Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Oh my gosh guys I am having a Yuzuru withdrawal. :gaah:
I recollected more thoughts so I am going to share it again.
(whole post)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We will have Yuzu content again soon. -Though Fantasy on Ice Niigata doesn't seem to have any broadcasting, there will tons and tons of shows broadcast on the 23rd. -Including the much anticipated Ciontu behind the scenes show.

Only some females, mind you. From what I've seen most love the costume.

Ah whatever will Yuzuru do, now that "males" are going to hate it? Maybe he's crying in a corner.
Happily he couldn't give a rat's behind what homophobic and effeminophobic males think. And most fans are already quite used to their little macho selves feeling endangered by someone who isn't conforming to gender stereotypes and is just doing his thing.

I don't love all of Yuzuru's costumes by any means but he should indeed do what he likes. If someone's bothered, tough titties.

This video came right on time actually:

"Insulting Men in English vs Japanese - Cultural Perspective of Masculinity"

This popular Japanese YouTuber I follow makes some interesting points. Basically in western culture insults center around challenging someone's masculinity, but in Japan being ostracized is worse because of their collective culture. If you're a man, your masculinity just isn't questioned which is why they don't have insults like the ones he mentions (but I won't here). Things like "you're not really Japanese" are intended to hurt a lot more than the stuff westerners say.

This may be the fastest I've ever painted a fan-art. The visuals are so striking for this costume, I felt like I had to paint it right away! It took about 3 hours which is not too long for me.
http://figureskating-in-color.tumbl.../haru-yo-koi-water-painting-3-hours-sometimes

I saw this at PH and didn't know you were the artist. NICE!!!

Regarding the new exhibit: I love Love LOVE it! I like the costume especially when it's in motion and on his spins (you know how he likes to add arm movements to his spins). That super low Hydroblade, that GORGEOUS curved IB, the whole series of complicated steps leading to a 3Loop Out of Nowhere TM. There's nothing about it I don't love already and with time and more performances, it's only going to get better.

Regarding earthquakes, I live south of Yokohama. I felt several earthquakes, but it didn't set off my phone alert and it wasn't any larger than any of the other ones I've experienced in the past in Japan. I didn't realize it was a bigger one than normal until I heard the injury report. I heard all skaters are fine and I'm sure most of the skaters aren't traumatized by it.

Edit: this one I actually felt because it wasn't the middle of the night. Usually quakes that hit the news, I don't even notice them when it happens. Usually it's only when friends and family are asking me if I'm alright is when I realize there was one. I only knew this one might be a bigger one because Yuzu fans were concerned on PH.

Dont worry, you are not alone in the frills dept. I personally would prefer totally no frills, ala Nathan Chen's simple black shirt and black pants.

If wings are 'in' , a shortened cape (ala Superman, Lone Ranger) looks more aesthetically pleasing.
If Japanese traditional costume with wide sleeves, I would prefer those from Noh or Kabuki style. Or modified samurai costume.

The current styles from the ice shows looks frilly but not wingy enough

*side eyes really hard*

It's okay. It's a matter of personal taste. I have resigned myself to Nathan's exercise wear as competition outfits.

I don't think this costume is invoking wings at all. It's about the coming of spring so it most likely represent sakura blossoms. I think others have said this as well.

I think the costume is not that crazy in comparison with other costumes he has use; but it looks great in movement and I have seen various pictures and also looks nice in pictures.

Finally got a chance to watch Yuzu's new exhibition piece in full. Right now I'm a bit mixed on it.

I think it's definitely more interesting than Wings of Words and some of his other exhibitions, and Yuzu's skating is breathtaking (that sequence of steps into the 3Lo I can watch on repeat). I think there are a few things that don't entirely mesh for me, and I think it's partially linked to the song because I thought it seemed to end suddenly. This prompted me to look for the original with lyrics only to find a ton of altered versions of the song on youtube! Eventually I did find a full unedited concert version and it seems the original is around 4:40 while this program is closer to 2:40. That and I don't know if some of the choreography really matches the music that well, but this is just my opinion. I'll consider it a continual work in progress, there are several Yuzu exhibitions that I was lukewarm about when they were first debuted that I loved when performed later and I think this program may also fall into that category. The meaning behind the song is beautiful though, and I can understand why he chose it.

On the costume - I'm not a fan. I don't mind ruffles or sparkles (I sort of expect it in figure skating), and even though I don't really like pink I don't hate the color either. The costume in motion looks fine and has a nice flowing effect, but when Yuzu is still it sort of drapes awkwardly on his body for me. I think my main problem is the ruffly sleeves, they seem too long and drown out the shape of his arms and body. This is also the one drawback of my favorite costume, Seimei. I love Seimei's detailing and how regal it looked, but because it was a looser around the lower torso we weren't able to clearly see the shape of his back at times. I probably would've never noticed it but I've watched the practices in his Under Armor and really liked the curve of his back when he does the cross rolls. That type of thing isn't always visible when you add embellishments like the ones on his sleeves. If I could only change one thing I would either remove the ruffles altogether so we can see his silhouette better or not make the ruffle transparent and have it be an opaque pink to REALLY accentuate how it moves. I'd also prefer if the pink on the back wasn't vertical along the zipper line and was at the same angle as the front so it looks more continuous from front to back along his shoulder rather than looking like it connects at the neck to the spine. The front V also looks a lot like a feather to me, although I'm not sure if it's meant to be more like flowers (or maybe it's both!).

I have to correct myself. I wrote earlier that I disliked the Notre Dame costume. Nope, I particularly dislike the Zigeunerweisen costume that was created by Johnny Weir. I cringe at the most of costumes Johnny wears for the shows lately. I think my taste had changed a lot though the years. I don't appreciate theatrical costumes unless they serve the show method. To me some of Johnny's outfits are tacky and lack in good taste. And that is my opinion.
As per Yuzuru's latest costume... Perhaps it needs a bit of refining. Unfortunately though it will not be a costume and a program that I would list as my favorites. Though I know the purpose it was created for and I respect him for that.

So am I the only one who wants to see a silver or grey costume on Yuzu? Silver and dark brown is the only color he hasn't tried. Well Deep purple too.
I would also love to see some more yellow on yuzu. To me he is the perfect skater because he tries different music and colors each time so the programs all feel very unique.

The only time I felt his costume was a recycled version of his old one was H&L and Etude in D Sharp Minor. Those 2 were very similar.

And he seems to love that gold or black high waist he used on the chopin costume. The one where black or gold waist is sequenced in glitters.

Silver and dark brown is the only color he hasn't tried.
I find brown the most non flattering color when it comes to figure skating costumes. I especially don't like the dresses in brown. And now that ISU has this grey ice requirement for all major events (for better TV picture they say) I don't think brown would look better on anyone.

Honestly guys I was worried the earthquake might have been triggering for Yuzuru. But he is with a lot of people who support him. So might as well believe in them to usher him through.

Oh, so glad to hear that you're okay! From one of the safest (naturally speaking) corners of the world, I get do worried about folk...

No one has yet tried dark brown costume with lots of sequins so it might be unique and if anyone can pull it off it's yuzu. I want to see a dark angel yuzu sometime soon.

I'm hoping for tango next season because he never tried tango before so hopefully we will see a dark or red costume if he does do tango.

So I was checking Yuzu's FaOI performance on youtube and happen to find this 2014 performance. I believe he never did it again after the tour? Also what's wrong with the person at 0:36? She looks disgusted by Yuzu, the way she purposely avoid looking at him when he's so close by, and the way her facial expression goes :drama::palmf: ...I'm sure Yuzu saw it at the time:sad46: Well before I've read online about some 'fans' purposely do this at performance/competition to show their disapprove/dislike of Yuzu, including not cheering for his successful jumps, not looking at him, siting still thu the whole performance, cheering like crazy for whatever other skaters do, etc. But this is the first time I actually witness this kind of behavior.:roll5::curse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRfI_qeUuEU

So am I the only one who wants to see a silver or grey costume on Yuzu?

I loved the costume of PW in 2012-2013 season which I call the color grey

But about his costumes overall, I also have preference but basically I am in the team of "please wear whatever you want". And about "Haru you koi", my only nitpick might be that beautiful melody before the chorus part is missing in the piano version. I personally feel more hope or future in his facial expression than in Requiem and I really like it :)

There's a lot of potential in this new Ex. But I thought it was way too short when it was done.
Yuzu always changes his performance and fine-tunes his programs each time he skates them. Even with wings of words, the ending performances were noticeably different than the first. So I expect this EX to evolve also. I wonder which areas will be changed?

He performed that program in 24 hours TV once with Hiromi Go. And never mind of those kind of people, they are made of stone :dev3:

It depends a lot on the shade of that brown. The line between excellent and excrement is reeeally thin. Literally thin.

Yes, a diabolic Yuzu would be something new and really cool. Phantom went a bit in this direction, but it was not that dark and sinister as it could be. Black Butler aka Kuroshitsuji would be thrilling (just an example):
Imagine Yuzu as Sebastian Michaelis in a black suit with red eyes and some of these soundtracks :love:
The Dark Crowe Smiles
Diabolic Waltz
Si Deus Me Relinquit
Lacrimosa
Monochrome No Kiss

Edit: Yuzu's traditional bows after his programs would fit this role as a butler perfectly. I can hear him saying:
"悪魔で執事ですから" [I'm a devil and a butler, you see] :laugh2:

Why did you do that to meee?

Here is Daisuke Murakami's video and he talked about SC 2015 where he won bronze medal (starts around 5:00) He and Yuzuru went to the banquet together, the food there was mostly oily but both were hungry so they ate. After that, Daisuke had nausea and diarrhea and was also very sick during EX practice on the next day, and in the end he couldn't perform in Gala since the doctor diagnosed him as food poisoning. I'm so sorry for him but good that Yuzuru was ok, I wonder if he didn't have any oily food or it was just a luck.
