Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Happy to know that Yuzuru has arrived safely in Korea and is focused on what he has to do to retain his Olympic title. Thanks to all those who posted updates.

It was actually while I was in Korea a couple of years ago as a homesick graduate student that I "discovered" Yuzuru when I saw on YouTube his Worlds 2012 LP. He was magical there, incandescently in command of the ice. I was an instant fan, unknowing yet what such fandom would entail. I can say that following Yuzuru (and also Tatsuki Machida) during the Olympic season, besides my Skype calls to my family, outings with my classmates, my Sunday masses at Myeongdong Cathedral, provided respite from the demanding academic grind. I vividly remember February 2014 as a particularly stressful time, refining my thesis per inputs of my adviser while monitoring Yuzuru in Sochi. I will always be grateful to my gentle and understanding roommate from Fiji who suffered with me through Yuzuru's less than perfect free program and then solemnly congratulated me when he eventually won. So Yuzuru and Korea have this happy association in my mind, and I hope and pray this will continue to be the case. :)

Some news from Twitter:

"yuzuru hanyu told the press waiting at the incheon airport that "i have the strongest feelings of wanting to win out of anyone" and "There were lots of competitions I had to withdraw from. This was frustrating. I am happy I was able to come here. I'll do my best to be in good form."

What a wonderful news to wake up to :yahoo:

He is here and like all of us after watching men team SP he thinks "I can eat them for desert ". Of course unlike me he is very polite and uses the correct words . But it's nice to feel that he knows how good he is. Now is the time for us to start praying, he will need it :ghug:

finally the moment we have been waiting for!! he looks to be in good mood and teasing us with uncertainity about his layout and condition :dbana::laugh: hopefully i will wake up to a great practice report of him :yahoo:

"There are a few choices. I need to look at what others are doing and make decisions strategically."

I love math mood

For some reason I had underestimated the frenzy he would bring, so when I saw the guards I was afraid something had happened, but looked liked it was just precaution? Good call! I have to give him props for looking so refreshed after the long flight! I myself can barely maintain a polite face not to mention a smile.

Press conference scheduled at 10:30 am after practice at main rink according to Twitter. Can we look for him in Team Japan's cheering squad Monday? I think he will want to be cheering for Keiji!

Yuzu is hungry. I can't wait.

P.S. Yuzu, babe, you need a haircut or you won't be able to see where you're jumping
