Yuzuru Hanyu: 2019-2021

I am late but congratulation to Yuzuru on 5 quads program including perfect 4Lo and 4Lz!! Guys, I don't mean to treat him as an old man but he is 25 and still able to execute such a hard program, how amazing is that?

I tried to do some translation of Yuzuru's articles but my brain is not working anymore. But I just want to say that Yuzuru sounds very positive and he is excited to do more run-through of this FS layout (since he has not done that much) and looking forward to do the hard training. After SP, he decided to change the FS layout immediately since he thought he could not win, but also he wanted to achieve something in this competition. Trying 4A at the practice was part of that, he wanted to land it and was honored to try it in that venue. Personally he doesn't feel 40 points gap between Nathan's score is that big, if 4Lo and 4Lz can be more stable, he might think of doing them in SP. He wants to be stronger while having fun.

I was really impressed with Yuzu during the press conference. He has really matured into a well-balanced young man. He seemed so comfortable in his skin. Kudos to him for giving himself credit for all he has achieved during this competition.
And the greatest progress of all is not the quad lutz, but his much improved English!

I woke up at 6:30 am EST and cursed my internal clock. I wanted to be asleep and wake up to the news. But I decided to watch because I was just going to be thinking about it anyway. But I am glad I got to witness it. He was just soooo good and such a fighter! After he did the loop and then the lutz my heart was like a jackhammer in my chest and I wanted him to keep it together so badly! I love the sport and love so many skaters (the ISU and the federations however can eff themselves though, real talk), but there is nobody that makes me feel the way Yuzu does and win or lose, it's never going to happen again. I just know it in the fiber of my being. It's such a roller coaster being his fan, but I don't regret it. Whether it's happiness or sadness, he just makes you FEEL!! He's so worth stanning for and we don't deserve him.
 I feel the same.

So, I feel the scoring was actually somewhat fair. You can make the point that Nathan's GOEs are inflated, I agree. Some of his landings aren't that stable. However, Nathan fully deserves credit for skating his program cleanly, and to a neutral observer, the performance looks better that way.

Breakdown of why a 43 point margin:
SP lack of combo, about 15 points including PCS drop
FS popped 3As, about 16 points
4T-Eu-3F<, about 7 points because it detracts from 4T GOE as well as 3F BV
4T-2T pop, about 4 points for base value of 3T

Add them up, that's 42 points. Give Yuzuru about 4 more points on PCS for a cleaner skate and he beats Nathan by 3 points. So it's not as biased as you guys may think. I was heartbroken for Yuzuru too, but at least he stayed healthy and landed 5 quads. He can finally exorcise his demons from 2017!
He was going to do 3A-3A combo? O.o
or 3A-3T?

I would have paid to have seen that 3A3A... but I think I would have paid more to have the 4l and 4lz so cleanly, so it was a big win for me. Now he has Nats, then he has so much time to train this layout, or add the 4A, or whatever else he has to do, before World's (and who knows about 4CC). And, <knock on wood> he has no injuries at the moment that make him have to condense training into just weeks, so hopefully he'll be even stronger in March.

Yeah he yolo-ed hard for this competition lol. He executed all his planned content except for that 3A-3A SEQ
Which is the hardest combination ever performed? Is it Yuzu 4T-3A? I think it is!
Most guys just put 3t after a quad or a double jump!

While I wanted Yuzu to win dearly, I'm happy that
1) he is still healthy!!!! He gets to keep practicing and working towards his goals after GPF and go to Nationals instead of staying home!!!
2) Those first 2 quads in his FS were EVERYTHING. I had momentarily forgotten that his 2nd quad would be a lutz instead of a sal, so after he landed it I looked at the TES box and freaked out when I realized he had just done the Lutz like it's nothing.
3) I'm pleasantly surprised at his positive, focused mental outlook, both after the SP and the FS. Sounds like he's focusing on the long game, working towards his individual goals important to HIM, and aiming to peak at world's, rather than here. I'm ok with that.
4) Obviously his score was WAY lower than his potential...but for the FS it's a simple fix, all he needs to do is do more run-throughs with his brand new layout to manage stamina. That's not a problem of him getting older, but rather something he has always had to adjust to whenever he's upped his layout. He has the jumps. Despite silver, and despite the lower score than his other comps this season, a good competition nonetheless.

In terms of points = 4T+1Eu+3F. 16.83 BV in the bonus. Plus GOE, Yuzuru scored 20.90 for it at Skate Canada.

Thank you for the break down. I’m sure Yuzuru is fully aware if this hence commented that the difference wasn’t so big.

Points wise, I think it’s Samarin’s 4Lz-3T that earned 21.12

Yuzuru is such a fighter. I’m really proud of him and proud to be his fan. It might not be the ideal skate for him but it’s amazing to see him on his journey, conquering things one by one. This time it was the 5 quads and getting over the wall of past 4Lz experience.
I somehow feel like he is in better spirit than at Worlds. This somewhat puts me at ease and feel like the new year will be a reset, a fresh start. I believe that he will come back stronger.
I’m also very very happy to see him healthy. That was what I wished the most for him. No falls, no injuries, I definitely can live with that. And he can finally go to Nationals as he wished!
