Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

I think Kobe was the best Faoi so far. Except the Artists. Anyway yuzu looked so happy, and Savchenko really feed the Hanyu fans this time.

And by the way am I the only one who loves every single costume Hanyu wore? He wears different colors and styles everytime and isn't afraid to experiment with new designs. I like his much better than other male skaters' costumes. They stand out and are memorable and unique. I'd rather see unique pieces that are feminine than boring reused costumes.

And his androgynous face compliments the costumes, so I have no complaints. I used to dislike POTO version 2 costume because it looked like a spray painted leopard but it eventually grew on me.

Anyway prepare to be shocked with the SP and FS costumes for those of you who disliked the Dory and Pink Fairy costume, because yuzu is never gonna give up his fashion tastes.

This may be the fastest I've ever painted a fan-art. The visuals are so striking for this costume, I felt like I had to paint it right away! It took about 3 hours which is not too long for me.

That is gorgeous!

So did Yuzuru! The amount of fanservice he gave (in this and apparently the other two days) is truly generous.

I think his Mom's wedding dress suffered again... Joking. But seriously- his RJ2 costume looked like it was cut from his Mom's dress and this one gives me the same vibes again. Oh, Yuzu...
Unfortunately I can't imagine this costume at international Exhibitions events. It's a just a little bit too much. Sorry. I know he's very stubborn when it comes to his designs but this one is... I can't handle those frills though I know they have to create an image of wings. I think he's a bit obsessed with the image of wings and that is what we see in his costumes again and again. I wonder if he'd ever been asked of what creature other than man he'd want to be. There's so much of a bird in him. And that slogan- Fly Yuzu. Fits.
Don't get me wrong. He's beautiful. I just can't handle the frills. I immediately imagine myself as a cat hunting a bird.
Dont worry, you are not alone in the frills dept. I personally would prefer totally no frills, ala Nathan Chen's simple black shirt and black pants.

If wings are 'in' , a shortened cape (ala Superman, Lone Ranger) looks more aesthetically pleasing.
If Japanese traditional costume with wide sleeves, I would prefer those from Noh or Kabuki style. Or modified samurai costume.

The current styles from the ice shows looks frilly but not wingy enough

I love most of them (POTO2 is up there in my favourites)... and adore the way he dresses for himself and the fans that are most important to him, his own countrymen who also love them. Western sensibilities and current notions of 'taste' be damned.

And I'd rather double the frills than those trying-too-hard-to-be-cool corporate horrors Nathan got lumbered with at the Olympics (the one thing you can never accuse Yuzu of is worrying if he's cool enough, and so he just is). None of them can please everyone...

I don't expect him to please me. Not at all. I just don't get why when I say I dislike something and joke in a most innocent way about it I get a "Parent" who comes and tries to teach me cultural appreciation and genders in here. What is wrong with disliking a costume? It's a costume!

I absolutely adore this costume. Which is great because I kinda hated Dory.

I loveee that costume and program too, that arabesque jump before spin with perfect timing , new IB curve

Good Job DW!

Oops, sorry, I was not actually talking at you, or anyone in this discussion... apologies if it sounded like I was. And I cheerfully admit, he's worn more than one thing I have winced at (to be fair, most skaters have - and to be even more fair, the shriek I gave on first sight of Doryzu could have been heard across the Tasman. And that stripy pink thing did NOT need to come back for CiONTU, in my opinion).

I also think it will probably change a bit over the next few months, like the original Seimei, the white LGC and (as I understand) the original Requiem did. But I'm not holding out for less ruffles or sparkles...

No, I was trying to explain what I think because other poster had make it sound like he had to please me when creating the costume. And that is absolutely wrong. I like most of his feminine/masculine costumes except maybe one- Notre Dame. I also really like his Seimei costume which doesn't have any feminine element as it seems to me. And he has had a lot of different costumes through the years. This one looks overloaded to me. That is what I've tried to convey. Not to you personally, that's why I did not quote your message when posting my thoughts.

I came back from work now. After watching fantastic Yuzuru, the earthquake happened and I was devastated. I don't live in Kansai area so I didn't feel anything, and saw the news on the phone when I was on the train. I am so relieved to know that all skaters are safe, but to think of Yuzuru, I don't even know what to say. It was the biggest earthquake in Osaka in its history and probably the biggest one for Yuzuru after Tohoku disaster (if he was still there). Three people passed away so far including 9 year old girl, praying for the victims and their families, and hope people will be able to back to normal life soon and also safe trip to the skaters on the rest of FaOI tour.

A poster Imov in this fan fest went to see FaOI Kobe, I hope she is ok now.

I woke up reading the news and I am keeping everyone in Japan who experienced this earthquake in my thoughts and prayers - I too thought about Yuzuru, it must have been terrifying for him especially since what he has experienced in the past.

Coming from a very sismic country where earthquakes have caused terrible disasters, I know how awful it is to experience something like this, and I can only hope that there aren't any more casualties and send all my love and thoughts to Japan

I like most of his feminine/masculine costumes except maybe one- Notre Dame.

{grin} I came across a blog post that explained - in detail - why Notre Dame was the best costume of the lot. Afraid it didn't persuade me at all. I have a soft spot for the generally unloved Romeo&Juliet 2 and LGC in purple is a guilty pleasure , but my absolute favourites are Notte Stellata, Etude, Hope & Legacy and last season's Seimei.

Oh, and the under armour. I would actually love one of his competitions this year to be to a Japanese horror soundtrack, partly because some of them are utterly awesome, but yes, partly because he could wear sparkly black...

I actually loved Notre Dame, cross and all. And RJ2 too, with all the bling, though I could have used less boobskirt. The only costumes I really can't like is the strawberry menace from his first senior season (sorry, mama Hanyu, I know you made it lovingly) and Dory, plus a few of his old, old EX costumes. I even love most of the FaOI trashy costumes, so my tastes can be quite broad.

Oh yes. My least favorite is the same Ziggo costume you are talking about.

That being said, yuzu will never be afraid to experiment with new colors of costumes. I think he intentionally tries different colors because using the same color palette is also boring.

The color palette for zu's costume are as follows:

White: POTO 2.0, Seimei, Hana wa saku, LGC 1.0, R&J 2.0

Black: POTO 1.0

Red: Ghana Chocolate Commercial, Ziggo (2010), POTO 1.0

Deep Pink: Notre Dame, silver

Light Pink: Haruyo koi, Hana ni nare

Pastel colors: Hana ni nare

Orange: Believe - Chenelle

Yellow: Wings of Words

Green: Requiem of Heaven and Earth, H&L

Blue: Hope and Legacy, Final Time Traveler, Etude, Paganini, Chopin

Purple: LGC 2.0

Light Brown: R&J 1.0

He's worn every color on the rainbow now. The only costume he hasn't done is an all black top, but seeing as how much he likes gradations and colors, it's unlikely we will ever see it.

Oh and he hasn't worn an all out silver or grey top costume. Wonder why? Shoma's winter SP top was silver & greyish and looked pretty too.

what a wonderful EX! Yuzu is so ethereal and magical but there's a shade of rawness and wildness in his movements

He did a black onsie for his Moulin Rouge program when he was a junior. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahTBC5V1iZU

Parisienne Walkways’ ice show debut was in a grey button down shirt. I still think the shirt in the first version of the competition costume looks grey but some fans who have seen it in person says it looks greenish.

Edited to add: Why no silver—Yuzu doesn’t like silver XD I can’t recall his exact words right now but when he answered a twitter question about his black blades at the CiONTU ice show he said one reason he used them was to have as little silver colour as possible XD

Separately, very sad to read about the earthquake. I have many fond memories of Osaka but thankfully the people I know are ok, and I’m relieved that all the skaters are safe. I also don’t know what to think how Yuzuru felt, given his experiences and that Kobe was the venue of his first ice show after 311. Praying for the victims and Japan, and hopefully there will be no more loss of life and safe travels for the skaters and fans for the rest of the tour. Praying also that the homes and families of the Kansai skaters like Nobu, Kaori, Mai, Rika are safe and sound.
