The Japan Skating Federation revealed Tuesday it will bid to host the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships on behalf of the city of Saitama, just north of Tokyo.

The JSF approved a plan to host the event at Saitama Super Arena between March 20 and 26, 2023, at its board meeting on Wednesday and plans to announce its candidacy soon.

I kind of assumed Montreal would be bidding as well, considering, but I guess we'll see.

I think the word is that Skate Canada plans to bid for an upcoming Worlds, but no decision was made as to which.

Is there something about Saitama that makes it the JSF's default choice for these? This would be three straight Japanese Worlds there.

Cost performance? Probably the cheapest arena you can get with the best proximity to Tokyo, the largest base of skating fans.

Would be really surprised if any country outbid Japan.

When all the dust settles from Covid, it'll be the reliable feds and facilities that will get the first bids. We might very well see revisits to cities like Helsinki, Boston, and Barcelona in the coming years.

I'm guessing it's the capacity:
Saitama super arena cap.: 36,500 (the number is the max. capacity. I was there for WC2014, it's a HUGE arena)
Yoyogi National Gymnasium: 13,291
Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium: 10,000 (WC 2007)

Then the additional consideration is the traffic. Being in the suburban area to Tokyo, it's quite convenient to get to the arena from Tokyo.

I had assumed Montreal would be assigned the next open Worlds slot by default.

Well after cancellation of 2020 Worlds, the ISU invited applications to host 2023 Worlds (and to host many other ISU championships -- for figure skating, synchro, speed skating, short track).

The application deadline was Aug 31, 2020.

FWIW, Hersh had reported in Jan 2020 that USFS would bid for 2024 Worlds.

No telling whether the pandemic has had any effect on the USFS plan.

Great that Canada is bidding on Junior Worlds soon. It's been so long since that event has happened in North America.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if they've announced where 2021-22 Grand Prix Final will be held?

I was hoping for that as well.... ;(

...as was I. It should be a given that Canada is offered 2023 Worlds for Montreal or any other suitable Canadian city after needing to cancel this year. I'm honestly stunned that the ISU would even consider any other city/country besides Canada. (It is especially distressing that Saitama would bid for this after hosting just last year - give Canada their chance!)

Saitama Super Arena is the biggest venue in and around Tokyo. It takes only 30 minutes from central Tokyo by train. Saitama is like New Jersey and living in Saitama while working in Tokyo has its advantages. The Japan Open will be held at the arena in October without non-Japanese skaters, while it is uncertain about how many spectators are allowed in (5,000-20,000). Yoyogi National Gymnasium is relatively small but most national championships are held at the venue in other sports.

Osaka.

I do remember someone complaining about the GPF right before Olympics are always in Japan. And I had to look it up... and it was indeed the case since the 05-06 season lol.
