Yulia Lipnitskaya

Just came home from college and saw Yulias SP…wow! I love her outfit, its vintage-like look really goes with the overall kite idea, and her hair really plays up to the whole “young girl” look. I never thought it would be possible for her spins to get even better, but clearly I was wrong…lol. All you could hear from the crowd was “ohhh.”

According to the narrative I have read, she is a country girl who has just arrived at the city. She finds the city to be a threat to her identity and aspirations--in other words, she remains a country girl at heart. With this in mind, the costume is a good choice. Anything chic would contradict the image she intends to project. The pattern is also a good choice. In addition to simple style that we'd expect from her character, the horizontal strips reinforce the visual momentum of spins and jumps, which are primarily horizontal movements. Vertical stripes or patterns would break up smoothness, like driving past a picket fence. Red on white is a good choice. She doesn't get lost in the background as she might with a weaker color, and it is youthful which fits her country girl image. As always, she has come up with a solution that enhances her program in several ways.

It would be nice if the management would paint the side boards a neutral white, instead of squeezing the last dollar out of the rink with advertising. The lettering and imagery of the advertisements are very distracting. They absorb movement when paint color matches costume color, and conflict with movement when colors are different. Yulia is moving so fast that it is sometimes like looking out a train window at railroad cars on the next track. I am disgusted that they would sacrifice quality of performance if the price is right. Corporations first, skaters second. They need to put team Yulia in charge of this without delay.

I like how her skating has developed over the off-season. It looks much matured to last year! Jumps seem better too. Is she doing a 3T-3T because she is afraid of the penalty? I think it is a good idea though. She is less likely to get penalized for the wrong edge if she does it once in the short program at a more important, competitive event.

Do you all know if she ever practices a 3F-3T?

I've never seen footage of it but Evgenia and Serafima practice them so I would be surprised if she hasn't explored the option herself. They have jump offs so I bet she tries it in practices but I have no evidence...simply a hunch.

Looking at some screenshots from some Japanese, it seems like they may have had different cameras or more control over which camera angles are used... regardless, I hope someone uploads the japanese version of the SP.

I love Julia's dress. That's so refreshing to see. Girls normally go for laces, sequins and everything glittery. Then here comes Julia looking oh-so summer-y and bright. Awesome! I hope she does well this season! (Kinda excited to see Hanyu and Julia together in the gala!)

Welcome to GS Ayeshoo!! Haven't seen you posting here before  Always room for more!

Congrats, Yulia. You're skate was wonderful, saved the whole evening for me because the only other performances I could stand to watch were Gabrielle Daleman's and to a lesser extent Elizaveta's. You brought the house down.

Edit: Did anyone else notice Yulia was still wearing gloves? I only noticed when I was watching for the nth time during the slow motion that's right up to her face when she blew a kiss to the crowd.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I normally just read before. But I'm just so excited with the new season. I think it's a great start for the girls. I love the senior skaters before like Mao, Yuna, Caro etc; but the podium will be a lot different this season so I'm really looking forward to that. ;)

Great SP today...and I hope tomorrow she'll have no problems claiming that gold. Romeo and Juliet, however overdone, is the ideal backdrop for a heart wrenching (in the best way possible) Yulia performance! I am always puzzled by people who say Yulia has absolutely no connection to her music and is like a robot. Before I saw her Sochi performances, I was actually not aware that figure skating was that musical of a sport :slink: I mean she is rough for sure. Definitely rough. If that's what they mean then yeah, I see it. She's only 16 after all, and even prodigies have room to grow. She's always had natural musicality IMO--it's in the way she moves her hands, the lines she goes for, her thoughtful (often misattributed as dead) facial expressions. It's just that she's only now starting to discover that in herself as to utilize it properly. I mean if this can become this in 8 years, then wow...I can only shudder at the amazing things Yulia is going on to with her natural talents. Straight into the books of legend. Blablabla...I digress. Anyway, Yulia is a deeply philosophical child. She'll figure it all out for sure.

Thanks Unite...love the Video's!! That Ina Bauer!

FWIW Yulia has a really nice Ina Bauer that well see in a few hours. Good luck Yulia...I'll probably sleep through this one :slink:

A Yulia fan channel has uploaded the Japanese broadcast... the camera angles for the actual skate are the same but the japanese had their own camera for the kiss and cry and they used different angles for the replay. So you can see things a few things differently if you skip the skate.

BTW, I seem to notice that some of the videos of this performance make Yulia seem slow.... and the audio is lower for these... the icenetwork video is like this and maybe the british eurosport one too IIRC... but the Russian video has higher audio and makes Yulia seem intense and with the music more. The Japanese broadcast seems in the middle to me. I have no idea why there is this difference in perception to me.

I woke up in time for the disaster. :disapp:

Well, maybe it will do her some good. Come on Yulia, show me the tiger in you at TEB live.

Oh well... the only thing I want to say right now is that I want to hug Yulia so tightly

Let's don't make drama, the problem this season was real and she showed she's not the robot some people like to say about her

Well that was rough.... I hope this sparks something inside of her and she can rebound. I'm nervous though if she'll skate at TEB. Can she save this program in time for Russian nationals and hopefully beyond. All I know is this makes me a very sad panda.

Why didnt they fix that Salchow over the summer? She has so much momentum carrying over from last year. They should have worked extra hard instead of taking such casual approach. The whole FS debacle and lack there of :bang: When I saw Serafima and Evgenia's programs looking so strong it actually made me upset that Yulia wasn't given the same attention. The thing is...I'm not surprised by this but I kept reassuring myself that there is no way they would send her there so unprepared. At least her SP is good. I actually like it better than last years.

The worst part wasn't even the program...just seeing her look so frightened by...whatever happened out there tonight. So sad.

There can be no doubt. She is definitely human.
