Yuzuru Hanyu: 2019-2021

So - I know silver wasn’t what Yuzuru wanted here, but its still something to be proud of! He’s had so many amazing performances this season, and I know he’ll have more. One of the things I admire so much about him is his drive to continually challenge himself and to improve. I’m happy he’s healthy and really excited to see him at 4CC and Worlds!

This is going to be my last post tonight and my opinion might not be liked by some fans, but I am going to tell anyway. I am not Yuzuru so I don't know how he feels, but since this time Shoma became Japanese champion beating Yuzuru, I honestly hope Shoma will be carrying more pressure and responsibility from Japanese media and the country itself. I am not saying Shoma has not been under any pressure, he has been competing constantly as a Japanese representative and done so well, but I think Yuzuru's life has been too insane and not comparable to other skaters'.

Now Shoma is on Fuji TV alone and I am glad about that. He deserves it and Yuzuru is able to go back to hotel sooner. I know Yuzuru is double Olympic champion and the media will keep following him (and they won't forget about Hanyueconomy), but I hope Yuzuru can be a little bit more free with less burden in Japan in future.

(but I kind of know this selfish wish of mine is not likely to happen...)

You know you're the GOAT when GPF and Nationals silvers, which many other skaters could only dream of, isn't considered having as good a season as usual.

Good luck at 4CC and Worlds! :cheer:

I also had a thought that in a way this might be a ‘relieve’ for Yuzuru in terms of pressure. And it seems, at least to me, that he is happy Shoma did well. It’s definitely less pressure for Yuzuru going in to Worlds than if Shoma was still in a slump.

On another note, I’m glad I gambled and got the 4CC tickets when it came out.

I just booked 4CC ticket right after he was assigned to it. When I bought it, it kept showing my chosen seats were not available anymore. I guess it would soon be sold out haha.

I just checked. Yep, it is sold out. (I dearly hope no scammers got the tickets)

Yuzu has been assigned 4CC and Worlds

I was sure he would want to try 4CC before worlds. He has a lot on his plate in terms of strategy and wants, or needs, to have a test performance before worlds to decide his strategy and stick to it. Go Yuzu, you will win the worlds :agree:

I just watched the kiss and cry cam... his breathing scares me a little. It sounded like he was gasping for air at one point :(

I was so so scared for his health the last few days and am now so grateful he managed to do this injury-free. I'll take silver over injury any day, and as Yude said earlier, at least he can rest sooner now.

I was also gambled and booked ticket to 4CC when it was sold last week. Time to book for a flight and hotel, it seems.

He was breathing harder than usual after the SP as well. Physically he was struggling quite a bit during nationals. It seemed he could land jumps in isolation during practice but his stamina to do them with music and the rest of his choreography weren’t at their usual level. Hopefully he can take a good rest, it’s pretty unusual to hear him say up front that he’s tired before a competition so clearly there were some physical challenges here (am curious why he wore the monitor on his chest during the actual FS but I’m trying not to read too much into it). I’m thankful that he doesn’t appear to be injured, the fatigue will get better with rest and time and luckily I think he has that before 4CC and worlds and he can work on getting into peak form form again.

@kiches
What do you mean with monitor?

If you’ve seen practice photos before sometimes Yuzu wears some sort of monitor on his chest (not sure if it’s heart or respitory monitor, but you can see the outline of the box under his clothes) at times during practice. We don’t usually see him wear it during a competition skate but in photos like this:

You can see he was wearing it underneath the Origin costume during the free program. Yuzu doesn’t usually wear it while competing so it made me think he was trying to monitor his condition during the free as well, why, I’m not sure.
