Thoughts on women
  • Kaori looks to be in control of her destiny. If she can maintain control and complete her weakest elements my bet is on her. Maturity and charisma help her stand out.
  • Loena has a solid chance to be podium bound if she too maintains control and checks of her technical boxes as the judges will give her the marks for presentation and maturity. Her own competitive spirit and willingness to fight for her goals will control her destiny.
  • Three talented young women Monę, Chaeyeon and Hana will vye for a shot at the podium. Nina P may have an outside shot as well. Anastasia Gubanova may put herself in the mix as well, but may not have the speed or firepower to stay ahead of the others.
  • The Americans Amber and Isabeau need to find some consistency in order to challenge. Amber has the talent and the skills and just needs to believe in herself enough and concentrate to show us she has got this. Isabeau hopefully can regroup from her disastrously erratic season. The programs are beautiful and she has been working on her weaknesses. Perhaps not having too travel far will help her be less fatigued and stressed. She too needs to dig deep and trust herself and her hard work. The U.S. hopes for a decent finish for a home country worlds to showcase a growing crop of talent.
  • I look to see Maddie bounce back and rise to the occasion of skating at home.

Thoughts on dance in no order
  • There are three strong contenders for the title and clean execution will matter a lot.
  • Chock & Bates have the most audience/judge friendly RD and have executed it well barring illness. Their FD is very well thought out and meticulously choreographed with many intricate changes of position. The slower, mellow reflective Pink Floyd music and Dali-impressionist gloss makes for an interesting free dance. the scoring for the FD is the closest - a brand new lift may add some points.
  • Piper & Paul have a trademark, quirkier RD that has lost a few points here and there. A clean skate here will help them a lot. Pipers pants are also a constant delight as are the synchronized slides. Their free dance is a dramatic version of Wuthering Heights. If they get their levels, this could win the free dance and put them atop the podium.
  • Charlene & Marco have a RD that shows off their technique and speed against the Blades of Glory style music. Their free dance again shows off their technique and speed and echoes their earlier dramatic skates.
  • How close can Lilah & Lewis get to the podium? Their energetic RD if cleanly skated will net the great marks in presentation. Their Rocky free dance will be the decider in where they finish. If mistakes happen in the top trio they could take advantage. Solid technique and power will dictate their marks.
  • Laurence & Nikolaj have crowd friendly programs and seem to be gaining consistency for a home worlds. Will they continue on after this? Their future has clouds on the horizon and off ice distractions could have them place lower than expected.
  • Three talented teams are on the rise Alison/Saulius rocked their way to a great Europeans, Lopareva/Brissaud have been steadily impressing with solid skating, and the Finns Julia & Matthias have beautiful artistry.
  • Eagerly awaited is the return from injury for the exciting and talented Lajoie/Lagha and rising Americans Carreira/Ponomarenko, she born in Canada and Bratti/Somerville who make their debut.
  • A close field of talented skaters, some of whom will miss the cut sadly.

To those with boots on the ground - have the most fun, take care and enjoy!!
Well, my 30th bday adventure, delayed by 4 years, is all go (unless farmers' protests on Wednesday prevents me to be on time at the airport). I'm full of doubts, sprinkle of fear, dash of hope and with colorful circus packed (that I'm not even sure I'll be able to get into the arena...).

Let's hope I can get there and...enjoy too.
Sneak peek for those invested. Let me know if you want numbers or destination. Oh, the plan is to be there Thu-Sat, so if you would like to meet, let me know (will try my best to be on good behaviour lol)

Hey,

I have a question please.

If I'm going on Thursday to the Men's Short Program (which is almost 6 hours long!) is it better to miss the beginning, or leave early at the end?

I know usually it's better to see the end because that's when the best skaters skate, but I heard at the Worlds it's organized by groups, and then by the rankings in each group, so the best skaters are evenly distributed in the groups.

Is there an advantage for either option, if I can't stay for it all?

Please let me know, thanks
Hiya - I like the earlier groups - it's an opportunity to see up-and-coming skaters and/or skaters who you might not see at other major events (like the Grand Prixs). For example, Jari Kessler and Davide Lewton Brain - both expressive, interesting skaters who will likely be in the earlier groups of Men.

The 6 hours whizzes by - hopefully, you'll be able to see everyone!

None of the too harsh ones...

USA got screwed in dance... Interesting TP and no judge in the field...

Maybe he has worked before and I missed it, but interesting to see Peter Cain as a TS (and identified as Australian, which he is, although living abroad for 25 plus years ;) ).

I wonder if he became eligible as soon as Ashley and Timothy retired?

He and his sister Elizabeth are still listed as Australian in the ISU official lists. They are not the only ones who are still under their country of origin for ISU roles even if they moved in the USA decades ago. I can think of Gilberto Viadana, Konstantin Kostin, Yevgeny Martynov, Galit Chait, Andrzej Dostatni. Also there are some former pair and dancer skaters who switched country in their competitive career and then became officials for their new country even if still based on their previous one (Kristen Fraser still being for Azerbajian).

Cain is not the only parent-offspring technical specialist. Currently and in the last few seasons, there were also Yevgeny Martynov who is the father of Daniel Martynov; Svetlana Lyapina who was the mother of Jonathan Guerreiro,
They can't judge their own children obviously...it becomes a bit tricky when they can judge athletes who are potential competitors of their own children. They need to serve in 2 competitions in previous 24 months to keep their ISU qualification...but it can be somehow done. For instance, Marytnov is calling only in Senior competitions since his son started to compete in Junior. I guess when he moves to Senior, he can judge only Junior events.
