Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

It is a little disappointing to me honestly JOC's post didn't include Yuzuru, but it also didn't include Sara Takanashi who is a Japan's ace in women's ski jumping and a medal contender. It seems JOC has listed the athletes from "Symbol Athletes" of JOC and the problem was that they didn't say about it, especially for the international fans. (Yuzuru was a symbol athlete in the time of Sochi Olympics, but he isn't this time and Sara isn't either.)

This is the main problem, I just said this elsewhere. It shows that their social media theme has no understanding at all how social media work. It would have been very easy to insert a reference to their Symbol Athletes, and that would have been that. As it is, it seems disrespectful to their only gold medal winner from Sochi, when in fact it's just a misstep by those who handle their account.

Still, I find the response they got hilarious. Pick better next time JOC.

And Happy New Year everyone!

Happy New Year to you all.
Can you explain to us why JOC does not include Yuzuru in their list of Symbol Athletes for Peongchang Olympics in 2018, while he was on their list of Symbol Athletes for Sochi Olympics in 2014?
Do they (JOC) explain why they did that?
It is very incomprehensible for me, not being Japanese, to understand that action.
For me, Yuzuru is the only Japanese Olympic athlete that I care about the most.
Happy New Year for the JOC and JSF too.

Yes, I hope they have learnt a lesson and will be smarter next time. The responses they got were natural...

Happy New Year to you all.

I'm not sure if there is any "criteria" to be a Symbol Athlete, but it is said that there is disadvantage and some top athletes have turned down their offers in the past. JOC pays the athletes when they make contracts, but the athletes have to attend their events and they are not allowed to appear in CM of JOC's rival companies. Perhaps there is something more behind the scenes.

The Olympic schedule is out!

So the first practice for the Men, for the Team Event, is on Feb 1st and he should probably be doing the SP, so I expect he's bound to show up for one of these (if not that actual first one). We're almost there, I cannot believe it.

Thanks for bring this over. Gosh I don't really know if I'm reading this right, but is "TM S" team men short? So that means competition is on Feb 9th?

Wow, I love hearing about this! https://mobile.twitter.com/corinoricorino/status/947841058439757824
So apparently on TV last night, Komuro Tetsuya, a very well known musician/producer, named Yuzuru as the person he would like to produce the most! He praised Yuzuru as being like a raw diamond who shines by just standing there( hope my translation is ok)! This just goes to show how much his performance reaches out to everyone, even those in a completely different genre. Also how much potential people see in him. Hope he gets wind of this news, I'm sure he would be very happy.

That's right.
T is the add on for the Team event, so TM S is the short, 10am local time. The practice on that day is at ungodly 6 30am, I guess Yuzuru can zombie skate his way through that. The long is on the 12th but if Japan has kept the rules from the last Olympics, that is not going to be Yuzuru anyway, which gives him 6 full free days to the individual short.

I had never imagined Komuro watches figure skating! I'm curious what made him want to produce Yuzuru, like does he have favorite Yuzuru's program or did he see Yuzuru skating in the ice shows? (I wonder if he saw Yuzuru and Hiromi Go collaboration?) It was a good surprise, indeed!

Seeing the schedule of Olympics, I'm getting excited so I watched the videos of Sochi Olympics. Yuzuru arrived in Sochi 3 days before the team event, his first practice was on the practice rink and he didn't do any quad (3A was gorgeous though!), just checked his movements in FS run-through.

Do you guys think Japan will be able to skate in FS? Because only Top 5 after SP can skate in FS, and Japan was 4th after SP in Sochi having Yuzuru and Mao. In that sense, I also think Yuzuru is going to do SP if he is healthy since if the team doesn't advance to FS, there is no chance for him to compete before Men's single.

And as information, Daisuke.T didn't show up on the first two days (SP days) of team event, he was practicing on his own and arrived late in Sochi.

By the way, Yuzuru picked "pear juice" from refrigerator in the food court of athletes' village, the camera caught it and it was cute lol.

I'm going through the footage as well, looking forward to any news we can get...Olympics is getting so close!

Seems like SP is more likely for Yuzu (considering the resting gap in between team event and men’s event). Shoma might be able to rank high in SP as well, if JSF send Shoma, either one should have no problem to get a good rank for Japan in Men’s. (I am more concern about ladies...)

EDIT: I was just thinking... Yuzu haven’t skated SEIMEI clear this season. Would he want to do SEIMEI in team’s event, just to test it out one last time before men’s event? Not sure if that make much sense. :scratch2:

Having a chance to skate SEIMEI at the team event would be most ideal but unlikely. Japan will be dead last for pairs and close to last for dance, with ladies most likely somewhere in the middle.

You might be right. And even getting a 1st in the short is not a guarantee for the men which would be absolutely critical. And even getting that first is no guarantee that Japan advances because it depends on how the rest do. France will be more of a force than they were last time around and Italy has solid competitors with Kostner and the Ice Dance team and a better pair team than Japan. Can't count our chickens before they hatch I guess... It's like he has to opt to do both or be willing to miss the opportunity all together.

I looked up again, Yuzuru was 1st, Mao was 3rd, Takahashi/Kihara was 8th and the Reeds was also 8th, the team was 4th after SP. And pairs and dance did very good job there in my opinion. So it might be harder to advance to FS this time than Sochi considering of Men and Ladies are also deep fields currently. But I found interesting facts, Kevin Reynolds is 2nd and Machida was 3rd in FS, and in the ladies' FS, Valentina Marchei was 3rd, Akiko was 4th and Kaetlyn was 5th. As some people say, I guess the Olympics may be totally different from other compeitions and I wonder what is going to happen in Korea

Well considering they have the rule of highest SP skates the SP in the TE, highest FS the FS; and if both is held by the same skater, the FS goes to the second highest score holder, then I would think he'd have to actually say he wanted a switch and somehow I don't see him doing that. Even saying he wants both might be an issue because Shoma might want a chance to have a turn on the Oly ice for the free. So at least the short is a sure thing, especially considering what you mention ie the very questionable point of actually qualifying for the free part. It's something, if not ideal but none of this is unfortunately ideal.

If he decides to go back to H&L layout, which might be wise at this point, then it may not matter all that much anyway as he's got that one down pat.

Yeah the goal is to be top 5 after the short for everything. It's also clear that they typically use their stronger skaters for the short programs .

I also add that the skating's order of SP in the team event is based on the world ranking, so Yuzuru is going to skate last if he participates.

Is there actually a rule that says the highest SP skates the SP for the TE? I figured a nation could strategically choose who skates what to maximize the chance of winning a medal, but I didn't think there was a clear rule that requires the highest scorer to skate a segment. This is why I haven't ruled out yet that he may skip the team event altogether (but I don't think he will).
