Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-2018

Peking University (Similar to Ivy league in Beijing), quoted Yuzu’s “Efforts can lie but will never be in vain” on their official Weibo

Thank you both. What reason did they give to not accept?

And how do you think people would react if Yuzuru were to decline?

Ichiro declined saying he was still competing as a baseball player and had to improve more, so if he retired, he would take it. (he declined twice.) I don't know about the other two (actually I don't know who they are, haha), but according to the wiki, one refused because he was not confident in carrying this honor, and another was the case the person had already passed away and his son refused since it was not meaningful.

The public will understand if Yuzuru declines, but there are always typical people who complain about everything he does. But we and he know they are fewer, so I just hope he will be happy and proud if he accepts. (People in Tohoku are already excited about this news, they say they want to say "thank you" to him :))

If he chooses to accept, the next big talking point will be the 'customized gift' which is part of the prize. Others have been awarded, artwork, jewelry, watches, brushes, etc. Usually given or made in consultation with the person being awarded. --What would they give to Yuzu? :agree:

Thank you for info

Judging on Yuzuru´s action... I guess something for his home rink... I think he has been talking a lot about ways for people to help Sendai´s economy...

I think I can say the criteria for People's honor award is vague, and basically the Prime Minister makes the decision so sometimes the public does not agree with him. Awardee are not only the athletes, they are from the field of art, entertainment, play, music and so on. There are some Olympic medalists who are not awarded this award like Kohei Uchimura, Tadahiro Nomura, Kosuke Kitajima, they have multiple medals but they don't have this prize. But on the other hand, there are also the athletes who had gotten this award with only one Olympic gold medal. So in my opinion, this prize must be not only about the number of the medal but also what they have done to the society. And I think Yuzuru has done enough for this. (and let's be real, I don't think the government can ignore Yuzuru's impact on the economy and diplomacy, which other athletes don't bring.)

Thank you for info

That would be wonderful :agree:

I think since criteria is vague it undoubtedly draws criticism, no matter who is being awarded. There will always be those who think their favourites/ people who inspire deserve recognition. I would love love it if the prize is Sendai/rink related, however judging by past presents I think it's more likely personal items.

Now I see the reasons why people have refused it, I feel it's possible he would be humble and say he felt like he has not done enough/too young or something to deserve it yet.

As for the photo shoot, I guess I am alone in liking it then??? I like it because it's a different side of him, and I like the idea of him having a chance to work with someone with such an individualistic and unique view of the world. It couldn't have been more embarrassing than those gum commercials, can it?? :laugh2:

I liked it too... :slink: or at least the principal picture

It's been a slow-ish day for Yuzu news, but there will be a documentary on TBS from 5pm, dissecting Yuzu's winning performances. The TV show is called Birthday.

Thanks for the info. So he doesn't have any other live appearances? Hopefully he already got his ankle checked and is resting nicely at home.

https://mov3.co/en/tbs/ --IT's half way through, but if anyone wants a stream...
It's finished now.
It was just a recap of how Yuzu won gold on the strength of his perfect GOE. With some cheesy music and dramatic pauses.

Since its a slow Sat afternoon, I would like know how many pts BV was the 4T + 1L +3S supposed to be ? How to count the combo when there's a 1L involved?

Of course, Yuzuru could have gone with his 2015 layout with two 3A combos and gotten close to the 216 he obtained at NHK 2015

He didn't lose BV with the 1Lo-3S combo because he attached it to his 3A, but he got only 70% of the second 4T's BV because of the REP. He also missed out on the 2T BV he planned with his 3A. All in all, maintaining the levels as were, he lost 4.83 BV points. Not much, for sure, but if he'd landed the 4T1Lo3S properly and done the 3A2T, even with the mistake in the 3Lz, he could have challenged for 1st in the FS.
