Yuzuru Hanyu: 2017-18 Season
Well the ideal would be not to go to the extremes. Even Yuzuru has being a defender of the technical part, Javier and Patrick had been in the group that have called for limitations on the tech components.
In one community I came from, we used to joke that balancing decisions were made by the staff getting drunk and throwing darts at a board. That’s ... quite possibly what ISU did, as reducing BV on quads doesn’t change anything as long as they retain the highest possible point values, -5 GOE for falls absolutely murders risk/reward, -3 for step outs is also pretty bad, backhalf bonus is being targeted through PCS or outright eliminated... there’s definitely a swing away from the last two cycles of “rotated quad with fall is better than not attempting one at all,” which I’m not entirely against, but ISU tends to “over-correct” rather than thoughtfully compose scoring systems.
It’s all speculative math, but since the Tweet with first details did mention Hanyu, I thought I’d point out that upon digging into the Tweets themselves, that was clarified to be very much a joke. As for how actual values will shake out... I have no idea, but just doing the math in my head, a fall on a 4Lz would be worth not even a full quarter point more than the BV of a 3Lz. Personally, I was in favor of increasing the factoring of PCS so it scaled appropriately with TES without just inflating the raw PCS marks, as eventually PCS maxes out.
I don’t want to get off topic, however, so maybe this is best in another thread? There’s definitely a balance between technical mastery and artistry, though I don’t think one has to come at the expense of the other. What ISU seems to be targeting is the risk-reward of “rotating but falling beats a clean program without quads,” and hard. But given how many points a fall can wipe out, anything less than a clean skate will have massive consequences... that’s what I meant by over-correction. -5 GOE + -1 deduction is 6 points wiped instantly... that’s going to be 50% or more of BV of almost all quads, assuming 10% BV reduction.
What I really hope is that we see more freedom in terms of program composition, which does sound possible, as I’d love to see what Yuzuru could do with more layout options beyond his optimized-under-current-rules one.
The GOE is not going to be applied the same way, though. Rumor is it will be based on a percentage of BV (as in each interval would be 10% of BV or somesuch). Plus they'll have to change how GOE is applied (bullet points) since the system is made for -3/+3 GOE currently.
Good point! Insomnia: not good when you need to remember to factor. Still, -5 GOE for a fall is going to murder BV and force more conservative choices... my sense is that TES is going to be very “swingy.” I would have preferred more stability on both sides, along with clear guidance, improved factoring for PCS, and upping the values of non-jump elements as well as loosening program structure so everything wasn’t min-maxed to death... you win some, you lose some.
(So if each GOE level is 10% of BV, it’s basically +10% BV per bullet/level, yes, up to 50% BV at +5? Which means the 3A, assuming BV stays, will be worth... 12.75 at +5. So still a quad, for Yuzu.)
