The question was why are "we' just discussing pairs instead of ladies or mens or whatever.
No, the question was, "Why are you singling out only U.S. skaters to suggest they should feel bad about winning medals in the absence of the Chinese and the Russians?" You didn't mention the Japanese, Georgian, or Canadian pairs teams. I then also pointed out apropos comparisons in the singles events. Even in singles threads, I haven't seen anyone suggesting that Shoma, Yuma, Wakaba, or Kaori, et al, should feel bad about winning medals in the absence the usual top-scoring competitors in those divisions.

In any case, if you didn't intend any dissing, okay, fine. Then, there's no need for further defensive pushback. Meanwhile, the points made by the rest of the posters here in response to your initial comments (which you posed as a query) are well-expressed and well-founded. Us fans can always debate and shoot the breeze. The skaters train hard to make their statements on the ice, "in the arena."

"It is not the critic who counts... The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena, whose faces are marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strive valiantly; who err, who come short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who do actually strive to do the deeds; who know great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best know in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if they fail, at least they fail while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." -- Teddy Roosevelt
