Report:

Yuma Kagiyama made a surprise appearance.

https://hochi.news/articles/20230521-OHT1T51272.html?page=1

Excerpt (machine translation):

When Kagiyama appeared as a surprise guest, he was greeted with the biggest cheer of the day. He mesmerised the audience with two programs, including an encore, and said: "I was very nervous, but I was able to concentrate on my performance. The audience welcomed me warmly and it was a good memory."

In the 2022-23 season, he only competed at the All-Japan Championships due to an injury to his left foot. Despite this, he showed his light movement on the day and said: 'It's not perfect yet, but I can practise with no problems at all. I'm starting to get a good feel for it." He stressed his recovery.

[...]

He said he was undecided about his future competitions, but expressed his enthusiasm for the coming season: "I want to increase my unique weapons and aim for first place at the All-Japan and World Championships".

This article gives a brief summary of the event with mention of the Rinkai Sports Center's history, which was on the verge of closure in 2012, but eventually saved with the help of fundraisers/charity events – many of which were organized by the skaters, who used to train there at the time (one of the leading initiators was Daisuke):

https://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/202305210001718.html?mode=all

Excerpt (machine translation):

Skaters of all ages, from children to adults, took part in the event. They each performed on the ice.

Takahashi said: “It's been a while since I performed at an event (at the centre), but I thought the number of skaters, including ice hockey players, has increased a lot. I think it's great that there is so much energy.”

Muramoto added: "I felt it was a great time for everyone, from small children to adults, to be able to participate and skate together in an event like this."

The centre was used by Takahashi when he was a student at Kansai University, and was on the verge of closure in 2012 when it was pointed out that it needed to be earthquake-proofed, but Takahashi and others helped to keep it open with their donations.

Looking back to about 10 years ago, when the school was in danger of closing, Takahashi said: “It would have been really difficult if we had lost it once. I think we were on the edge, but the fact that we were able to continue was a very big thing.”

In addition, he commented on the current rink situation in Japan: "There are very few rinks. I think that if there was one rink in each prefecture, the range of skaters would expand." "This is something that everyone involved in skating needs to think about, and without the cooperation of the local community and many other people, it would be difficult to maintain. I hope we can all think about this together".

In addition to the centre's trainee alumni Keiji Tanaka (28) and Tatsuki Machida (33), Kanako Murakami (28) and Yuma Kagiyama (20) also made an appearance at the event. Kazuki Tomono (25), who is in Canada, was unable to appear, but celebrated the 50th anniversary with a recording.

The centre was built in 1972. It celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and decided to hold the event a year late in light of the situation with the spread of the new coronavirus.

The event was opened and closed with speeches by Yoshinori Onishi, Tatsuki Machida’s former coach.

The first half of the show featured performances by the coaches and current students of the local club(s), including not only figure skating programs, but also a short ice hockey show match.

Afterwards the guest skaters performed the following programs:

Keiji: “Memories” + “Sherlock Holmes” encore
Kanako: “Scars to your beautiful / Me too”
Yuma: His new program “Werther” + “Rain, in Your Black Eyes” encore
Kana & Daisuke: “Love goes” + “Soran bushi” encore

The performances were followed by a talk corner / Q&A with Tatsuki.

The event ended with a short surprise retirement ceremony for Kana and Daisuke. They were presented with flower bouquets by Kanako and Keiji.

The 3rd (and last) show of Prince Ice World in Saga City at the new multi-purpose SAGA Arena has just ended. According to ensemble leader Hirokazu Kobayashi, a total of 16,500 tickets have been sold, meaning that all 3 shows were close to sold out – a good sign for the Japanese ice show market after there had been a decline in audience numbers since the start of the pandemic. I think visiting a place like Kyushu, where ice shows aren’t usually held, had a positive impact on attendance.

The official PIW twitter account thanking the audience for the support:

Prince Ice World is Japan’s oldest ice show, founded by Prince Hotels, Inc. in 1978. The show has a different theme each year with specially crafted sets and is known for its elaborately produced group numbers performed by the Prince Ice World company. (Kumiko, Nobuo and Yuka Sato, Midori Ito, Minoru Sano and Masakazu Kagiyama are among the past company members.) Merchandise of the current ensemble skaters is available at the shows.

In some years the predominantly Japanese cast is complemented by foreign skaters. The performances in Saga are the first time Javier Fernandez has appeared at PIW.

This year the show was Broadway-themed with musical director, Koumei Sugano, at its helm and features live performances from musical actors such as Mario Tashiro.

Report from Yokohama about this year’s production:

https://worldfigureskating-web.jp/news/4030/

Another unique feature is the “meeting time”, giving the audience the opportunity to interact with the cast at the end of each show. Before the pandemic, it was customary to give gifts to the cast, which has since been discontinued. However, it is still possible to ask the skaters to pose for pictures.

A couple of fan-taken pictures after yesterday’s performances:

I agree. From fan reports it seems that a lot of the audience were local crowd. I think PIW and the Arena management were smart to capitalize on the momentum of the new arena opening- PIW is a great ice show experience with multiple group numbers and familiar material (Broadway) to appeal to the general public, while the SAGA Arena was newly opened last year and had a shopping complex beside it so it drew crowd to that complex as well. And the arena is really nice apparently, I saw fans tweeting about how they hope it can hold NHK or Nationals there 😆

The Ice Osaka: July 29, 30
There seems it will have on-the-floor dance contest. Currently listed Unit A Daisuke Takahashi+Kevin Aymoz, and Unit B Ilia Malinin+Junhwan Cha. Don't know if more units will be added yet.
article in Japanese: https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/85200f260eb5c767084bd474a45dd14a513f1e01

Dai+Kevin will be fabulous, out of this world, no doubt!:dbana:

Here’s the notification on the “The Ice” website for Europeans like me, who can’t access Yahoo Japan:

https://fs-theice.com/notification/dance-unit-2023/

@deedee: Does the article say that the teams will compete against each other, like the popular on-ice dance battles in previous years?

Dai’s natural dance ability and floor dance experience will surely come in handy. He also said in the retirement press conference on 2 May that he would like to explore more floor dance. So there is a fun opportunity here. :)

Jun is a good dancer with some ballet and other floor dance experience too. I liked his stage collaboration with Sung-hoon Park: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mh1JlcDJic

I wonder, if the teams will come up with their own choreography. I would love to see Dai and Kevin incorporate a lift (Kevin is shorter than Kana after all). In any case, I’m sure both teams and the audience are going to have a blast. :dance3:

By the way, fans have been invited to think of suitable names for the two "units”. So far suggestions are ranging from A: Daimoz and B: Junmari to A: Strong Miso and B: Light Soy Sauce.

I need to see this performance. :)
Agreed. Kevin is one of the very few skaters among current active skaters for me who has creativity and originality in his/her competitive programs so that makes me look forward to and wonder if what s/he will come up with next? every season. :)

The comparison 'Miso vs Soy sauce' is just GREAT. I like it! 🤣

Just a note, GIFT is set to be released on Disney+ tomorrow through almost all of its worldwide partners. That means the USA, Mexico and Latin America, the UK and the rest of Europe, Turkey, India and Pakistan, Latin America and South-East Asia. Japan and South Korea have been streaming since 30 June (and doing really well, no surprise.) Canada and Germany haven't officially confirmed but Disney's head office have indicated all countries will stream it soon.

It includes an interview and BTS footage and is fully dubbed in every language.

GIFT has just gone live (twitter is fizzing wildly :jump::jump::jump:) so I can confirm that Germany and Canada and every country that has Disney+ is now streaming GIFT.

This could also be a chance for young people who have never even thought about figure skating to see the ad/link, get curious and maybe, just maybe, get interested... in the sport as well as Yuzuru?

@synesthesia: thank you so much for reporting back on the successful buying of the ticket!! I wasn't able to buy the ticket earlier, and was kind of feeling disappointed about that. Then I realized when I registered for PIA live stream account, I picked the wrong country (have to choose 'Japan' or you'll get blocked out!). Now I'm able to get the ticket!! Looking forward to the Finale of Beyond in a couple of hours!!! 🌹 :hap10:

Just a quick update that the PIA stream works without vpn! The video quality is pretty decent. Oh, and I made a mistake above: ticket sales actually end just about two hours before the archiving period ends. So anyone undecided still has until then to purchase a ticket. It's worth it! I haven't watched the entire show yet, but what I've seen so far is !
