was astonished that Yuzuru is “like a rock star.”

And then when the competition is over we get this version: https://myjunkisyuzuruhanyu.tumblr.com/post/172075772408/looks-familiar-huh-from-sweetyuzuruhanyus
