Honestly, I think Mcmorris will win it. He suffered a life-threatening injury 10 month ago and came back. To be nominated as a figure skater and Japanese already says a lot.

I think the chances are good that he or one of the Americans will win, and while I'm obviously biased in Yuzu's favour, I would not begrudge any one of the other five, they are all amazing achievements coming back from adversity.

With Yuzu, the injury in itself may not have been as severe as some of the others (though pretty damn bad! - I like that they acknowledge he only started practicing the jumps three weeks before competing) but it's the scale of the comeback.

To have medalled while barely healed against one of the deepest and fiercest and certainly the most technically advanced fields ever would have been a huge achievement in itself.

To have won the back to back Oly gold (the first after 66 years, only the third in history) and again against that deep, fierce, technically advanced fields while perfectly healthy and practiced and peaking in his season would have vaulted him into the greats of figure skating.

But to have done all that combined, and achieve two Olympic records (short and combined)... he didn't just come back, he came back and smashed it.

Ah, the Olympic China weibo had released their next stock of Yuzu warmup videos. All this focus on his rear and bottom is making me shy to watch lol. And the way he bowed so deeply at his coaches and the gym facilities before he goes out for the free skate is so typical Yuzu - always grateful and well mannered.

Same thought

I watched the ceremony occasionally in the past and I can't remember anyone in specific...
The Laureus is comparable with the Oscar/Academy Award for actors, so even a nomination is a huge honor. The gathering of so many sport celebreties in Monaco is nothing you want to miss, I guess

Yes ! The Laureus is like the Oscars in sports, particularly for highly commercialised ones like tennis, golf etc ( since the awards tends to prefer these athletes). Not to say Asians barely get nominated let alone get awarded. Past nominees included like Phelps and Federer etc, and this year he is up against Woods in his category..it is pretty amazing for just getting a nomination for someone from Japan! Especially when there has never been figure skating.

I am glad he is getting his deserved recognition by foreign outlets like ESPN, Laurels, Chinese media etc.
(and he achieved all these by himself without the help of any PR agents too)

:thank:

This award is not known in Japan in general and I think the reason is Japanese has not won so far, so if Yuzuru or Naomi wins this time, it will be acknowledged by people. I also read Japanese mega bank became one of the sponsors for this award last year, but I don't think it will affect the choice of Laureus members (which doesn't have Japanese).

It amazes me many nominees are showing their respect and appreciation for Laureus on twitter, it really looks like honorable award and I am very happy Yuzuru was chosen as a nominee :) I hope he will attend the ceremony (if he is available or he feels like going) and take a photo with Naomi

I think I will try the exercise on chair he was doing because my back, neck, shoulders hurt while I am working at the office  He is really used to be filmed, how can he be so calm and concentrate in that kind of situation, wow.

The first exercise is just Yoga 101 — cat-cow poses while seated. The next set is... uh, a sit version of a hip and core exercise. (“Uh” because I couldn’t give you a technical term but I recognise what he’s doing from dance.) When he stands, he continues that.

I had a bunch of stretch routines, from quick warmup to serious stretch, so for what it’s worth: if you’re looking for something to do when “cold,” the seated cat pose/cow pose reps are solid. If you can stand, the standard cross-body arm stretch always worked for me. Add neck rolls as needed. For the back, nothing feels as good as the king cobra pose or some knee grabs, but those require lying supine or on the back. Peacock pose is easy to do and just requires being able to stand (plus it feels great). My upper body warmup when cold was usually: neck rolls (x5 each side), cross-grab shoulder stretch (x3 each side), half sun salutation (x3-5).

I will try these at my workplace when I can, thank you for your advise :)

(I miss the murderface at competition, I do...)

I sometimes talk about Yuzuru's retirement with my co-workers and they always say kindly to me "You are going to be fine, he will do ice shows right?", but they don't know how much I am going to miss his murderface at the competitions  (he will have that face if he tries 4A at the shows though...)

On the other hand, even in shows he'll probably find ways and means to shred his loyal fans' nerves and turn their hair greyer.... that I probably wouldn't miss

Love Brian's face there on that second one, and Yuzu's innocent beam of delight.

Thanks for that first one! I'd seen most of it, but not the translation of what he said to Denis - does he mean he didn't sleep the night before? If so, no wonder his free was rough....

He could have been too excited by the fact he broke records in his short program at Sochi and couldn't sleep. But then I recalled reading somewhere that the skaters were being interviewed till really late so it probably affected their sleep pattern too. I don't think the Sochi splat fest for all men was purely coincidental. Well he clearly has become more experienced in PC how to deal with it all.

Yes I remember hearing that the press conference after the SP in Sochi went rather late and then there was morning practice the next day plus the free skate. Pyeongchang was also SP and FS back to back but schedule had changed so all figure skating competitions started in the morning rather than the evening. Things started much earlier but SP and press con ended by the afternoon in Pyeongchang.

Yeah I remember read that after sp, Yuzu realized the gold is really getting close to him so got nervous/excited and couldn't sleep at night. Also Hashimoto scolded him with some harsh words like 'you did well for the short, you'd better do well in the free,or else...' So all these, and the tight schedule, added up may contribute to the sleepless night.

What do you think the chances are of Yuzu winning the Laureus Comeback award, mostly because of the social media response from his fans?
Laureus has been posting "Who is your favorite pick?" kind of fish baiting posts repeatedly, most likely looking for more social media response. They seem to be very active on twitter, facebook and instagram, so I'm wondering how much the social media response from Hanyu fans will affect the overall decision of the academy.

What do you guys think?
