For a whole week, people have been celebrating anniversary of arriving at PC, anniversary of first OP, anniversary of Sochi win, anniversary of Chopin's comeback - all gearing up for the biggest anniversary - and that was what I expected to see when I wake up today, but instead Yuzu gives a video message and appear in the SNS of another skater and everyone's is like Yuzu came out of his cave! Yuzu looks so happy! Yuzu your collar is flipped! and the double gold anniversary is now on the side :laugh: That is ok, it means people love him more than his gold medals :)

Of all the people who praised him last year, I think two people's comments hit the nail the most - one being Arutyunyan's comments about the way he carries himself that intrigues people is something that cannot be taught such that that he is inimitable in life, and Javi's comments about Yuzu is still a mystery and he likes to keep it that way. It's funny how his rival and his rival's coach understands him the most (but not surprising since they probably spend a long time studying him:laugh:)

And sometimes, less is more :coffee: for example other people regularly post on social media, fans will easily take it for granted and click a like or post a comment. Yuzu gives a short message (whose contents are otherwise nothing special) and appears randomly for one second on someone's social media and twitter go bersek - and it gets spread more wider and garners more reaction than I believe it would had he appear more regularly. Not to say fans treat it as some special gift from the lord himself rather than a normal post, the whole attitude becomes very different.

In my opinion, Yuzu plays the "hunger" tactic very well - the more you deprive people of something, the more they value it.

I think his hair is styled that way, you can see the wax - usually when he doesn't care about his hair it appears as mushroom cup.

As for the one-side-up one-side-down collar, I noticed it appeared in both the Laureus video and Raya's video. Judging from the very different hair styles, these were filmed at different times. Hence, I don't think the collar is a coincidence, maybe it is some new fashion fad Yuzu is into (you actually see it in manga a lot this type of collar style :laugh:)

Agreed, though I don't think it's all that calculated - he is genuinely a private person, and that is unusual enough in this day and age to work up an air of mystery all on its own when most sports stars are happy to publicise every stray thought or action.

But he probably knows he can do it, and his fans and public like it and treasure what they get more (even in Japan, where they find the flimsiest of reasons to put him on the news or internet at every opportunity). In a way, it's a plus because given his star status, if he was one to splash out all over the media, it might become a surfeit and a drawback... as it is, it's all treats :)

Sorry I shouldn't have used the word 'tactic' to make it sound calculated. If anything I am marvelling at the fact its the opposite. For example, the whole Winnie the Pooh rain phenom (which really helped publicised him internationally) was clearly not calculated. He never asked fans to throw pooh, and had genuinely loved and carried pooh from childhood. Since Japan TV filmed him his whole life, you can see the Pooh hanged on his pencil case and bags at school long before he became famous, so it's not some random mascot he decided to whip out to garner attention.

Similarly, with the lack of social media appearance, I have no doubt he truly values his privacy given he mentioned its important for his mental well-being to keep himself isolated, but the result is the 'hungry' effect I mentioned. The private nature no doubt came from his family, who keeps out of the spotlight and does not intervene in his career, an even bigger rarity in the skating world given the amount of overbearing skating parents and siblings we know of. I am truly thankful for the family he has.

So things he naturally do or not do that are pretty unconventional end up working better for his image and popularity than abundant media appearance calculated by a PR agent.

I agree that he is a private person who has done amazing things.
We know he is always thankful to all his supporters. He must have expected some popularity but to become this big, I think he is overwhelmed just the same.
I mean how many people can arrive in the airport with 8 bodyguards and a hoard of media waiting just to know how your ankle is doing?

And all he wanted was to get two medals and the rest is cherry on top.
When I first encountered him, sure he is a good skater, but there is something so genuine about him that draw you in.
You feel that he is sincere, real and intelligent.

I don't doubt here was an element of calculation there, if more "I can do it my way and people will accept" :laugh: which of course he did (and which many in the public eye wouldn't actually dare.

It is amazing that, without the PR firm many of the others lean on, Yuzu manages to out PR everyone just by being the brilliant, beautiful, unique young man he is (biased? me?)

How many could make that entrance and make it look just so right and justified (okay and badass), and still seem so genuinely bemused and unaffected?
 
....And of course, today is the anniversary of the freeskate, and our Yuzuru achieving what hadn't been done for 66 years. Meeting the young pretenders head on and beating them all. And taking the 1000th gold medal of the Winter Olympics. And doing it (as we now know) on a still dodgy ankle and three weeks jumping practice.

Yuzuru Hanyu, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, making the sort of one-in-a-lifetime-let-alone-generation history...

Hahaha. Thing is in competitions, his collar is always nice and neat, per his perfectionist ways.
Though these days I notice Ghislain is the adjusting Yuzuru's collar at the kiss& cry. Hence both collar up. Orser I think adjusts both collar down.

About his family, I really admire their being so humble and keeping privacy. I can't believe we haven't seen his father's and sister's faces even now (I mean, publicly), because in most of the cases, once the athletes become famous in Japan, their families also get attention and appear on TV or newspapers. I think Yuzuru's case is very rare and it is good his family keeps their policy.
