Yuzuru Hanyu: 2018-2019

On top of being heartbroken, I'm also very frustrated with a lot of commentators reactions (not only to his FS but french eurosport reacting to his SP as well), and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So I decided to rewatch and translate TAT and Yagudin as people here seem to like their support of Yuzu. Honestly, I don't agree with everything TAT says (in general) as she is usually very biased but I feel like Yuzu deserves to be someone's bias in this hard situation, especially if other commentators don't feel like being supportive at all.

Before Yagudin starts talking, Grishin (sports commentator) says that Yuzu skated with injury, so they were fully aware of the situation.

Yagudin: You know, his skate shows you once again that we are all human and, of course, we can all get tired sometimes, and I think that there should be skates like this one to show you that nothing in life goes perfectly well. In any case, even geniuses have days like this when they can't do everything. But what does it mean - "didn't do everything" - he did good 4S at the beginning and also 4T. The end didn't go well but he is so much further than anyone in the field that it will be enough for him to win. Who you are not gonna be jealous of is Alexander Majorov, who is starting his warm up, because it's very hard to avoid all the toys that are currently on the ice.
TAT: You know, I even forgot I have to do commentary. Because even with this skate I had a great pleasure seeing how he fought. Of course, after the fall and injury he had today, he, of course, was a bit not himself but he fought, and how he landed the jumps from all those positions, he added stuff, he fought, he didn't give up, he went to compete. And I always say that talent shows us a new perspective in all its entirety. With him we can see what is hidden behind the horizon, because we see our future. And a big thank you for that to him.
Yagudin: Many times we, Tatiana Anatolyevna, noted that it is very important to think when you skate. And before our eyes was the jump which he didn't land well but there should have been a combination with 3T. But he guessed that he could do euler and 3S instead. It means that every second when he is on the ice he is in control, his head works.
TAT: This is the most important for a singles skater that their head works, because head sends the impuls that legs need. It can't go without a head. I will go to him now. To say thank you. For a pleasure I had, for a lesson I had. And I will pass... Figure skating fans painted absolutely amazing picture and gave it to me so that I could pass it to him. I will give him the music I picked for him. I love this man that opens the future to us.
Yagudin: You know, after enormous amount of competitions Yuzuru Hanyu won, after two Olympic gold medals, the guy still has strength (to compete) and the most important he has the desire to continue down the skating path. We could, of course, say goodbye to him, he could stop competing because he is really the king of ice and he has a big amount of commercial offers, and the shows in which he skates, but he still chose competing.
Grishin: He is absolutely unique, of course.
TAT: He chose the hardest way because he can't live without it.

Aaaand she actually left to see him right after the scores came out despite there being two more skaters to go. Unprofessional? Yes, probably. But I'm so very thankful that she supported Yuzu so much.

I'm no professional translator so I apologize for any mistakes I may have made  If anyone wants to correct the translation, you are welcome.

I thought carrot refers to underrotations or downgrades [which he did get for the Euler (lol) and 3A]? Didn’t he just get an ! for the 3F? Or have I been misinformed about the carrots? 😅

I thought carrot means ! . ! Looks like a carrot to me. Next time I'll use the real term to avoid confusion.

So I decided to rewatch and translate TAT and Yagudin as people here seem to like their support of Yuzu.

Wow, I didnt know that she actually went to him when the competition was still going on... that is something.
I wonder if the music she picked was Rachmaninoff because I remember seeing some tweets about her saying she wants to see him do it.

Thank you so much for the translation, especially Yagudin’s comments. To me, the comments that holds the most meaning are those of skaters or athlete who has been there and experienced it all because they are probably the ones who understand the most.

I would really not be against Rachmaninoff at all

Sadly, it's not like all the commentators that were skaters themselves are like Ted Barton and always understaing. Granted I don't know what french commentotrs said after FS but after SP Nathalie Péchalat (she was an ice dancer) made some really inappropriate comments about Yuzuru's motives to have such programs this year (as I saw translation on twitter). So I will not trust judgment of a former skater that easily now. Commentator must know all that is happening on the ice but also they should be decent human beings, that's really all that I personally ask of commentators.

Thank you for your effort in translating this. Up until now I have been avoiding BESP like a plague because I don't really need another emotional stress or the urge to clobber someone's head, but I am happy to read this.

Thank you so much for the translation, Atlantis!

Carrots refer to "<" for underrotation. It's called a carat when upright like this: "^". "Carat" and "carrot" are pronounced the same.

NBC aired and Johnny and Tara make a note of possible injury and mention the fall. They were also very complimentary of his SP too.

That's why it was actually a very nice surprise to listen to the German commentator, Daniel Weiss, yesterday. He wasn't aware of the injury either, but to be fair - this was the first figure skating broadcast on German free TV since WC2018.

Here are some excerpts (the whole transcript would surpass the page limits, I guess  )

"If there's anyone, who is able to combine aesthetics and highest athletic difficulties to a masterpiece, it's Yuzuru Hanyu [...]

Quad Salchow! Phenomenal! [...] Look at the points!! Nearly 10 in base value and 3.74 in addition!
[...]
He has changed the layout entirely since practice in the morning! Another quad was initially planned here as well. The guys save their energy for the Final in Canada, that's clearly visible in Hanyu's program, too! [Gosh, that theory made me smile so hard ]
[...]
Ouch! That's rare to see: fall on the Axel. Usually he can do that while sleeping!
[...]
Beautiful position on that Camel spin! That can't be done much better as well! Very well centered the final spin from Hanyu.

The Olympic champion, Alexei Yagudin, applauds and it rains Winnie the Poohs! The stocks of all toy stores are depleted once again.
[...]
[This won't be a new world record], that much is clear. There were just too many mistakes, but of course this will be enough for a house-high victory here in Moscow, because nobody else at the moment is able to combine all aspects of this fascinating sport of elegance, aesthetics and jumping power so elegantly as the 23-year old from Japan.
[...]
And just look at this! You cannot fly in the air more perfectly in figure skating and his coach knows that. Appreciative applause for this terrific quadruple Salchow.

These little steps, edges, fluid, the spins, which were great... but still - and Brian Orser knows that and Winnie the Pooh in the background - it was close with some elements today.
[...] it was close with that Toeloop and then he reconsiders and he had to reconsider, because another combination was planned. There was only the triple Salchow left and he reacted incredibly quickly [...]

His ankle injury from last year is fully healed, he's topfit and of course many people wondered: Why does this guy continue? Two-time Olympic champion, two-time World champion, he has won everything?! - Well, this young guy is still hungry! He wants to move the limits of figure skating once again!
Today he felt them himself a little bit after four minutes and many skaters said in the last weeks about the rule changes: yes, this four minute free, thirty seconds less, is much harder for us, because it's more intense and currently the boys feel it visibly.

She suggested Notte Stellata, didn't she? I'm sure I read that...

How can I know it? Probably because he can see Yuzuru's greatness.. :luv17:

You could see how he was feeling every move and like Tarasova, willing Yuzu through it... and hugely impressed.

I haven't watched it myself, will probably need to wait till after we see him recovered and skating again.

CBC commentary for his Rostelecom Cup LP is at 8:28 (the password is men): https://vimeo.com/299710892 His SP wasn't broadcast on Canadian television.

I liked that the cast of CBC were aware of Yuzuru's injury and their comment was not harsh at all. They even showed the video captured his fall at the practice from their position, which didn't clearly show how he twisted his ankle, but enough to show he is injured by the fall.
Watched ISU live stream, so CBC was the first one I watched with commentary on.
Glad they are not like European broadcasts which I heard they were very critique about Yuzuru's skating.
Other than some errors on jump, his performance was still high up thereand his programs are still highlight of any competition. His point shows that, too. Not sure why the Europian TVs are so cold on him. Like it or not, he is still one of the best skater in 2018.

Lol. He is totally not aware of what's going on with Yuzuru, but nice to see someone genuinely giving him supportive comment.

People expect more of Yuzu than even Shoma, Nathan and Boyang let alone the rest. Even when he's clearly not at his best, even when they prefer the others and keep saying so, they still expect more of Yuzu. It's the price of being the GOAT.

On the other hand, the medal ceremony video shows how the crowd turned up in force and did everything possible to show him how loved and appreciated he is, all those signs and posters (including those goldpainted ones which I believe Chineses fans handed out at the doors!) and the cheering (listen to it on the famcam! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dfv8vgrp9Qs )

Morisi and especially Kazuki hovering and trying not to be too obvious about helping (I thought it would be Yuzu mothering him, not the other way round!) was sweet. I note how even on crutches, he levered himself round so he could watch the others get their medals and applaud, and as always how seriously he holds his medal and sings along to the anthem; honoring it never gets old for him.

I just watch the FS. I saw him at the ceremony with crutches and thought the worst, then while I was watching the FS, and he landed the first two quads, it was so smooth I thought he injured himself IN competition, not before! He is truly a fighter. Im so proud of him and wishing for his recovery.

I find it funny about commentators, if other skaters do worst than Yuzuru is just a bad day or they may have an injured they have yet to talk about, but when is Yuzuru is a prove that his time is over and he is not "that good" :rolleye:

I was just coming to mention the Big Sports award too! I hope this will lift him a bit now when he needs it....
