OMG, Vanessa Riley (The Legend of FS judge) is still working I see.  Albeit, as a referee only.

I love that video.

and I did agree with her comments on Fadeev's costume, and Callaway about U&Z costumes t: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8ECupWBess

Riley calling Bonaly's costume during figures "court jester's outfit".
I have a feeling, as a referee, she dings all the skaters that have "terrible outfits" according to her taste. :slink: for sure those with weird outfits will get more edge calls.

She should dings them. There are some horrible outfits out there. :slink:
Is she doing only the referee or also serving as a judge? I know she was a judge at Euros few years ago.

I don't know. I have to check the list of judges at all the big competitions recently.

Hope an OT comment is allowed. It occurred to me how things will go when an Ukrainian and Russian judges are sitting together. Are there historical precedents when countries are at war not to have their members on the same panels?

FINALLY! HE should of been banned for life and shamed and publically disgraced because he really put a dent in the credibility of the sport.

He was suspended for a year! Then he served his suspension and came back. There is no ban for life rule.

1. Ukraine and Russia are not at war.
2. I don't think SRB judges refused to be on the same panel with whatever country was in coalition that bombed Serbia in 1999.
3. The Ukraine itself is a deeply divided country. Not every Ukrainian regards Russia as enemy despite what's being presented by mass media (especially Ukrainian) on the subject of SEU events. Whatever the case I hope Ukrainian judges are civilized enough to not let their political views affect their professional duties.

Balkov judged for the Soviet Union before its breakup. After that, his 'label' was UKR but in practice, his loyalties still were for Russia.

Every year, at the start of the season, each federation decides which of its judges will represent them on judging panels. Perhaps Ukraine as a country prefers to send out judges that have a more unbiased view.

What proof do you have that the judges ukraine uses now will be as anti russian as you want them to be?

The issue is being open-minded and judging only on the merit of the skating. Balkov certainly wasn't doing that. I don't know how open-minded the other Ukrainian judges are, but they can't be worse than he was.

I do think Balkov should not judge due to his record. But it's not like him alone could rig the whole competition. Now he's gone so let it be.

But how do you know? What if a Ukrianian judge can be assumed to have have given a Russian all 9's in pcs?

Or to the FS school/style of that area.
I'm not referring specifically to Balkov in this case but people do seem to forget it, or ignore the fact that these things do count.
A Canadian judge most likely would choose an american (among the top skaters), if not direct competitor of his own country, and viceversa. Nothing unusual, or bad about it.
