Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

I'm expecting Yuzu to compete in the GP if he's ready. On that same thought, any word on whether he's officially been given a bye to nationals again? I know the JSF gave him one for last last season after he had to miss nationals due to the flu and won worlds, but since he had to miss it again I was expecting the same but I can't remember when the announcement was made last time.

What? What? Nationals or preliminary Nationals as they have some rules regarding that. In my mind he'd love to get both crowns back- GPF and Nationals.

Sorry, maybe I worded it wrong but I meant a bye through sectionals/regional competitions in order to be seeded or qualified for Nationals. If I understand correctly for Japan, you have to have competed in Nationals the year before with a good enough placement to bypass the sectional and regional competitions. In 2016 he had the flu during Nationals and withdrew, but after the season was over the JSF had announced they were giving him a bye to compete at Nationals due to his winning results at Worlds in Helsinki. If he's to compete at Nationals this year he will need another bye, or he'd need to qualify by competing at sectionals/regionals, although I think there are clauses about international competitions overlapping with this which could also give you a bye as well but I'm not sure what the exact criteria were. This is partially why I expect him to do the Grand Prix (although I think he wants to regardless) and why I was wondering if the Federation will officially announce he'll be given a bye again since he won the Olympics.

JSF announced giving him a bye to the nationals on May 14 last year, Ito said they reached the unanimous decision. No word from them yet this year.

This article also has criteria for a bye, skaters (except for the medalists) have to compete at sectional/regional to be qualified for the nationals, but it is exempted if skaters participate in the international competitions such as the GP series in the same week (or within a week) as sectional/regional.

I expect him to do GP series since he seems to be recovering well and has decided two programs already. And about nationals, there is no way he will compete at regionals no matter what people say :laugh:

If I remember correctly, he said something like "I'd like to do as many competitions as possible." (If his health condition allows it of course).

Possible competitions this season:
A challenger event (ACI in Oakville is the most likely)
Japan Open (would be his last chance to compete with Javi)
2 GPs (probably SC and NHK) + Final in Vancouver
Nationals
4CC in Anaheim (USA)
Worlds (Saitama)
Team Trophy (Tokio)

Yuzu's big advantage: all events will take place in Canada or Japan except 4CC, so he doesn't have to travel that much and Vancouver would be a chance for him to experience Olympics 2010 retrospectively. (We all know, what the Games mean to him ;))

I doubt that he will do all nine events, but since he missed so many competitions last season, I'm pretty sure that he wants to give his fans as many opportunities as possible to watch him again :)
 
He's never done Japan Open before. And as Nathan and Javi are competing, I'm not sure he will compete. He has to travel to Japan just to compete a free program. I don't think he will do it because he would want more training time.

I think, the Japan Open have many advantages this season:

1. They're scheduled two weeks after Autumn Classic, so Yuzu would have some additional time for preparation, if he skips ACI and enters JO instead.

2. It would be the perfect test event for Worlds (both are held in Saitama) and for the new judging system, since many top skaters are competing (Nathan, Javi, Shoma maybe), so Yuzu can make some adjustments in time, if it's necessary.

3. And as mentioned before - it's his last chance to compete with/ against Javi. I can imagine that this is important to him.

There is no chance for Japan open, tbh there is more chance of him doing CS US classics or Mordavian Ornament than JO ever honestly.:laugh: Its about sponsors, agencies and groups inside. Yuzuru will never compete at JO.

I'm rather a text person than a photo person, but I'm really wondering if I should buy this. There is a stamp on the ad, "Yuzu kounin" means Yuzuru gave this book official approval, Ice Jewel stands out among others IMO.
